What is the single item that you would never go on a fishing trip without?
(I don't mean your boat, fishing license and the obvious things)
I am not really sure what mine is but I will do some thinking and post it later.
Needle nose pliers and good set of cutters. Not sure if that is obvious or not, but ever since being hooked in the fingers with trebles and 3-4 lbs hanging off my hand for dear life I will never again fish without them. Since I incorporated that rule, I have never had a hook incident again.
Smart Phone-Honestly
GPS, contact with 911 or assistance. I wouldn't head out without it. I keep mine in one of the Berkley waterproof containers.
at least a second rod... fishing one style gets old quick.
Lucky hat
Well being a 20 year old, I was raised with technology/smartphones/ect, so im going to leave those off. Honestly I wouldnt go without my cigarettes.
Needle Nose Pliers.
MegaStrike.
Map.
sunscreen...being lobster red is painful.
SCALE
Needle nose pliers and some chartreuse JJ's.
My hat. Sunburned scalp is not fun.
Tom
My sunglasses. No sunglasses, no trip.
Filet Knife...
Needle nose pliers for me.. Sunglasses are also a necessity.

sun glasses
Costas
scale
camera/phone (someone has to show 00mod what dinks look like)
JJ's magic
Sunglasses
Bugspray
Smartphone
SWIMBAITS
Doughnuts
Hat, sunglasses and bug spray.

It's been a tradition of mine and my sons for quite some time. Before every trip to the Chain we stop off at Thornton's in Volo and he buys chocolate longjons for breakfast.
Truck Keys.

Sunglasses aren't a big deal for me. I've got rugged retinas!
Bugspray... Meh... I never seem to have a problem with bugs.
Hat? I have the thickest most man-pretty hair - No sun penetrates through it, plus I'm italian and have naturally sun-resistant "olive" skin, so there's no need for me to have a hat to cover my neck or face either.
I could go without my smartphone, although I always bring it for pictures and the all-important weather radar.
Never used JJ's magic.
Hmmmmmmmmm........ I'd say... I really honestly can't think of anything that I would HAVE to have with me. I just need my tackle, my rod, and a fully charged battery to beat those docks and pads with. I can live without most of the stuff mentioned here. If I see one that I really agree with I'll come back and mention it, but for now, I just need the essential fishing gear.
Well if you don't have a scale & you catch a new pb it is not a true pb Then we have to live through another post of how much do you think this weighs?
Snacks, no matter how much I love to fish, a trip is ruined for me when i get too hungry. Snacks are always in my bag, whether it be power bars, a bag of chip, something. Water is right there with it. To me my hat, knife, and things like that are give ins. A hungry Christian is not a happy or successful fisherman.

There's always a scale in my boat. I would consider that part of the tackle.

HERE IT IS. This is the one thing that I could not go out for more than a couple hours without. After the 2 hour mark or maybe even sooner I'm scrounging into my "Pic-a-nic-a-bass-kit" for a nutty bar, pop tart, bottle of water, or fruit snacks. There's my answer... Snacks!
P.S. My "picnic basket" is a tupperware container about 16 inches long, 8 inches wide, and 4 inches deep, completely waterproof and has buoys on the side so if it falls in I can retrieve my snacks, keys, and cell phone safely. In-genius fisherman's tool that none of us should be without. It was only like 10 bucks.

So a guy, who is fishing alone, catches a PB and realizes that he forgot his scale -
When he screams - does it make a sound ?

Take 2 scales......just in case!
Jeff
Nail clippers, needle nose pliers, lip grip, scale
My phone, incase I need to hit up Bass Resource on the spot and get some tips, and bottled water is also a must.
I have most of the things i find to be a necessity when fishin with me at all times any way. Phone, wallet, knife, needle nose and copenhagen.
Toilet paper
Ruger SP-101.

TP for sure.
Snake charmer in unfamiliar territory.
Tradition is good. What's the place called in Volo. Haven't been there in years. I love Boston Creme doughnutsOn 7/27/2013 at 8:37 AM, slonezp said:It's been a tradition of mine and my sons for quite some time. A can a dip, sunglasses, and oh yeah TP... pliers are a must buy I think if your a fishermen that's a no brainer.. also some
Copenhagen.
Alas I'm on here this morning and It's raining like crazy, thunder and lightning, and the outlook is poor for the rest of the day.
I thought of another as I was typing. NEVER forget rain gear when you go for a quick trip in between storms.
Pliers, sunglasses, sunscreen, phone.
slider heads !!! they are killer in the deep clear reservoirs I fish.
Stake out pole...best thing ever for a kayak.
Eighth of a sheet of 600 grit sandpaper to keep my hook points sticky.
Another vote for sunglasses. Bright sun for too long equals a guaranteed headache for me. I think ibuprofen is a must for me. I don't need it very often but when I do, and I don't have it, that headache shuts me down. Game over.
a couple of good cigars, some good whiskey for the campfire/cabin/hotel, beef jerky, bug spray, rain gear, & good company.
lol Some of you guys crack me up.
Part way through this post I learned that I have reached my positive feedback limit for the day because
I hit like too many times.
My glock! I'd shower with it if I wouldn't look like a fool. Its like forgetting your underware, feels weird without it.
I would have to say my folding hunting knife. I have gone off without water, and food before.
Scale and Smartphone for pictures and obviously for emergencies.
Skoal...yep stupid habit that I've tried quitting but haven't.
Sunscreen and my phone. I burn very easy.
Steak and Egg Burrito from Jack in the Box. If we skip that, we don't catch fish.
Organization, If I cant find it, its of no use to me.
I am a rider so I have limited space, my backpack without it I cant adjust on the water.
a PB dream
I will be honest with you guys.
I don't even know the answer to my own question yet.
It sure has me thinking though.

I love all of my Glocks. (9mm, 40 S&W and .45)
Unfortunately I live in Illinois and we still can't legally carry them.
Lucky for me I know some Jiu Jitsu and Kick Boxing. lol
Gotta stop at Hardee's on the way to the lake for a a steak biscuit and a sweet tea. Gotta have a Mountain Dew and some Gatorades. I don't really get hungry on the lake. I've always gotta have some extra line in case of a real bad backlash.
Since I fish in pike and muskie infested waters needle nose pliers or jaw spreaders are a must.

We in Illinois have to be #1 at something!
Coming soon apparently though I think we have heard that for a while now...
Headlamp, must have for me, I'm an evening angler.
