Around here, pound for pound, the smallmouth fight harder than any largemouth.

I actually like them about the same. However, I treasure a big smallie over a big black any day.

fishing user avatarrockstar17 reply :

FYI thats not me

fishing user avatarMarty reply :

My experience is that smallies fight much harder than largemouth.

Have you ever caught a large smallie? If you have or ever do you will answer your own question. Smallies are incredibly athletic and very strong. Largemouth are more bulldogish and much slower. We catch alot of both here.

fishing user avatarJake. reply :

I caught my first two smallmouths yesterday and can honestly say that I like catching them better. They weren't very big, but put up a much better fight than any largemouth of that size that I have caught. I can only imagine how a 5 or 6 pounder would fight.

fishing user avatarrockstar17 reply :

I never really went smallmouth fishing and thats part of the reason i did this poll to see if it was worth my time

Thanx on the recommedations and honesty

fishing user avatarBass XL reply :

Def. smallmouths.

thetr20one: That is a beautiful smallmouth.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Hmm...

Given the choice with the same opportunity, I might not ever fish for green trout.

fishing user avatarMNGeorge reply :

Smallies, by far, and river Smallies in particular just don't know how to say "quit".

fishing user avatargrimlin reply :

Smallmouths....I like fishing for both but if given a choice between one over the other i'll take the smallmouths.

fishing user avatarLucky Craft Man reply :

Smallmouth By Far.

fishing user avatarTucson reply :

Gotta vote smallie.   Now if smallies got as big as lm's but still fought like a smallie.........THAT would be a fun fish.

Smallies by far.

No doubt about it.

Nothing compares to the air shows that the smallies give ya. Not to mention how hard they tug at the line.  :)

fishing user avatarMasshole Mike reply :

smallies fo sho!

and is "funner" word? more fun?

fishing user avatarAvalonjohn44 reply :

Smallmouth fight harder, but largemouth have the size thing going for them.  I fish the rivers/streams near me almost as often as ponds/lakes... I love catching both of the 'mouths.

It is a win win situation to me.  Can't lose fishing for either one.  If you held a gun to my head... I'll pick largemouth.

fishing user avatarNumpty reply :

I caught my first couple of Smallies (probably around 3 - 4.5 lbs) didn't weigh they were OOS) this year and they definitely do fight longer/harder.

But I find the LargeMouth in my area more challenging because they head for cover and I will tend to power them in more than I would a SmallMouth in open water.

fishing user avatarStill a Bigbuckifan reply :

wow everone likes smallies better. I got to go with largemouths just because thats all i've caught. but i can't imagin them being that much stronger

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

If you tied a 4 lb smallmouth to the tail of an 8 lb largemouth,

the brown fish would drown the green fish and drag it around

the lake like a boat pulling a boogie board!

Largemouth are usually landed in a minute or two. Smallmouth

are just half done the first time they see the boat. Brown fish

never give up.

fishing user avatarMichBassMan reply :

Smallies,    NO Doubt !

fishing user avatarBassinSoldier reply :

Being from Florida originally I still love a big ol' bucketmouth, but...Moving to Ft. Campbell, KY and having caught a few really nice smallies on KY Lake (4-6lb range) I gotta go with the ol' bronzeback for the fight.  I feel like I am cheating on my wife saying that, lol!  Anyway, I guess I am kinda addicted to the smallies and I try to target them when I can on KY Lake.

fishing user avatarGungle reply :

Smallmouths all the way :)

Cheers,

Gungle

fishing user avatarthetr20one reply :

Fish Erie and get into some open water smallies and you will quickly find out getting them to the boat is a real challenge. At 25-30 feet deep sometimes they will come to the surface twice as fast as you can reel a 7.1-1 reel would make no difference. The you can watch that brown missle come out of the water often throwing your bait. The thing about Erie fishing can be kinda boring until you set the hook and then it's game on. A person who is not used to these fish often loses more than they catch. There are tricks that I can't divulge but once you get it you got it. My PB largemouth is 6 1/2 and I have caught more over 5 than I can count but not one has fought nearly as hard as any smallie over 4. Case in point I went with mydogdamit sunday and caught 4 largemouth 3-5 pounds and not a single one made runs or acrobatics like the three pound smallie I also caught. You can look on the my tournament or outing threads and check out the "bet I wish I lost" thread and see the smallie that out muscled all of the largemouth in those pics.

WHAT!

Okay, here is the #1 trick:

If you are fishing single hooks, use a Medium Power/ Fast Action spinning rig with a drag you can depend on. When a smallmouth first sees your boat, she will bolt, everytime! You really need equipment you can count on.

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

I have to go with smallmouth.  I hooked a 4lb last year and thought I had largemouth at least twice that size on the line.  The fish would just not stop fighting.

Been doing quite a bit of smallie fishing lately.  Man, they pull so hard.  I keep a smile on my face all day long in disbelief how a 14-18 inch fish can strip drag like that.  Pound for pound, they can't be beat!

That is what I thought until I caught my first smallie. I changed my tune instantly. Matter of fact I didn't target largemouth for the next 3 months.

Smallies for sure, not taking anything away from the largemouth. Love'em too, but pound for pound, the smallie has it all over the largie for fight quality. They just don't quit.

Can't wait until you hook into your first smallie. You too will see.  :)

fishing user avatarRedlinerobert reply :

Never fished for smallmouth, I will have to give them a shot. :)

fishing user avatarwagn reply :

smallies do fight harder.

However I personally prefer fishing for Largemmouth. I like the act of targetting lillypads under docks, and fishing in timber. Largemouths tend to hang out more in the junk, and that's what i like fishing.

Although I had the opportunity this past week to fish a lake that has a large number of both smallies and Largemouths. It was a lot of fun. With over 40 fish caught in the week you never knew what you were going to pull out of the water.

fishing user avatarBig-O reply :

For me it would be THE Smallmouth Bass with the largest mouth.

Smallies do fight harder, but I feel the techniques and styles of fishing for LM are much funner.  Smallies are almost "dumb" sometimes and will bite about anyting, much like crappie.  I think LM are a harder challenge and can be more rewarding to catch.  Pound for pound smalls def fight harder, but the problem is they arnt pound for pound... a 6lb smallie is an absolute giant and 6lb LM just averagely big.  You dont really get chances to catch smallies to the sizes that huge LM grow, and I would bet that a large LM is a better fight then a larger SM.  Hook both world records up at the same time and lets see who wins  : )

acually i would rather battle out the world record smallie

which was like 11.6 pounds i think? correct me if im wronge

but i know it was caught out of dale hollow

An almost 12 pound smallie i think will fight harder then a 19 pound or wut ever largemouth

This is a ridiculous post.

Big bass, really big largemouth bass, don't fight at all.

Most HUGE largemouth are landed in a minute

or three at the most. That will NEVER happen

with a 5 lb smallmouth.

No nothing like that guys, it's just everybody has their own little system for smallies on Erie. I just have a couple little tricks besides a fast action rod. And RW Erie smallies are surprisingly bold Often drifting you have 150 feet of line out depending on depth. One of those little tricks is eliminating some of the stretch of mono or flouro while maintianing a small amount of it. I think you can figure that one out right. It's the little things that turn a bite into a boated fish!!

They do get bigger but no chance do they fight harder.  Especially since smallies dont get as big they fight very well.  But because of the largemouths size I much prefer them over smallmouth.  I also like the style of fishing for largemouths.  You dont have to use little finesse plastics and grubs with jigheads or any of that stuff.

Well,

#1 The World Record Smallmouth is 11 lbs 14 oz. So, from a practical standpoint, the brown fish get just as big unless your're catching largemouth teeners all the time! It's true that largemouth have the potential to be larger, but for the vast majority of fisherman, 6-8 lbs is a fine fish.

#2 If you are fishing "little finesse plastics" you're fishing the wrong lures and baits. Big fish like big meals.

fishing user avatarJustin Mahaney reply :

Smallmouth fight much harder than largemouths, However the largemouths do get bigger ofcourse. So I feel there both just as fun to catch because you really need to fish them a different way to be successful.

I don't think that is the case, either. For the most part, lures that work best for largemouth also work best for smallmouth. The only differences in the species involve structure/ cover and current.

Although largemouth certainly relate to structure, smallmouth always associate with it except when following bait schools in open water. Perhaps on some lakes smallmouth can be found in cover, but that is rarely the case in this region.

For river fishermen, current is everything when targeting brown fish. By contrast, it's a rare occasion that a lazy green fish will be found in fast moving water. I catch them there once in awhile, but I think they're just lost or confused!

8-)

fishing user avatarJustin Mahaney reply :

I agree,   however its easier to find large smallies in deeper water where as I find I have more luck pulling out lunker largemouths out of structure and cover near shallow water and/or backwater areas/bays which have much less fishing pressure than your average smallmouth holes.

fishing user avatarbass wrangler569 reply :

Smallmouth fight way harder. I've caught 15" smallies that fought harder than any 6 or 7lb largemouth that I've ever caught.

fishing user avatarsimplejoe reply :

I like the way smallies fight you the whole way to the boat, I mean a largemouth does it to but not like a fat smallie. I think there both fun to catch

fishing user avatarTournyFish001 reply :

I enjoy both species very much and I am lucky where I fish because there are really good numbers of each.  The tactics and location differ but that is what makes it so fun- as far as the fight- yeah a smallie is gunna win a UFC battle over a Largemouth pound for pound- but I get just as big of a rush pulling in a 4lb Largemouth out of the water as a 4Lb Smallmouth. This makes me wanna go fishing in a major way-
