What was your worst fishing purchase decision ever? 2024

fishing user avatartoni63 reply :

Lures, rods, reels, baits, boats, outboards, electronics, the truck to pull the boat or the trailer to put it on. What is your worst purchase ever?

Mine is the Helix 5 SI GPS yada yada. I shoulda saved up another $500 and bought something with a much larger screen. I like the unit and what it does, but its just too small a screen mounted at my feet for me to be able to see it and see it well when fishing. But when they brought out a side imaging/down imaging unit at that price, I just had to give it a shot.

I got sucked into the same thing.   How about I sell you mine and then you'll have a 10" SI GPS...

I plan on using it at the outboard with the transducer mounted on the transom once I get something with a much larger screen for  up front. I'm convinced that is really all they were meant for to begin with now that I have one.

Basspro brand hard baits and hooks.  Thought I was getting a good deal, but it turns out that the hooks rusted in a week and the cranks and jerkbaits were all junk.  Half of them didn't even dive below the surface, and the ones that did never caught anything.  Best I ever did with them is when the bill snapped off of a floating jerkbait when it shouldn't have, and I used it as a spook.  Actually worked pretty good, way better than before it broke.  But you know its junk when it catches more fish once its broken.

I did something very similar.  Bought a Sea Eagle inflatable boat and geared it up with a trolling motor, rod holders and fish finder.  Only took it our once and never had the desire to go through the work again.  Thing still had to be registered too.

Years later I got a fishing kayak so I was able to make use of the rod holders and fish finder so it wasn't a total loss.  Was out $500 for the boat though.  Huge waste of money.  The kayak has been my greatest fishing purchase though and wish I bought it years ago instead of the inflatable.

Whatever the first purchase was because it led to my current tackle buying/hoarding habits haha. I've got a few bad buys with baits I've purchased but never used, or purchased and found out they were absolute garbage. I got the Bajo Minnow Lure Kit for a present when I was a kid and I loved it.  Caught some really nice bass on them.  Seemed like a gimmick but it did work.

fishing user avatarjimf reply :

My second boat, and my first aluminum.   I didn't have much of a budget, but I wanted a 17'+ boat.   I focused more on the engine when I was shopping, failed to really properly inspect the hull.   Lots of loose rivets, and then a stress crack developed on the keel.    I remember that day - it always took on some water, but right after launch it was obvious something something worse was happening.   I thought I must have left the drain plug out, but no ... just a new (and big) leak.   Loose rivets water seeps in, but this was coming in to where the bilge wasn't shutting off.

I never one time felt comfortable in that boat.  Engine ran great, but I spent more time under the boat patching than I did in it fishing.

Ugly?  I think it looks sweet!  Black and Gold Hawkeye colors.  Put it on a Skeet Reese rod if you feel it needs to match.  As much as I like how certain rods and reels look together it still doesn't matter one bit when catching fish.  I'd rather just have quality products.

Over the years I've made my share of stupid fishing purchases.   Back in the day, when I was a meat fishing bush hippie, I bought a European style "keep sack" thinking it would be better than the nylon cord stringers I was using, because I saw it in In-fisherman magazine.  wrong . . . It was just a nylon thin mesh nylon sack, that when it inevitable snapping turtle came around would just chew through the thin nylon to get to the fish.  I think it lasted a couple of trips.

Once upon a time Guido and Dion Hidden were at a bait shop shilling for US Reels.  They were new to the market at a fairly attractive price and they worked great in the parking lot throwing practice plugs so I bought one.   In every day fishing practices, the Hidden performance series  Supercaster 800SX doesn't perform that well at all.  It has been in bait caster prison since I bought it and tried to use it twice.

In my fishing shed I have a large assortment of plastic baits that I can honestly asked myself,  "Just what was it that prompted me to buy that bait?"   . . . cause I can't remember.

This ugly reel. Never have used it, just collecting dust. Could never find a rod I was sure it would look good on.

Still have it it brand new in boxes with paddle, air pump and everything elses. Too chicken to take out on big lake like lake Perris.

I must be fun walking in those slippers.

All the flippin raffle tickets I've bought at local open tournaments I fished over the years.  I bet Iv'e purchased several hundred dollars worth and won ONE item, some screen cleaner, screen cleaner, did I say screen cleaner that's just water and vinegar in a 4 ounce spray bottle.. It's a conspiracy, I'm sure of it. The last event two weeks ago, some little urchin with no teeth won about eight items on 20 bucks worth of tickets.  I swear, the free hot dogs could have passed for five inch Senkos in color 176.  My God son and I were one place out of the money.  Love to fish those those opens. I'm gonna go wash my truck after I take my pill.

I still have a box of the original Flying Lure  dad bought them when I was a teenager, we just slayed them the first time we used them, however, they steadily became less effective? I think my worst purchase was a shimano rod from Walmart. Broke in half after a couple weeks.

I bought Flying Lures when they first came out as well. I caught fish on them the first trip I used them (hey, I was like 12) and never caught another on any of them I had again.

I was about the same age, maybe a year or two older. I found one laying in my tackle box the other day so I tied it on just for the heck of it and wouldn't you know it, I didn't catch a d**n thing

I would agree on buzz baits. I have never caught a fish or had a bite on one. I never used helicopter lures, but I did use banjo minnows. Since I was a failure at figuring them out, I used the minnow bodies on jig heads and as replacement beetle spin bodies, for that purpose they actually work.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

A number of years ago I purchased the BIO PULSE SYSTEM as it was developed and designed by an LSU professor to attract spawning bass.

The lure is six-inches long and designed on the same platform as the Shad Rap.

However, it has a hollow body where you add the fluid that has the Bio Pulse System Sci-X Feeding Stimulant Foam.

So does it work? Nope. Not even a missed strike.

I sent an email to the professor and he told me that the lure was released too early in their research and that he and his staff were working on an updated version that should perform as promised.

I have not found out the name of the new bait, nor do I know if it has ever been released.

I don't think I will invest in the new version.

If anyone out there knows anything about this bait please let us know. Thanks.

I got the black one to try her out. Nada thus far. Still have it though, so I'm hopeful.

I have the black one w/ yellow accents and the bone colored one. Neither one has produced. For a $15 lure it was a total bust. After an hour of using it in the early morning I switched to a Heddon Spit'N Image and caught a bass in less than 5 minutes.

I'm surprised by the above comments that you guys aren't getting bit on the plopper and those colors in general.  I only throw the 130 and was skeptical of the lure at first. But when they want to eat it, it's more like they want to kill it. Just keep chucking it, it'll pay off!

I don't know if I got a faulty Abu Garcia rod and reel combo, but that was the biggest waste of money I have ever spent. I thought I was just bad at baitcasters, but then I bought a Lew's Speed Stick. Now I can fish...

I have found that I don't catch a ton of fish on the plopper but when I do they are good ones. Unless I am around smallies then I can catch numbers. Bass seem to be very particular about size and color when they eat the plopper. I've had buddies outcatch me 10 to 1 because I had a different size or color. I'd say keep throwing it and they'll pay off soon enough.
