If you were, by some divine mandate, allowed to fish only with a Zebco 202 combo and the stuff that's usually part of one of those cheapy starter kits , would you still bother?
As a twist, wouldn't it be kind've funny to restrict a professional tournament to Snoopy or Barbie poles? Maybe as a charity event.
Okay, I know I'm strange but boredom does that to a person.

My PB 6.5 lbs was caught on a Zebco 202 because my fancy rig broke. I borrowed it off my buddy, had it in his truck for his kid. I did however use a big juicy Arkie jig and Uncle Josh black widow eel so I had a decent lure. The short answer is YES, if it's all I had, I would fish with it. You are way too bored brother.

Most likely. I learned to fish on those, so it wouldn't be much different than fishing as a kid.
I probably wouldn't fish for bass as much as I do now. I would fish for gills and crappie more.

Our local club has an "informal" tournament circuit that we fish on local lakes and is more for bragging rights than anything else. We have been discussing our schedule for next year and I proposed a "back to basics" tournament for one of the events - we only fish from the bank, only one rod/reel, live bait would be an option and we would assign points based not only on size of the fish but for species.
You would have thought I was proposing that we fish naked - the response was an overwhelming "NO!!" from the boaters - the non-boaters in the club thought it was a cool idea. Funny how we get locked into our high $ tools and toys - I'm pretty sure we all started this way and grew to where we are now.

I'd go for it. I use the old spincaster when I take the boy out Those cheapo lures that come in those kits are great for panfish.

You bet. I still have a Zebco 202 and a cheap 5 1/2' casting rod so I've already got the gear. I would like the option of having a better bait selection though... :

I possess certain rods and reels (which are decent but nowhere near top end) mostly because I detest struggling with junk and tangled line. Similarly, I bought a new pickup rather than a beater with a heater simply because I want something reliable that won't break down (and because a good used pickup is nearly as costly as a new one). On the other hand, I have a plethora of lures for two reasons-first, because I like being more versatile but also because it's just a lot of fun to fish and collect a lot of lures. So, for me, if I could keep the lures I have and be restricted to a Zebco combo, that would be...okay. Not great but okay. This isn't to say, of course, that a Zebco can do all the things a better/more appropriate rod and reel can do. It can't. But I could live with it. If I had to be confined in both areas, I'd probably still fish but not nearly so often.

Not a 202, but a 33 would be fine.

I like this kind of stuff. Back in the day, when we raced dirt bikes there was a "Vintage Class" dedicated to bikes 10yrs old or more. This allowed folks with a lower budget to enjoy the competition without feeling out-classed. There were a handful that could jump on a 20 yr old bike and give someone on a brand new one more than they could handle.

Would I rather fish a Uber light, sensitive setup? Yes.
And we should have a Bass Resource tournament with only Barbie poles, Cars poles etc ;D Dont just limit it to the pros!

1) I'd fish with mono wrapped around a Coke can if I had to.
2) I'd love to see a tournament where there were no electronics of any kind allowed. It would be interesting to see how they would adapt and overcome.
3) The hand through the gill plates ?

Hmm...Gear is half the fun. I like technique specific rods;
strong, smooth, silent and reliant reels; high-tech lines and
designer lures. The whole package is fun to play with and fish.
I have no interest in going back to the old junk.

I guess I would, its not nearly as fun but at least I would be out fishing. I have 6 misc setups of spincast reels at home for guest that want to fish our pond so I am good to go! 8-)
I have all those setups because my wife thought that her and her friends could figure out how to use my baitcasters.... When I found out I had to respool 3 reels :'(... Wife doesn't touch MY poles anymore and she has her setup to entertain her friends and family when they come over lol.

I agree that I wouldn't want to go back to the old junk but the hypothetical question proposed was, "If you were, by some divine mandate, allowed to fish only with a Zebco 202 combo and the stuff that's usually part of one of those cheapy starter kits , would you still bother?" If I had to go back to the old junk and didn't have a choice, I would still fish.
I agree with J Francho too. The Zebco 33 was the spincast reel of choice for me back in the day.

I was thinking about this thread earlier today and the comments about having tournaments limited to this back-to-basics type of gear. Then I related that to automotive spec racing and wondered where a fishing "spec class" would go.
Can you imagine "supertuned" Zebco 202s? Rod handles removed and special resins applied inside the blank to improve sensitivity (is that possible?). Buying hundreds of the spec lure(s) to select the best ones. Hook hangers and line ties on the spec lures removed and drilling or weighting performed to make the bait run better or to alter the character of the bait. Weighing/measuring/pull testing the spec line to select those batches with superior performance. And on and on....!
Once all of that happened, then the organizers would through their hands up in the air and just buy all the stock "spec" equipment and issue it to the competitors just prior to the tournament ... ;D

Yes, I would still fish with the "lesser" gear, I think. I still have my old Shakespear Wonder Rod that I used fifty years ago.
I kinda refurbished it last year so I could try fishing with it. I replaced the bandaids and adhesive tape that were holding some of the eyes in place with electrical tape.
I have not been able to find the old Pfleuger Freespeed spinning reel that was on it, so I purchase a new econo Shimano for about 30 bucks. Spooled it with 6 pound Trilene mono, rigged it up with an Owner Sled Head and four inch Zoom lizard.
I'd been having good luck with that setup, so that's what I used. Casting was a chore because the rod is soooooooo flexible. Retrieving it was even worse, with the rod being so limber, and the mono so stretchy, I had no feel whatever.
Back in the day, I thought that Shakespeare rod was great. Compared to even the entry level stuff like my BPS Extremes it was like trying to fish with a cooked noodle.
I have caught some nice fish on that rod, but can only imagine how much better I would have done with today's equipment.
But, if it was all I had, I would fish with it. Given a choice, it will stay safe and dry in my home. I keep it only for sentiment.
