I suspect it’s more profound the farther north you live. This time of year I’m happy that the hot humid days are done and the fishing can be spectacular but... cold and hard water are pretty close.
Im on my lunch break from work.... looking at a perfect fishing day... knowing only a few of these days remain... hoping the forecast aligns with my days off (Not looking good at the moment).
Ice fishing just isn’t my thing.

Oh yeah, cloudy days will be gone in a few weeks leaving us with clear blue skies, blazing sun and high 70's/low 80's temps .......

I love fishing this time of year. The bite is usually good, the humidity and 80-90 degree days are done. The scenery is also great in the fall too. I keep fishing right until the fish stop biting, or the water freezes. But it is in the back of my mind that the season is winding down. Cold weather doesn’t stop me from fishing, but hard water does. I’m like you, ice fishing doesn’t seem appealing to me. I’ve toyed with the idea of a guided ice trip this year just to cure the cabin fever, but I just can’t get myself excited for it.

The days are few and far between now. I want to get out at least 2 more times, but the fall rush is here at work and everyone is getting the last bit of digging in before the snow flies and the ground freezes.
I'm not much of an ice fisherman either. Too much work to move spots. Much easier hitting the TM and cruising to a new spot.

That's so crazy how different it is in different parts of the country. Here in south TX the bite is just starting to pick up after the sweltering summer days. It's just starting to get good. Water temps in low 80's.
This is the most exciting part of the year (besides spawn).

I am with you there here in Minnesota there are only a couple good days left we jad our forst frost last night i may get to do one more tournament in 2 weeks of i can find a boater to pair with to so a team tourney here

Things are still far from over here in MA. Water temps still in the mid 60's. I like ice fishing so I never minded the cool down, I just hate the gap between soft and hard water.

Yep... we had our first snow yesterday - just a couple of inches and it's gone now. Pretty common now for our Indian summer to last for another month. When I was still working, it seemed like the nice days were always on work days, never on weekends. Now it doesn't matter what day of the week it is - in fact, I mostly avoid weekends because that's when the crowds are out.
I have my last men's club golf tournament this weekend, but I will still get out to the course a few more times, as well as hitting a couple of local ponds a few more times before I wimp out in the cold weather. Then I just daydream about next spring, prepare the garage for storing the new canoe I'm buying over the winter so I can get off the bank, and generally get myself psyched up for next year. I ice fished in Minnesota once, and in Montana a couple of times... didn't get very enthusiastic about it.

Here in fly-over country, we're just getting on the back side of the first big cold front of the fall. It should warm up and clear off tomorrow and stay clear for a few days with beautiful fall weather. I'll be hittin' the local community lake as often as possible. The bass should be chasing shad in the shallows and I'll be all over them.

We should be in fall temps now but we are not in eastern PA. Saturday water temps on the river were 67-70 degrees. Air temps have been staying in the mid to high 60's over nights. In my opinion a fall pattern has not started yet. This season has been weird in so many ways that it might be unforgettable. Somewhere around September 7th-9th we got a cool snap and the fishing was great on back to back days. Since than they have been biting but I'm not seeing the baitfish activity over the last few weeks. For me I'm not sure how it will play out. It will get cold that's a given.
No hard water fishing for me. Stream trout I fish for during the winter.

Temperatures are still in the 80's here with the heat index ranging from 90-100. Morning humidity is around 100% but drops into the 70's or 80's by the afternoon. Hopefully it will cool down soon so the alligators go into hibernation for a while, but this time of year they frequent the banks (instead of staying in the water) to soak up the sun.
The only drawback right now is that it gets dark early so I don't get to fish after work. But at least I still have most weekends to fish.

Yesterday it was humid, plus we had a warm light rain. These are the days to be fishing even if you can go in the evenings. I would be in my favorite spot at 4:30pm. Fish till dark. They do turn on as the sun starts to go down. Don't let this unusual warm weather slip by.

It's so humid right now in north carolina, and we're stuck in the 70s and 80s. It feels sticky outside and certainly nothing like fall weather. I'm hoping it cools off before the state fair.

will be fishing as much as i can til around Christmas then i usually give my shoulder a month off, do some pm on the boat, and honey-do items. lake hasn't iced over here in years.

It's very bleak A-Jay. I have no desire to ever experience snow ever again. Much less live in it.
My Aunt lives at 8,000 ft in the mountains of Golden, Co. and I don't know how she does it.
Different strokes for different folks.
I think there may have been 1 weekend so far in 2017 that I have not been fishing. I plan to keep on pace. I will fish harder for those of you who can't, and make a few extra casts in honor.

Yep. Water temps are just now getting to peak fall fishing around me but you know how quickly things can change up here. I feel like we have 2 or 3 more weeks of good fishing left. After that its slow rolling jerkbaits and dragging small jigs before the ice comes. (Agreed, ice fishing doesn't cut it.)

I am very lucky. I fish a lot. I'm not missing many chances , trust me. i have instant access out my front door. But it gets dark so early now that I only get about 30 min on weeknights. Weekends have been less cooperative lately. Fall fishing really start d a few weeks ago by me. It's still going and I think we have a few great weeks still left but then.... cold, snow, and ice take over pretty quick.

We're still in the lower 90s and upper 80s during the day and lower 70s and upper 60s at night. Fall bite hasn't started here yet, at least not for me. At this point I'm not sure if fall is ever really gonna get here...lol. ?

Water temps are still in the mid to high 60's here, and still going over 70 on really warm days............which we have had TOO MANY of for this time of year. It has made the summer to fall transition drag on a little bit. The fish are either really deep or really shallow, and kinda spread out right now, the true fall bite has yet to start. As each day passes it is slowly slipping into fall. Grass has barely started to thin out, and the nights haven't been all that cool. I think we have had only one light frost so far. About the only change we have had, is the days are getting shorter, and my afterwork trips are all but done. I am now limited to weekends, and my Thursday off. Even the country side is "greener" than normal for this time of year. I fully expect to be fishing well into late November maybe even early December, unless something drastic happens. I usually put the boat up when the water gets below 40 degrees.

I always hate to see the season come to a close. When I was younger I ice fished, but as I got older I gave it up. It was taking too much effort to chop a hole in the ice big enough to put the boat in. Especially if you like trolling.

I'm fortunate enough to live by the Jersey Shore and the fall striper run should start heating up as the temperatures begin to drop. I haven't gone freshwater fishing since the Tautog started moving into our jetties. It is bittersweet, but as one season closes, another one opens.

I was seriously addicted to that striped bass fishery ~ Serious Rock Hopper !

I don't ice fish so this time of year is bitter-sweet. You know that bass fishing for the year is coming to an end but the fishing is so good. The older I get, the longer the winters seem to be.

Nice fish! I live in Atlantic County and we fish down in Stone Harbor/Wildwood from our kayaks often. We've caught schoolies all summer in the back bays but can't wait for those bigger ones to get down here.

Spankey I'm in central PA and know how you feel. The weather has been all over the place and of course first day off and it rained all day and night till 3am today. So much for the moving waters I was lookin forward to pond hopping it is.

Ice fishing is actually extremely addicting once you get the hang of it. October and November should continue to be good fishing, but December and early January is when it really sucks up here. Weak ice and bad fishing. By mid-January it should be really nice again. Here's a little pump-up for the select hard-water enthusiasts

Could never get into ice fishing. Fortunately where I live, fall lasts a little longer. Also I can bowhunt deer here through January, because of extended seasons and multiple doe tags. By February I can start hitting the power plant lakes. Even though february is still cold. It's better than sitting around the house.

When I grew up in Minnesota (early 60's), guys had their fishing huts out on the ice all winter, with heaters and chairs. They just drove out to the hut to fish, then drove home again when done. Not too rough that way.
One hut I visited with a friend was different from the norm. They cut a 3' x 6' hole over about 6 feet of water and spear fished. They just waited for something worthwhile to swim by, then chucked a spear at it.

Gosh...this is another thing I thank the good Lord for. I've never had to ice fish....I will mention I wanted to try it once but that feeling soon passed. Smallmouth on Norris Lake in winter, flat water, no boats, suns coming up as the fog is lifting......Oh...My...Gosh.
