Ever catch a snake or a frog while bass fishing? 2024

fishing user avatarGuitarist86 reply :

I caught both today on a senko ;D....along with 5 bass.

Nothing was biting no matter what i used so i figured i'd give the senko's a try that were buried at the bottom of my box.

The water i was fishing in was about 2 feet at the most. I started skipping the senko on top when i saw a splash...i let it sink a little and when i felt a tug i started reeling and a giant frog had the whole thing in his mouth  :o I also had a water snake latch on to the end of the worm and he wouldn't let go until i got a few inches from shore. Weird day...

fishing user avatarDavid P reply :

I catch decent size bullfrogs on top water frogs.. The frogs hide under topwater weeds and junk, and while i'm bringing the frog along the top, I see a bullfrog just leap out and get on top of that frog and hug'em.

i wonder how the hook affects a frog as opposed to a fish being hooked.. anyone know if it does any damage ?

fishing user avatarSDoolittle reply :

I used to catch a lot of frogs when I was a kid. If the fish weren't biting I'd find a bullfrog and dangle my lure in front of his face. I took home a lot of frog legs that way.

fishing user avatarcpvenom reply :

Once while bringing a hooked bluegill out of the water, a watersnake "jumped" out of a bush and latched on to the fish. Took a bit of snaking to get it to let go. It was really cool!

fishing user avatarNEBassMan reply :

yep...hooked through the mouth on a Spro Bronzeye

fishing user avatarperch-jerker60 reply :

Wow, hooked a couple water moccasins before.  That frog would do wonders down here in Mississippi!!!

fishing user avatarNate reply :

yea... i fish this small farm pond every once in a while and if you use a topwater frog it is almost certain that you will catch at least one of the two...

fishing user avatar.dsaavedra. reply :

my dad snagged this one w/ a weedless spoon while fishin a farm pond. it was swimmin in the water when he snagged it...(made me take it off the hook tho! thing bit me too  :'()

mos-5-2.jpg

when i go bluegill fishin down at my pond, there are always massive (i mean massive) amounts of really big bullfrog tadpoles (golfball sized). sometimes if the fish arent biting, ill toy w/ then and snag them. i took my blowgun down there once to get a few...worked too!

fishing user avatarJayW reply :

I caught over 20 Bull Frogs on a  jerk bait one day fishing in the grass! :o It was kinda fun!  ;D

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

I 've done something even stranger than hooking a snake, frog or a turtle, I hooked a clam !  :o

I went fishing to a small lake between Silao and Romita, while fishing a plastic worm I felt a mushy sensation, set the hook and began reeling in, it just felt a little bit heavy, to my surprise there was a 2 inch closed clam grabbing the line  :-? . Later I asked and the locals told me that there were freshwater clams in that lake.

fishing user avatarT-rig reply :

As kid I would catch frogs with my fly rod on purpose but only if the fish wouldn't bite.

At least that way I got my entertainment.

Guitarist86, what did you do to your cat? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

fishing user avatarcrayon7 reply :

I caught this thing last weekend. Pretty mad about the whole thing but ehh what could he do I had a 4ft stick. Goin back out there today too. Happy fishing all.

That is um, a mean thing to do. Snagging a tadpole will kill it and shooting it with a blowgun (Same as a airsoft gun?) will kill it to. Those are some poor fishing ethics there...

ON TOPIC:

I never caught a frog or a snake while fishing and I hope I never do. I would rather catch a bass ;)

edit:

I just notice your T-shirt says "*** FISHING" ;D ;D ;D

fishing user avatarbassnleo reply :

I've also caught both snakes and frogs. Neither bother me but if my fishing partner is in the boat look out, he comes unglued.

I once hooked a snake on a worm, brought it to the boat, he told me if I brough it IN the boat we were fighting ;D.

Two local lakes have abundant populations of water snakes that like to hang from shady trees alomg the water. While fishing one afternoon, I got my jig hung up along shore, went in under some low hangng branches to retreive it, 2 snakes were hangng down, I slid by till they were between me and partner then I told him....Not a pretty sight. Once we got back into open water and away from the snakes he told me to hold on. I didn't quite get it until I was in the water, he waited till I had my back turned then nudge me overboard :D. I laughed my behind off, even soaking wet, least it was hot and the dip felt good!

fishing user avatarrdneckhntr reply :

I caught a few frogs...if i caught a snake my line would be cut...i dont care how expensive of a lure it is...

On the way home from a trip 2 weeks ago we saw a black snake so i pulled over n the guy i was takin home(thought he was gonna kill it) ran back n picked it up...he tried to have me let him take it home with him but there was no way in hell i was gonna let him get near me with that thing...it was about 5ft long...

fishing user avatararmesjr reply :

i caught a turtle on a Pop R yesterday night.   Luckily it unhooked itself as i was pulling it on land.   I have never caught a frog but i see a lot of them chasing after my topwater frogs.  maybe that is were zoom came up with the name horny toads.

fishing user avatarFishing Buds reply :

I caught a deep diving crank bait on Paca craw carolina rig, my buddy swears it was his he lost in the same spot two seasons ago.  :-?

I still kept it ;D

fishing user avatarWhiteMike1018 reply :

Of course.

The garden snake took a 4" Berkley Power Worm.

Luckily he didnt get the hook. :)

fishing user avatarcaptaininsaneo reply :

I hate a snake chasing after a zara puppy a few weeks back, it struck at it several times before I could get my lure back to the dock.  It really was a site to see.

fishing user avatarT-rig reply :

I didn't catch a frog or or a snake but this huge filleted perch. This must be biggest perch I have ever seen! Caught it on a 7" senko and released it ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D!

A FEW YEARS AGO, I WAS FISHING WITH A GUY ON THE APPALACHACOLA (SPELLING?) RIVER IN NORTHWEST FLORIDA AND HE CAUGHT A BABY ALLIGATOR ON A WORM BY DANGLING IT IN IT'S FACE.  ALSO SAW ONE THAT WAS 10 FT PLUS.  GOOD DAY OTHERWISE. HE LOST A 10LBER AT BOAT AND NUMEROUS 4-5 LBERS WHEN TIDE WAS MOVING.  NO TIDE - NO FISH. I WAS FISHING OUT OF THE BACK OF BOAT AND HAD NEVER FLIPPED BEFORE AND ONLY CAUGHT DINKS. ONLY TIME I HAVE EVER FISHED IN TIDAL WATER BUT I WOULD RECOMMEND IT IF YOU CAN FIND A GOOD GUIDE OR HAVE ACCESS.  HOWEVER LEAVE GATORS ALONE. I WAS LOOKING OVER MY SHOULDER THE WHOLE TIME AFTER I SAW THE FIRST ONE.

ive had that happen to me raul ive never gotten frog or snake though i even hooked a rock once on a crank bait weird  ;D

fishing user avatarBASS fisherman reply :

I caught a frog once with a tube. I was pulling the tube out of the water and a frog jumed out and grabbed it and as it lifted into the air, he let go.

I also caught a rock once, also on a tube. That thing put up one hell of a fight too!

I also caught a snapping turtle one night on a senko.

fishing user avatardman reply :

what do you guys do with the frogs?   I had a huge bullfrog on a senko yesterday and thank god he got himself off!

Do you just cut your line and say goodbye to your lure (though i have no problem doing that with a senko)?   Or do you try and help the frog out and free him from the hook?  Doesnt seem like it would be easy!

Is that a copperhead?  He looks mad, lol.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Nope. Never caught a frog or a snake.

My friend did catch a boot on the James River.  He threw it back over my objections to try to find its mate.

Kid across the street caught a turtle in local pond fishing with me.  We cut the line.

Friend I know caught a goose when the bird flew into the line as he was casting it.  Bird was OK after he had the line untangled from his feet.

While growing up in Louisiana we did reel in only the heads of grey trout after the sharks hit them on the way in but we never could hook one of those sharks.

I am still looking for dead bodies east of Richmond, Virginia on the James River. I'll let you all know if I see or hook any.

fishing user avatarTin reply :

No but when day I'am fishing a tourney, its 2:30, no fish in the well. I pull up to a patch of pads and start flinging a scum frog accross them when I notice a 2' snake swimming after my frog then about a six and a half pounder comes up and eats the snake that is a foot behind my frog. Just my luch I guess :)

fishing user avatarewokmonsta720 reply :

I hooked a clam on two different occassions, and once I hooked a HUGE snapping turtle ( I think it was a snapper) right by the mouth. When I pulled it out it was hissing at me and luckily the hook broke so I didn't have to mess with de-hooking it and I kept my "little joe".

fishing user avatarbasspro48 reply :

I was fishing Claytor Lake earlier this summer and I was fishing steep rocky banks with a GYCB hula grub on a 3/8oz jighead. I was just hopping it along when I felt the usual tap tap, which in my mind told me I had yet another spotted bass. So I set the hook and the "bass" did not move, after a couple seconds it started slowly coming towards me, at this point I thought it was a catfish or carp. But once I got him to the boat I saw that it was a 30lb snapping turtle :o

I didn't want to cut the line because I had him hooked perfectly in the corner of the mouth and those rockhopper jigheads are expensive. So i got him next to the boat, whipped out some Channel locks and gripped his bottom jaw while my dad held onto his tail, I then went in with the needle nose and twisted the hook out. He ruined my jighead but I figured it was worth it since doesn't have to swim around with a hula grub pinned to his face all the time.

But on a more serious note, DO NOT mess around with big snappers. They can take your fingers clean off in a snap, and this one almost got my dad (my dad grabbed his tail and he whipped his head around like a shark and barely missed taking his hand off)

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

I've never caught one but once this year and once last year while the boat has been pulled up on the bank snakes have gotten in the mud under the boat. It woke me up real quick when I was pushing the boat out into the water and I saw that my foot was about 6 inches away from that sucker.

fishing user avatar=Matt 5.0= reply :

Oooops, thought I had a monster bass on........ :-?

fishing user avatarMicro reply :

I love snakes with a passion.  I go out looking for them as much as I can.  When I'm fishing, I'll drop everything to catch a snake.  Here are some pics of snakes I've come across (not necessarily hooked)while fishing.

I caught this big Black Rat Snake during a fishing trip.  I saw him come off the shore and swim towards the center of the lake.  I used my trolling motor to come up behind him and I snatched him from the water.  I brought him home and teated him for skin mites and a stuck eye lens, then let him go in a nearby National Historical Park.

This is a Northern Water Snake I came across while fishing.  Naturally, I had to poke it with my rod.  It went into the water and made several mad dashes for my boat.  After awhile, I lost sight of it.  That's because it attempted to climb up my outboard into my boat.  That's where I caught him.

Here is a cute little fellow I caught by a foot bridge near a favorite fishing hole.  Gotta be careful of this guy, he can ruin your whole summer.

Find me if you can!

Here's another Northern Water Snake I caught a few months ago.  Snatched him outta the water, too.

catch1.jpg

Nippy little bass-turd.  It was a Bite-And-Run.

And a cute little Eastern Ribbon Snake on the same trip.

fishing user avatarwagn reply :

never caught a snake or frog. but i have caught plenty of freshwater mussels. If you crank across the bottom of the Merrimack river in NH, the mussels will close on the treble hooks as they go by. I've caught 3 little ones in one retrieve. It's a real pain in the @ss when trying to crank flats.
