We have two daschunds. They are brother and sister from the same litter. We are wanting to take them on the boat this summer. BPS actually has dog life vests. Even for our two 8 pound dogs! LOL! Anyone else take thei dogs along?

I have a few times. My dog is a mix between st. Bernard and golden retriever. He is 2 years old and quite a handful. Even launching the boat can be a pain because he is so interested in what's going on.
He barks at every one and everything that moves. He comes up front every time I catch a fish to check it out.
The biggest issue is he loves to swim. And stands at the edge of the boat like he is ready to jump in at any moment. That's where it's a pain. Constantly babysitting him and talking to him so he won't jump in.
I took him yesterday for the first time this year. Every time I take him I swear it's the last 
I just feel bad leaving him home.
If someone on shore asks me how the fishing is, he acts like a douce bag, barking like a mad man.
I have tried everything to get him to relax, but he's just high strung.

I want to be clear, this is with my bass boat.
My cabin cruiser is another story. No problems on a big boat.

I'm thinking about taking her out some time. We are also looking at a Mini Ossie puppy, which would be just the right size on a yak, but probably little too playful. Worth a shot though... I'll probably take her camping with us on the Bro Only Camping trip.

2 German Wire Haired Pointers (very energetic) dosent work out well at all. Especially when they are trained to retrieve birds or dummy's when being trained, I'm pretty sure they think my lure is a bird or dummy. Last year the younger of the two (2 year old) decided he wanted to bite a fly my brother was using for blue gills. That wasn't fun at all, Pliers to a hook in a dogs lip makes a dog a little jumpy.

I have a 30 pound black and white dog, Oreo, origins unknown. She loves to go fishing with me. She is very good in the boat, sits behind me on the rear deck when I am going across the lake with the outboard. And stands on the bow when using the trolling motor. She barks at a few things but is content to just smell the air, lick the fish water off of fish tails, and just chill out. I also have a 100 pound German shepherd I dont take her unless my wife goes, handling both of them would leave me no time to fish, but my shepherd is very well behaved in the boat. Its just getting her into the boat. She is a very pretty shepherd and people are always wanting to see her and get close to her, she is very protective, and is not user friendly, so it takes 2 to handle them both. My son has a Lab he takes on occasion but has the problem with him wanting to swim, and then he has a hard time getting him back in the boat. Best advice I could give is try it, but watch the hooks when casting, make sure you know where they are, and PLENTY OF WATER, 2 bowls in case one spills. I love dogs, they are a very large part of our lives, I could not imagine living without dog fur on everything!

I have had two fishing dogs. One was a corgi that LOVED to hunt and fish. But she was rather mercenary about it. It was all about free on-the-hoof vittles for her. I had to get to the squirrels, grouse and pheasants first or there wouldn’t be much left of them. That’s one thing about corgi’s –they love to eat and they can hold an incredible amount of food, or garbage, whatever comes first. One day she disappeared on trash day and I had just weighed her at 22lbs. She reappeared an hour later with her belly dragging on the ground, and could scarcely breathe. I re-weighed her at 33lbs! She had a full pure breed show name "Mar Howie’s Harlequin Fox", but we affectionately called her “Hoover”.
She loved to fish and one day I visited a small pond to do some culling of stunted bluegills. They were too small to eat so I unceremoniously pitched each into the woods for the raccoons. Then I started hearing loud crunching sounds coming from the woods. She was eating them! And she ate too many and then threw them up. It was pretty disgusting. But, she developed a taste for raw fish that day, and became an ever more inspired fishing companion.
She took to retrieving fish then, but for very selfish purposes. One time I was on the Lake Ontario shoreline and catching big brown trout. My dog would wade out and grab hold of those big trout by the tail or by the dorsal fin and haul ‘em in. I’d had to get to the fish quickly before the carnage began however. She’d retrieve other people’s fish too so I’d have to warn ‘em. “Oh, I like dogs,” was the usual reply. “Hmmmmmm…”, I’d think. “Just let me know if she bothers you.” What ensued was rather comical. I’d have to separate the dog from the fish and accept the looks of shock and horror on the angler’s faces.
She was obedience trained so I could take her anywhere and we wandered ponds and streams together often. She’d sit on the bank and watch each cast like a hawk, licking her lips all the while. If I wasn’t catching I’d turn around and she’d be gone. I’d wander up to the next fisherman and there she’d be, watching his casts, her head swinging like a pendulum following the lure on each cast and retrieve like she was watching a tennis match.
One day, on a good pool on a small warmwater creek another fisherman appeared next to us.
“Good morning.”
“Good morning. If my dog bothers you, just let me know.”
“Oh, I love dogs. She won’t bother me at all.”
“Hmmmmm…. Just let me know if she bothers you.”
The guy hooks a walleye and as he’s trying to beach it, the dog is right there with him, and lunges! The man pushes her away and her teeth clack loudly in the air. A miss! She lunges again! He shoves her away. Her teeth clack again. Suddenly there’s a fight for the fish, the guy shoving, jaws snapping, mud flying. It didn’t help that he was something of a newb and not very smooth in his fish handling technique. I finally went over and scooped that muddy little pig of a dog up. The guy was red-faced -a bit out of breath- and I apologized but was dying laughing inside. It was such a funny scene.
Loved that dog. Would share photos but they’re not with me right now. We did an awful lot together.

With 9 foot gators a yard from the boat hull I would not risk my dog in the boat. I had a chocolate lab that would attack a gator in the water if he saw one, and that would be all she wrote. Gators just love dogs for lunch. There is way too much to watch out for while on the water, then a dog.

I would love to take my dog, but he is a spaz & way too big for my boat. He'd enjoy going, but would either sink the boat or knock gear into the water.

I am on my fourth Dachshund. She can be seen in my avatar with my Shepard. All my dogs have loved to fish and boat. I only had one that would go into the water after the fish as I was reeling it in.

never taken my yellow lab on a boat but i assume she would love the cool breeze blowing off the water and would be perfectly content just sun bathing on the deck but i quickly learned my lesson about taking her with me when im on foot...no matter how much i cuss and scream, she wont stay out of the water lol

It's a rare day on the water that our Golden isn't in the boat with me. Last night was one of those nights, she'll still be pouting about that until we go next. I got home and not sure I've ever seen eyes look that sad. She's been going with me since she was just a puppy.
Now she's a seasoned vet with 2 years on the water to her credit. She's super laid back on the boat, big fish are the only thing she gets excited about. Little fish rarely get more than a passing sniff.

I used to take my Jack Russell all the time. One day after my wife and I had fished for about five hours without a fish, we finally call it a day. As we are getting the boat up on the trailer, my dog (Tucker) dives into an area of thick weeds and slop about 8 inches deep and surfaces with a 12 inch largemouth in his mouth. Embarrassing to be outfished by a dog!

We never took my dog out much fishing, he didn't like the boat. Was really scared and whined the whole time trying to find a way off. When we would get near rocks or docks he would get near the edge as if he was gonna try to jump it but never did, I guess he didn't really want to swim.
One time we were fishing in thick pads and I saw him get close to the edge but didn't think anything of it. There he went, tried to step on out on to the pads as if they were dry land, and in he went. A big surprise to him.

I never took the dogs in the boat but fishing from shore they always came along . If they were in the boat they would have been getting in the way and certainly hooked .

We use to have a coon hound that went fishing with us. Never took the dog out in a boat, but she went with us a lot when we fished from shore.

The good luck charm! I don't think I'd know what to do with myself if we weren't dodging her while scrambling to get the net!

She's been gone MANY years but she went wherever I went - including in the boat. She'd get all excited when I had a fish on...but as soon as I landed the fish she'd take one sniff, turn up her nose, then go back and lay down.
She was a great dog....

This comment made me think of this picture, that pretty well describes my dogs way of thinking as well.
