Does anyone actually LIKE, or dare I say LOVE winter fishing??? 2024

fishing user avatargotarheelz14 reply :

I can honestly say I love it. I don't know why. The fish I've caught have pretty much all been quality fish and I have gotten what is probably my second and maybe 5th largest fish ever.

I honestly feel like I can relax more just because I have to fish so slow. This really fits my style too since I love fishing plastics and jigs. Also, because I get far fewer fish, every single one of them feels so much more rewarding.

I have also learned a TON about the anatomy of lakes and have also learned how to dissect a lake and its structure and features. Because I have had to think about wintering holes, and deep structure, I have become more adept at finding these in lakes. Well at least I can say I have an easier time finding these features.

When it all comes down to it, I guess it's mostly a matter of the personal satisfaction I get at knowing that what I've caught, I've had to work so hard for.

I think the winter has finally done me in  ;D

I'll admit that it's not my favorite time but it's a time of year where you can do some damage on my river. The downside is that we go thru Periods where it seems that you cant get a fish to bite. The thing I like best about it is that you earn your bites and you get to work on your patience and techniques

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

I do, it's my favorite time to catch big bass is from late December-March ;)

fishing user avatarRandySBreth reply :

I do love the cold weather fishing. Not only can it be great for fishing, most guys park their boat to watch football or hunt or whatever, and don't get it back out until March or April. Nothing like driving down to launch the boat and no one else is at the ramp, and you see only a few other boats all day. Oh - no PWC's (Jet-Ski's) either. ;D

fishing user avatarSam reply :

No.  ;)

fishing user avatarQuillback reply :

Winter fishing has been great at times here in NW Arkansas, caught my personal best - 9.2 - this Friday.  Had some of my best days numbers wise also.

Downside is that there have been lots of days this year where it's been too cold and/or the lakes have been frozen over, it's been a really cold winter.  There's been some days where I've been skunked or only caught a couple of fish, but it's still great to get out!

fishing user avatarhotrod reply :

What are some of the cold water techniques you guys are using? I have been one of those guys "doing other things" in the winter but it sounds like maybe I am missing out. Did go out on the Potomac Thurs. with the nice weather after Blue Cats. Caught 3, the largest being 25.5lbs.

Thanks

fishing user avatarscrutch reply :

Sure! I'd love it if it ever got to 65 degrees and all the ice melted in December up here in Indiana!

Suspending jerk baits (Spro McSticks, McRips, and LC Pointers) have been working down here with water temps in the 40's.  We did well on spoons in December and January, but lately the spoon bite has been off.

fishing user avatarJigMe reply :

winter is the prefect time for me to sit around my fire place, and read a book while drinking my blue label. I have done ice fishing 2-3 time, but didn't like it.

Cheesin' like a lil kid.  ;D. I would too if I had caught that beauty.

It is always amazing to me how fish that big can live in tiny little streams like that one. How deep was it where you caught it? Can't be more than 2ft deep in most places. 4ft max lol?...

fishing user avatarFish Chris reply :

For Largemouth's ? No. I never do a worth a $#%& from Dec. through Feb. I think I've only caught two of my DD's during that time period.

For Striper's and Sturgeon ? Heck yea' ! :) That's when it happens in my area. I still hate it (and usually avoid it) if it's raining, and / or windy. But when we are in between storms, we get some of our calmest days here. And sometimes, great Striper, and Sturgeon fishing.

One things for sure > I absolutely DESPISE snow and ice, with ever fiber of my being ! Not only would I not even consider fishing in it, I would not even consider living anywhere I had to deal with it !

I always have to laugh at the people in my area who will drive up to the Sierra's in the Winter, just to get to the snow ! Ha ! You go for it people ! See ya' !

Peace,

Fish

PS, My favorite time of the year though, for fishing, or anything else, for that matter, is by far Spring :)

fishing user avatarCAdeltaLipRipper reply :

Eh when you get on fish stacked up and the weathers nice it's great but it's my least favorite of all the seasons

Wow lol "Ive ONLY caught TWO of my DDs in the winter"

fishing user avatarbass or bass ? reply :

I enjoy it because I can actually fish during the day time. It can be quite cold in the mornings and evenings though. In summer it's just too hot to fish until night time. Of course things are a little different here in Phoenix than the rest of the country weather wise. Spring and fall are my favorite times of the year to fish here.

fishing user avatarCJ reply :

I've had some good days in the winter but I've had much better days in the spring and summer. Honestly, in the last two fishing trips, I have completely hated winter fishing. We had a big shad kill a couple weeks ago and that makes fishing very tough.

fishing user avatarcrappiekid24 reply :

I would say I love winter fishing. When the lakes ice up I bring out the short rods and auger. Winter time is ice fishing time.

fishing user avatarNick reply :

Love it.  And thanks to so many like Sam who don't, it gives me free run of the places to catch them. Just me, the eagles, mink, deer, turkey, and the smallies.  By far the best time for big fish for me: no crowds, no mosquitoes, no blazing sun. A good day is 20 smallies  over 2lbs. and often I get more and bigger. Cold, cold temps knocked us out of most of Jan. and part of Feb., so I'm raring to go this week. Advances in cold weather gear really add to the positive experience.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

As long as the water is soft and the air temp is in the high 30's or 40's I can handle it.  I don't go out on the ice though.

fishing user avatarSausageFingers23 reply :

I'd say yes but all of the water up here is covered in about a foot of ice.  My favorite times are early spring and early fall.

Fall is bittersweet though because it means the season is starting to wind down.

fishing user avatarbassman31783 reply :

I love winter fishing.

fishing user avatarsenile1 reply :

Winter is so different for each of us depending on where we are located geographically. I enjoy Winter fishing but most years the water has been hard from late December to early March. Unless I ice fish I'm not going to be fishing much in this season. We had a week of highs in the 50s to high 60s last week so I took a drive to check the lake conditions on Saturday. It looks like we need another week of the same type of temperatures because the lakes are still frozen. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen. Winter has returned this week. It would help if I had some bass-holding rivers nearby.  I can't wait for March and warmer temperatures.

fishing user avatarerau618 reply :

I LOVE winter fishing, but I cheat and have a power plant lake about 30 minutes away.  Last sunday, my partner and I caught about 14 fish over the 16" mark.  Our biggest 4 went 16.75 lbs.

It has been like this all winter. :)

fishing user avatarTin reply :

I do best when the water is under 50 degrees, love it. Just not the northern wind.

X2

My very favorite time is spring for prespawn smallies

fishing user avatarfishinflip415 reply :

I enjoy fishing in the winter. You dont get as many bites but the ones you do get are often quality. This is the time where I break out the soft swimbaits and dedicate to really working them. Also I don't mind fishing in the rain. As long as your prepared for the weather gear wise you should be good. I dnot have the privelage to be choosy about the weather when I get a chance to get out. Plus I really like that there are only the most dedicated of fisherman out during bad weather. All the Panzies stay home.

fishing user avatarSenkoman12 reply :

while i dont love i do like to icefish ;)

fishing user avatarhogrustler reply :

I love winter fishing. One reason aside from catching alot of fish the mosquitos are down and out. They are terrible here in the mid-south. Are they as bad up North as what I have heard?

fishing user avatarCCP reply :

Winter is my favorite time of the year to fish by far
