I can think of several lures I used to wear fish out on but for some reason I just quit using them. Chatterbait is one I used to catch a lot of fish on. Ive actually won some money on that bait but for whatever reason I quit throwing it. Rattle traps are another one ive won some money on and caught my personal best spot and largemouth on done even have one in my tackle bag.Torpedos, lizards, flipping tubes, and big crankbaits are just a few that come to mind.
For me it's Roboworms. I used to use Roboworms on my dropshot almost exclusively but now I use other plastics. For some reason I don't feel that the Roboworms get bit as often, or, I lose confidence in them too fast.
I've more or less gotten away from t-rig worms even though they are probably the most consistent bass lure out there, I just don't enjoy fishing them anymore.
I've stopped using hooks. My hook up ratio has suffered a bit.
I don't or have not just up and quit using a bait, what I do however is put it aside, I try to gain as much knowledge as possible on my home lake, what works in what color and when the best times are to use what I have learned, I take what I put aside with me to other bodies of water and usually it will end up working even better than what I would have thought, or at the very least hoped for, I take those baits and put them in a separate Plano box and mark it for Lake X, in turn it gives me better feedback for color choices that works during a given time of year and conditions for the lake.
Multiple times.
I quit using GYCB senkos because Yum Dingers work just as well and are much cheaper
I quit using anything made by Reaction Innovations because I found cheaper alternatives that work better, plus I don't have to explain or hide the sexual inuendo laden bags from my kids when they are on the boat

What, you don't want to explain Dirty Sanchez or Donkey Punch to them?

There's enough places in this world for kids to be exposed to unsavory things, out for a day of fishing should not be one of them. I am not Mr. Morality, I just don't feel it's needed in something like fishing.
This may sound a little weird but I may stop using something because it works. Once I've figured something out -and I'm satisfied with the results- I like to go try something else. It's a matter of curiosity, of looking for different (sometimes bigger) fish, of wanting to keep a good bait/location producing in the future, and not wanting to put too many holes in my fish period (I fish small waters and even get to recognize individuals).
As to certain baits over the long haul, yes... but that has more to do with certain lures lending themselves to certain water types than because I did well on them in the past. Nothing in my boxes are off limits.

and I would not disagree with this. I'm no prude but not everything needs to be "edgy" or "cheeky". Especially fishing

I understand this. If I'm out fishing for a day and something is working well, I'll change it after 3-4 fish. May sound goofy but I get bored with that bait and try something else. Might be the type but a different color or I may completely change tactics and go to something different. Why? I don't know.....variety
Don't remember the last time I picked up a tube or spinnerbait.
Plan on using the tube this year but probably not the spinnerbait.
senko/wacky rig fishing. Even though I'm a huge lover of Texas Rig, I cannot stand senkos/wacky rig without a valid reason. Its odd

Maybe I'm just getting old (but I don't think that's it) -Not everything has to be "EXTREME!!!" either. Attention span issues out there perhaps.
For no reason I can explain I don't buy or use lizards anymore. Tubes get seldom thrown.
Little Georges, Gay Blade, rattle traps: there is only soft bottom strewn with wood debris in the bayous I fish. If it hits the bottom, it's hung and done.
Carolina rig:. Pain in buttock to cast.
I started off throwing zoom finesse worms every single time I went on the water in some way, shape, or form. Now I don't even own a pack of them, funny how things change. I wish I still had the ignorant confidence that I used to, it's so easy to overcomplicate things once you figure out more about it.

Pretty much the same thing here. Had them on finesse shaky heads, flick shakes etc etc. Now im throwing a trick worm 90% of the time.
The only staples in the boat are tubes, grubs, Bandit 100, and a deep little N. Other baits will come and go depending on what I am feeling at the time. The problem is with all the new crap coming out all the time it is inevitable something will have to get benched because the power of the bait monkey is too strong.
Yes I have all of the sudden stopped on certain baits. Whether it be for wanting to try something different, or just finding a bait that has a higher tendancy to bring in more fish. It just happens. Pretty sure it happens to everyone at least with one bait or another
Havoc pit boss, but it wasn't because I wore them out on it. I couldn't catch anything on it.
I quit using Shad Raps after them being a staple for many years. I've recently remedied that situation.
dont really throw ribbontail worms much anymore. will probably pick one back up and try it this fall.
i throww pretty much a variety every year depending on season but just about everything i own. i give a fair share of time in the water
This happens at the end of the fishing season. I put a bait away, and forget about it until I see it again. Then I kick myself for not using it.
For several years I almost quit using plastic worms and used craws , lizards , creature baits... I dont know what I was thinking . Went back to mostly worms last year and the quantity shot way up .

This what I do. I don't have kids in the house so I have some spare cash to buy lures etc. with. I know many will believe that that monkey has me buying much tackle. I am totally addicted to collecting lures. In 115 days, I will be retiring. My plan is to use a bait till I catch at least one or maybe two on it. If I can't catch any after a couple of hours, I will go onto something new, but keep it in the rotation. This way I will actually use these lures and be happy when I catch. I plan on fishing, walking my dog and studying the bible in my retirement. I say that my hobby is collecting fishing tackle and luckily my wife doesn't mind. I plan on teaching my grandkids fishing too and giving them my equipment to remember grandpa.
I have to say the bass fishing crowd as a whole have a tendency to do this. We'll find something that works and most of the time it gets cast aside for something new. It didn't stop working, we didn't run out of them, and they didn't become too expensive to replace yet we still look for something else. It's actually kind of fascinating if you ask me. Baits I found myself doing this with in the past have been lipless crankbaits and ribbon tail worms. I started using the lipless again this year with great results and wondered why I ever put them down. Next year the ribbon tails will be making an appearance more again.
The original floating rapala
it was a fish catching machine just found other jerbaits that casted better in the wind
haven't fished a tube since i can't remember when.... and frankly i don't miss them....
Everyone should quit using any bait Roland Martin tries to peddle.....he's the king of sliding in a plug for a horrible bait so he can make a dime.....How many of you have used your helicopter lure recently? I'm sure his son Scott used it to win FLW angler of the year. I can hear it now...."Son! My son won the FLW angler of the year exclusively on the helicopter lure! Wait a minute, he also threw the Cavitron buzzbait loaded with MegaSrike!" "Scott also credits his top finishes because he used Dr. Dan's lip balm which helped him catch extra fish" "If it wasn't for Scott's Duracell Marine batteries he wouldn't have ever got his boat started which also helped him win" "Son" I'm proud of my son! (Have to admit though, Cavitron buzzbait is a good lure)

I was just thinking about this same subject literally 2 minutes ago. I saw a YouTube video where they were crushing the Bass on red crankbaits.
I got to thinking about 10-15 years ago when I used to catch tons of bass on red crawdad colored crankbaits and now I don't even have one in my boat. It's been several years since I threw one.
My only reasoning is we just have way too many choices to pick from.
Probably why I haven't thrown a spinnerbait in a few years either.

I used to throw a zoom ol monster all the time and for whatever reason I quit. Used to catch a bunch of good fish on them just started back this year and been happy with the results
I sometimes go whole seasons without throwing some baits. Examples would be ribbon tail worms, grubs, tubes certain creature baits. Then the next season I pick up that bait and use it and catch a lot of fish. I used a tube last year with phenomenal success for both smallmouth and largemouth on lakes, rivers, creeks and ponds. I think I like the challenge catching bass diffrent ways that keeps me changing. I won't ever take the almighty fish catching proven over the decades tube for granted again.
I quit using spinning reels to, does that count?
