Anyone else feel they are underrated? Out of all the baits I've thrown with regularity, I get the biggest fish consistantly on a chatterbait (maybe swim jigs tie). Rippin' it and let it fall or a slow to moderate speed retreive works best for me. I'll admit, they don't work all the time - but, I think they should probably be thrown more.
They wear me out fishing them. Same with spinnerbaits. I've caught my share of fish on them, but anymore I'd rather fish a jig or a jerkbait.
they are good little baits, but for me they catch bass in the 1-2 lb range, except in dirty water then they do a little better for me, but spinners and swim-baits do better for me.

Black and blue home made chatterbait is one of my go to big fish baits.
A lot of people fish them, or else you wouldn't see offerings from several manufacturers.
This thread used to be longer, but I will repost. How do you tie these things on? I don't know which side even with that funky loop... Also I guess you fish it more like a jig instead of a spinnerbait.
Yeah, what happened to this thread? It was much longer.

Tie on to the loop furthest from the blade.
I fish them like a spinnerbait/swim jig and sometimes I'll rip them off the bottom a few feet and let them drop.
Thanks. Also, it was posted in the general forum that they lost a days worth of posts because of technical stuff.
I fish all my chatterbaits with a different trailer. Usually with a subwoofer (swim jig favorite too) or a Trigger X flappin' grub. I took advantage of a certain online retailers black friday sale and bought some of the Frenzy Vibe chatterbaits that have a swiveling 4/0 hook. I've not fished them yet, but I suspect they will have better action than any other blade baits I've tried.

Not to mention those giant cats you catch on them out there
They don't produce well enough for me to use them more..
Just bought my first one (black and blue skirt) a few weeks ago even though I had it on my 'wish list' all season. Have thrown it a few times but no success yet, though everything I've thrown since the end of July had the same result (until recently breaking my 3 month skunk). I haven't tried it with any trailers yet, will save that for the spring.
Now that I know how to tie it on, I really like the action. The fish did not today, but that's how it goes some days. Also tried out my new buzzbaits without success. Still fun though.
I have caught plenty of fish on both the Original Chatterbait, and the Pure Poison. I have always used trailers on both, and it's always been a Baby Craw or Craw. The new Rage Blade, is an improvement to both. It deflects off stuff like lay downs and such, like a shallow-running squarebill (much better than the other two), with all the action! Once people get to try out this one, it'll be the new favorite in the bunch. There are times, where that action cannot be beat, and I plan on keeping it in my bag of tricks forever.
^^^ Inside trader!!! No fair!!
Haha. Yup.

Ok, you got me, I'll try it.
Shhhhh, the chatterbait doesnt catch fish... lets stop talking about it
Secret weapon lures or strike king bluegill skirt and a twin tail gybc hula grub doctored up with a blue spike it pen. The added weight of the yammo plastic allows you to cast it a bit better/more accurately.
Personally I've found the way a twin tail undulates and "ripples" is better than a rage craw style design or the like on a chatterbait.

How do you fish them?
Like someone stated earlier I have a list of baits that I keep in my phone and put that on there a while ago. Last weekend I was at Academy with my girlfriend and she picked one up and said this looks cool what is it. So I saw thatas a sign and bought it, funny I read a post someone made the day before and they posted some pics of fish he caught on chatter baits.
Was just curious how to fish them.
Mostly swimming like a spinnerbait, but I also don't hesitate to just kill that sucker next to good looking targets. Probably split between fish caught on it while swimming, and working like a jig on bottom. I might have to admit, that because I use a Rage Tail on the back, that's why it gets so much love on the bottom.
I have had some pretty good luck with the original chatterbait. Biggest largemouth I have caught on one is a 5-13. Biggest smallmouth a 4-2. I fish them when conditions are good for spinnerbait fishing. Pro fisherman use them quite a bit as well. They call it a bladed jig though and not a chatterbait. One thing I have noticed about fishing a chatterbait. For example If you catch 5 bass along a shoreline and then turn around fishing that shoreline again then maybe you get one or two if you fish the spinnerbait. If you were to go back down along that shoreline with the chatterbait for the second pass you will catch more fish then you would if younhad fished the spinnerbait. That is when I have found I have the best luck with a chatterbait. I think that it gives off a way different vibration then a spinnerbait and when fished behind one it will pick up fish that have already seen the spinnerbait.
At first o had to luck throwing them to the bank. But started fishing it slow near points and they seem to work better than a standard spinnerbait of the same color.
The chatterbait application has all but replaced the spinnerbait for me.

What does this mean?
In my bass club there is one guy who loves the Chatterbait. And here is why.
He was a nonboater in our Rappahannock River tournament three years ago and I we went up river to my favorite double secret spot first thing after blastoff.
He threw his Chatterbait and I tossed my buzzbait. He caught three over four pounds each. I never got a strike.
He won the tournament as a nonboater out of my boat and his three big ones caught on the Chatterbait had him end up in first place.
So do I throw the Chatterbait? Yes I do. And I suggest you consider throwing it, too.

What does this mean?
----------------------------------------
For me, it means that I choose a chatterbait (usually 3/8 oz) over a spinnerbait in almost all instances where I used a spinnerbait in the past. I use a buzzbait often but when the chop on the water is great enough I will sometimes use a spinnerbait. In other cases, especially around laydowns and docks, I will use the chatterbait.
I find if I'm near structure that I won't get hung up on, I'll throw a chatterbait. Let it sink to the bottom and rip it up 2 feet or so. Repeat until something bites!
Oh, and the Lucky Tackle Box "Frenzy Vibes" that were sent out last month are amazing. Fished with a subwoofer behind, they are ridiculous.
Stole a picture from my "favorite fishing find of the year thread"
The extra wiggle from the jig head and hook being able to articulate separate from each other makes me think chatters like this or swim jigs built in this fashion are best. No joke. I wish someone made a jig head like this.
We do fish them. We just don't tell people we fish them....
Most of the waters I fish are too clear for a chatterbait. I have had some success with them when the water does turn murky, but a colorado bladed spinnerbait out performed the chatterbait. I just bought some more chatterbaits because I will continue to fish them, but for me, the colorado blade spinnerbait is the go-to in those conditions.

One of the lakes I fish a lot the bottom is visible in upwards of 20' of water, and they love a chatterbait at times. Any time there is some wind or clouds I can usually catch a ton of fish on a bright white 3/8oz chatterbait with a chartreuse trailer. I fish it very quickly, just below the surface. The largemouth and smallmouth both slam it when it's on. It's one of those techniques that either seems to either really catch them, or they won't even look at it though.
