Frog preferences? 2024

fishing user avatarcheezledzul reply :

Do you have any suggestions for frogs? Specific brand model size? Omw to a big sale.  I've seen the hollow with streamers which is smaller than the lunkerhunt with prop legs and folded legs but don't know which one to get.

Realized today my local lake has very heavy hydrilla and beds ontop of having lillypads at the point and dropoff areas. So want to get a frog to he able to fish those areas better. Had trouble fishing the veg today but saw a lot of activity.

Or soft plastic frogs? Leaning towards hollow so they last longer and I only have offset wide gap hooks.

Are creature baits the same as soft frogs just different shapes?

If soft frogs/creatures are better what size/color and what size hooks and type of hooks. Like I said I only have worm hooks for t rigging. 2/0 and 3/0

Thanks in advance

fishing user avatarDINK WHISPERER reply :

You only need a handful so don't make it too complicated. Snag proof perfect frog and poppin phattie are the only hollow bodies I use now. Black, white and something with chartreuse are the only colors you need. For soft plastic toads I use the rage toad and now recently the yum tip toad. Both with 5/0 Owner double frog hooks with the screw on the tip. Same colors for these as well

Do the soft get shredded the same way stickbait do? Not sure how the hooks work.

Do you prefer soft or hard?

Not getting too many, maybe 1 or 2. I'm new so my arsenal is limited. Trying to get a good variety to cover all basis before going crazy on every color and brand of the same bait

fishing user avatarPickle_Power reply :

Don't get too hung up on color.  All have worked for me at different times.  I really like the soft plastic frogs.  Regular ole green pumpkin style color works fine everywhere.  I just rig them on a regular extra wide gap offset hook like I use with worms, tubes and the like.  I don't have any issues with hookups or snags in vegetation.

Did you catch some today?

fishing user avatarKsam1234 reply :

Livetarget hollow body frog is insanely soft compared to others.  I had best luck with those in either white, emerald green, black. Popping and non popping.  Caught my PB 7 pounder on a hollow body this year.

I caught 1! Well 2 but I was holding the line while pulling my phone out and it flipped itself off. It was small though. Caught it on a 4" black blue flake over a sand and rock point. Saw the most action so far today. I fished a lot slower with the yum dingers, I think that was the biggest difference.

I didnt see this till after, I bough a lunkerhunt green tea. I'm gonna go back and return it for the live target. Florescent emerald green and white or black?

Do you pop/twitch on a constant retrieve or just reel and pause. Looks like the legs require some kind of stop and go or twitch.

Depends on the water clarity but I throw the emerald green the most bc I fish pretty clear water. But you can’t go wrong with either.  The emerald looks exactly like a frog. And I do the “walk the dog” kind of action or sometimes just a couple pops and stop.  Depends on what the fish want. Always pause it though, most od

your blowups come on the pause or the first movement after the pause. I usually cast out, let it sit for a few seconds until the ripples go away or just as they are almost gone and then start working the lure back to me

Sold! Lol.

What is white good for? I know typically black lives are for merky or dim days because of the silhouette. But white is a very unnatural color.

White is just a natural color. Some bellies of frogs are white so i would throw those in that case. Or white for Shad or baitfish.  I would say 60% of the time I go with the emerald green color bc it’s white/orange yellowish on the bottom and looks like a bullfrog.  Then 30% is black for night or muddy water. Then 10% is white. So I would try the emerald green if you only wanted to buy one.

Hey DinkWhisperer- How are you liking the Yum TipToad? Was considering a ordering a few. Thanks.

fishing user avatarNorthernBasser reply :

Where I fish, most of the bass' forage is bluegill. When bluegill spend a good amount of their time under mats, they turn very dark...almost black.

A black frog mimics those bluegills the best IMO. I've been doing very well throwing black in the middle of the day without a cloud in the sky.

I like Booyah and Live Target, but don't sleep on the Scum Frog Pro Series. Excellent hookup ratio. And also has a rattle.

Booyah Popping Pad Crasher is my go to. Not overly expensive and you can buy them anywhere. For the toads, really liking the new YUM Tip Toad, much better priced than others with great action with good durability.

fishing user avatarclh121787 reply :

Spro or live target  are cheaper in the long run.booya poppi pad crasher is garbage never had one make it through a full day on the water during a good bite.. They always tear at the cup of the mouth. I bought 5 this spring and they were all torn and done over one weekend.  all brands have a life span but some are longer than others.

Man I hate it when I'm catching so many fish on my frog that it falls apart ????

Yes.  I don't use any weight, just the hook.  Probably 2/0 or 3/0.  Can't be too big or the hook shank is too long for tucking back into the body of the frog.

fishing user avatarIgotWood reply :

They all work, but my favorite frog is the Stanley Top Toad. It's a hollow-body, soft plastic frog. You get two baits in a pack for $7-8. The bait is attached to a screw lock keeper, so it falls off the hook on the strike which saves the bait. They don't get torn up very easily. And the come through the nasty stuff better than any other frog I've fished. They cast like bombs, and a very good hook-up ratio too. As mentioned previously; black, white are the only colors I use. Not much need for any others.

YUM is the best. Why pay 8 when I can pay 3. I know gar gar has salt in his but does that justify $5 for something I've been tearing up on weeds not even fish bites?

Still trying to figure out what baitfish I have. I think its bluegill and saw what i think were minnows yesterday. But it seems a lot of sunfish have a small dot by the fin

Do you guys like the ones with streamers or legs? What size? I see 3 different sizes.

They're the same price as my lunkerhunt actually.

fishing user avatarcheezledzul reply :

Found these savage gear frogs. With a reg nose and popping nose. $5 so I'll get a black and green. Theres a lighter green though.

Which nose and light or dark green? Black with white belly or all black?

The ones with the skirt legs, I assume that’s the one you are calling streamers.  They are long strands of rubber like on a spinnerbaits or jig. Go with those.  And I go with the medium size
