Hello all! i'm thinking about buying a new pair of polarized fishing glasses,I got a cheap pair now and they aren't very good, what do you all use and how much is too much to spend, and what color lense is best for all condition's. junebugmn
I use Costas. One with an amber lens for low light and the other with the standard lens for bright days. They are expensive, but when it comes to your eyes you do not need to cut corners.
Deals are always coming around the internet with the glasses ranging from about 80-140.
I bought both of mine used this way and have been very satisfied.
Yeah spending a day fishing with scratched up cheap glasses is a sure way to get a headache. I use costas with the 580 lenses in green.
I had surgery when I was young that required them to take cartilage from just above my ear. They've since discovered it was a bad place to do that because when you wear some glasses for an extended period of time, the glass rub on the scar tissue and it gets real sore. With most of the other glasses I've worn, 5-6 hours of fishing was all I could handle. It went beyond simply uncomfortable. With the 2 pair of costas I've owned, I've fished over 8 hours and they didn't bother me in the least.
I agree Costa's with 580 lenses in the color of your choice. They are all amazing.
How much is your eye sight worth ?
Using El Cheapo is as good as using nothing, even using nothing is better than using El Cheapo, you can 't over ride your eyes built in protective systems when not using anything.
I love my Oakley Shallow Blues! They were $180, but like others have stated, no price on your eye sight, and direct and reflected sunlight can be a real problem.
ive got a pair of CDM's....
with the grey lenses....... thier great, and id never givem up!
on their own, they are kinda pricey....... but unfortunately i have bad eyesight...... so i had to get mine made with my Rx in them........
made expensive glasses........ really expensive!
...yet i dont regret it one bit, worth every penny i spent on them.
I have Costa Del Mar Fathoms. I got the CR39 lenses but I would have got the 580 glass lenses if I had the money. I also have a pair of Quattro Zions with gray lenses for when I'm driving or any other activity that doesn't require me looking into water.
Mine are prescription, so they were Very expensive. My lenses are gray. My optomitrist knew I was a fisherman, so he suggested I get the polycarbonate lenses for impact resistance.
Falcon
I have had the Costa Del Mar glass lenses, and the 580 glass lenses. I couldn't tell a difference between those two, but I could tell a difference between the glass and "not glass".
I own the Costa's with the 580 copper lens. I love them..
I have a pair of costas with the cheaper of the two glass lenses (400 think). I really like the green mirror lenses. I work outside so I wear them all day with no problems. I got them for $60, about half price on steepandcheap.com which is one of those one deal at a time sites.
I've got some Rx Oakley Flak Jackets that cost around $450.00.
So far I have loved them very much.
I use Costa Del Mar Fathoms with amber lenses. They run about $120.
Oakley Hijinx with Grey polarized lenses. I didn't want to spend $145 on glasses but they were the only non wire frame glasses I could find that didn't look dumb on my fat head.
I just got a pair of Wiley X P-17s through the rebate with Abu...before that it was a pair of SK Ice from walmart.
I wear $10 glasses from wal-mart.
8-) 8-)
I used to be a big Costa user until I found Wiley-X. All my friends where Costas and I can honestly say I cannot see a difference. The Costa is way heavier due to it being glass. Another thing I noticed about them is that when I was sight fishing this Spring, the color of the fish seemed to have more "pop" with the Wiley than with Costa. I would definitely suggest taking a look at them.
Quotethe color of the fish seemed to have more "pop" with the Wiley than with Costa. .
were they the same lens color?

No money for a good pair ?
I just replaced my $10 Wal-Marts with a pair of Fish Eye's I found at Gander Mt. for $20. Has anybody had any experience with Maui Jim shades? I checked them out at Gander Mt. and really liked those. It seems everybody likes Costa Del Mar, so they must be very high quality. I really liked the Wiley-X P-17 as well.
Another costa user here. I have the man-o-war's with the removable side shields and the blue glass 400 lenses and I wouldn't trade em for anything.
I've been looking at Costa's myself at BPS and have emailed Costa, they said for bass fishing/sight fishing the Costa silver mirror 580 lens is the best option. I'm trying to decide between the Zane, which won the I-cast award and the Fathom. I'll have to see which fits the best.

No money for a good pair ?
Well, I could afford it. However, I go through like 6 cell phones a year and like wise with glasses. I know my limits
At least when I break/drop/run over my walmart glasses I'm only out 10 bucks
I've had 2 pairs of Oakley Five's the first pair my dog ate, and the second pair blew out of the boat running across the lake. Right now, i've just got some cheap $30 polarized my ex-gf got me at the beach. They are ok but no where near as good as the Oakley's. As soon as I start my new job I will have a new pair.
Love my polarized Oakley half jackets. As far as price it's about like anything else, you get what you pay for. Do Craftsmen tools work--yup just fine, but Snap-on works better.
I use these for hunting too, with my panda poodle.
im thinking of wileyx myself.
theyre allegedly good quality, they are WAY cheaper... and they float.
I thought the Wiley's felt very cheap when I inspected them at BPS (P-17s specifically). Also, I found a lot more disheartening reviews of the Wileys than the Costas. That's why I went with the Costas instead of getting the free Wileys.
My CDMs float.
Costa Del Mar Triple Tail in amber, love em!
now that i think about it i think i got wileys confused with fishgillz.
im looking into getting them... a place here has them for like 38bucks or something.
i havent payed more than 15bucks for a pair of sunglasses ever and im still tryin to talk myself into this 40dollar thing. i know better lenses better sight yadda yadda yadda.
i always scratch my glasses within the first month of getting them and then end up breaking them in 4 months or so...
so no cdm for me.

i bought a pair of renegade glasses from walmart for like 11 bucks once. the pair held up for about 2 months, so i went back and bought another pair.
they didn't make through the first week.
anyways;
broke down and picked up some "HOVEN" shades (copper lens) for $65 at sport chalet.
great shades!!! i could see everything(underwater).
Wiley's are ok. I've used them extensively at work (lots of different models). I've probably got 10 pair of them. I still use walmart glasses.
Just a thought. Take it for what it's worth
I really enjoy my Native Eyewear glasses. I've got one with amber lenses and one with grey. I prefer the amber for fishing though. However, a neat feature of the Native frames is how the lenses are interchangeable. If you like, you can carry a couple colors and switch them out as conditions change. The price tag isn't too bad either; around $120 at REI.
I wear Oakley square wire 2.0's I have 2 pair. Fathom blue and grey. I went away from plastic lenses a couple years back. Reason why is that after a couple years the plastic degraded and the frames cracked. No matter how careful you were with them. About 220.00 a pop and IMO worth every penny!
I have a pair of Oakley half jackets with the blue lenses, amber lenses, and titanium lenses. The lenses are very easy to change and these three cover all water types and all light conditions. Like everyone else says, it is worth every penny to get good eye wear and quality of the polarization is better then anything else out there.
I have a pair of Ray-ban and oakley. Ray-ban for driving, and oakley for everything else. Don't get those cheap pairs from wal-mart, you are probably doing more harm than good to your eyes...
