Which sunglasses are better? 2024

fishing user avatarrolltide reply :

I know that there are about a million posts on this already but I have narrowed it down to 3 different sunglasses. Costa Del Mar Man-O-War green mirror, Oakley Straight Jacket shallow blue, or Wiley X P-17 green mirror are probably going to be my best options for shallow water fishing. For the CDM should I get CR-39, 400, or 580? I'd also like to here about the Oakley or Wiley X. If anyone has tried all three and can compare them, that would be great.

fishing user avatarguitarkid reply :

I would buy a revo and get a free pair of Wiley-X's. you are getting two for one here. A good pair of sunglasses and a reel.

So in a way I am saying get the wiley-x's

Costa Del Mar.

fishing user avatarJeremy D. reply :

Have not tried wiley x but have tried ock's and costa's and costas will let you see things in the water you never could have seen befor1

fishing user avatarJeremy D. reply :

Also what part of bama you live in!! Roll Tide :) 8-)

fishing user avatarrolltide reply :

I live 50 miles southwest of Tuscaloosa near Demopolis. Is there a major difference between the 400 and 580 lenses?

fishing user avatardaviscw reply :

I've had the 580's. They are not worth the extra money and weight to me.

fishing user avatarmrlitetackle reply :

go costa.....

ive got them and love em....

and, if you have the xtra $$..... go for the 580's as well.....

go to a shop that has the CDM's and try the 400's first..... then put on the 580's...... you'll be a believer after that, for sure!!!

fishing user avatarburleytog reply :

I wouldn't buy the CR39 lens.  The selling point for the 400 and 580 is that they are scratch-proof.

I've got a pair of RayBans that went through two fishing seasons.  Even though I took great care to protect the lenses, they are covered in scratches.

I'll never buy anything but Costa.  My next pair will be ManOWar 580 green mirror.  I'm currently wearing ManOWar 400 ambers.

fishing user avatarClark Stewart reply :

I'll probably get slapped for this but I used to have some costa del mar wave killers. Great sunglasses but It bothered me that they'd fog up constantly. Plus there's always the fear of losing $120 sunglasses. I ended up selling those cuz I needed the cash, and bought some wal-mart special Strike Kings. I've been impressed so far. They're plastic lenses of course but i haven't scratched this pair in over a year of hard fishing. Plus at 13-15 dollars a pair I won't cry if I lose 'em, and now I can spend the extra cash on bait. Rolltide as well - Alabama Alum here!

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

I picked up a pair of P-17s at BPS yesterday. The frames felt like they were made for $10 sunglasses. They felt really, really cheap and seemed like they would break pretty easily. I ended up getting a pair of CDM Fathoms. The ManOWars were nice but I didn't like the little things on the sides. The Straight Jackets look the coolest of the 3 IMO but the CDM lenses are supposed to be better for fishing.

fishing user avatarburleytog reply :

The side shields on the MOW are removable.  I've only used them on my glasses two or three times.

I liked the Fathoms, they just didn't fit my grande cabeza.  The L/XL CDM frames are the only ones that fit my head.  The Fathom is a M/L frame.

Ahh, I gotcha. I tried on a bunch of them but the Fathoms felt the best on my head. My cabeza must not be that grande. I ended up with the Fathoms with CR-39 lenses in Vermillion. I was going to get Amber but I liked the Vermillion a little better.

Nice dude! I have the Fathoms in green mirror glass. You'll love them!

They're cheap but still UV protecting and polarized. Besides I can fish blind, can't fish with no money for tackle :)

So let me get this straight. The Costa 400s are available in CR39 AND glass versions? Then the 580 versions are just glass? Are the glass lenses in the 400 series more expensive than the CR39? The only Fathoms I saw at BPS were CR39 or 580...

Yes, most are available with either CR-39 or glass lenses.  The 580's are glass only.

Don't bet on it.  Wear a pair of the cheap glasses for a day, then a pair of quality polarized glasses.  There is a great decrease in eye fatigue.

Not all polarization is the same.  The cheap glasses have a polarized lens treatment, while the Costas, Maui Jims, etc. have the polarization built into the lens.

Optics is one area where you definitely get what you pay for.

fishing user avatarDINK WHISPERER reply :

I own both $5 Berkleys and $200+ Oakleys and Burley is right! There is no replacement for quality!

fishing user avatartnbassfisher reply :

Love my Costas!

fishing user avatarrolltide reply :

Yea, I bought a pair of cheap glasses with yellow lenses a few months ago and they're not good for the eyes during bright conditions. Should I get dark blue or light blue/green lenses? Will the green mirror costas or shallow blue oakleys protect my eyes in bright sun yet still be able to see in overcast conditions?

fishing user avatarDOVERANGLER reply :

being in the air force i get wiley x's every time i deploy they are ok i would recomend oakley half jacks with black iridium polarized lenses they are mandatory on every time out i can see through the water as if it were glass

Its the eye fatigue you need to worry about.  Cheap lenses have many imperfections in them that strain your eyes and cause premature vision problems.

Getting a good quality pair of shades with good glass lenses is key to healthy eyes.

That being said I run wiley-x's and have been very pleased.  The amber color is amazing.  I really like the padding/seal that goes around the frame.  Provides extra comfort for those long days on the lake and provides an awesome barrier to keep wind and dust out of my eyes, especially when rallying the boat wide open.

Are grey lenses less susceptible to peeling of lamination or polarization off glasses than green or blue? Are grey lenses more durable?

There isn't anything to peel on quality optics.

And to answer a question from above, the CDM amber lens is a great all-purpose lens.  Even on the brightest days the lens does a great job of blocking light transmission.

fishing user avatarskeeterman24 reply :

Costa's w/ 580 lenses.  They really make a big difference.  They really make colors stand out.  They make all colors brighter. For instance, I was doing yard work in the spring and i was raking up the dead grass then the sun came out and I put on the glasses.  After that all the brown spots really stood out.

fishing user avatarrolltide reply :

Are Oakleys straight jacket and monster dog lenses made from plastic or glass? Is Oakley or Costa del Mar more scratch resistant?

fishing user avatarburleytog reply :

I may be wrong, but I think all Oakley lenses are polycarbonate.

If scratch resistance is what you're looking for, look no further than the CDM glass lens (either the 400 or the 580).  When I bought my CDM's, the salesman pulled a pair out of the case and ran a key across the lens.  No scratches.

That attribute was what put me over the top.

I have the wave killers too and have had the same problem!  The Army issues us this stuff called op-drops for our oakleys though, and that fixed them up.
