I can't believe how they have gone through the roof in the past couple of years. Some I've seen $5.00 to $8.00.
In my case, that's a lure that stands about a 75% chance of not even making it back to the boat. But I fish them
because they are extremely effective. Fortunately for me, I already have plenty that I have accumulated over
the years, so I don't have to pay those exorbitant prices. Just a personal gripe.

Me too . I use buy jigs 12 to a card . Those jigs were better than todays jigs because they got just as many bites and were affordable .
I myself have been hoarding quality jigs over the years also. I will not have to pay that kind price for a very long time. I remember bass pro used to sell a standard jig for 88cents . And they caught fish
I bought Arkie jigs in 1982 for $0.69. Using a rate of inflation calculator, today's price should be $1.98.

Price of hooks has been going up, especially quality hooks. The other thing is silicone, that went from being 6 to 8 cents per tab to 20 cents per tab and intricate pattern skirts cost as much as 27 cents. Large companies will get a price break but a lot of the good jigs are made by smaller places that don't have the buying power of a Strike King so you see higher prices.
Welcome to our economic disaster. Higher wages and health care equals higher prices for EVERYTHING. Get used to it, cause it isn't going away and going to get worse.
I've wondered how much of this trend is real inflation (and fuel prices) or manufacturers seeing what anglers will actually pay to have the latest very high quality Japanese tackle. There are definite innovations, and quality increases in the mix there. But seeing old standard plastic plugs double in price has me wondering if this is in part what the market will bear.

Pay the premium for the good ones and go swimming when you get snagged old man. Aqua aerobics are good for the bones.

Personally I have looked for deals. I have been a fan of Santone Jigs and the last 2 years I have picked up a bunch on TW's 25 days sale at very good prices.
Hooks are definitely part of things, as smalljaw67 mentions, esp in jigs. I have lots of those old heavy ironed, mega-barbed (lol), Mustads -which were the premium hooks back then. They worked if you knew how to use a hook file, and bent the barbs down a smidgen. But the argument for quality hooks in terms of steel, sharpness, and design is hard to argue against.
This is not all that's going on in lure prices, but it's part of the equation for jigs for sure.

My Walmart carries Arkie jigs for $1.46, but they only have black and blue.

Thanks for the info. That's my color 90% of the time. Now, if only my Walmart has them. I will definitely have a look.

I can't get too worked up about artificial bait prices. The phrase "pay to play" comes to mind . . .

I guess I'm thinking more along the line of "pay through the nose"....lol.

In my line of work, I always tell my client's everything is about perspective. Depending on your perspective, your outlook can drastically change for the better. G Man says maintain "PMA" positive mental attitude and KVD says "remember, its all about the attitude." So let's flip our perspective here...now you have more reason than ever to buy MORE jigs to build a worthy cache. It is an investment, as you are protecting yourself against raising jig prices. After all, its not like your going to stop fishing or stop fishing a big bite bait like the jig.
See if that works on the wifey.
Old people think everything is too expensive. "In my day"...

Probably because we're paying for it with our own money. Not Mommy and Daddy's money....lol.

I agree, the prices are getting high. Everything is expensive that has to do with fishing. Firearms are the same way.
But take any weekend at the local lake and there are numerous fiberglass bass boats with everything probably costing 50K + and the average fishing pole/reel combo is $300.00 or more. So I guess $5.00 for a jig in perspective isn't going away but I hate to pay that price and I really hate it when I lose one.
I'm with the previous poster though, I have many packages of Arkies from walmart.

I'm guessing MOST things were cheaper in 1982. I wouldn't know personally, seeing as I wasn't born until 7 years after that haha.
Still, I can't imagine paying 8$ for a jig either. Siebert has pretty d**n good prices especially considering the hand tied quality. I've been pleasantly surprised.
Its not that old timers think everything is expensive . i bought jigs by the dozen because they didnt lighten my wallet much . A dozen jigs today will lighten my wallet a lot .

I side with this perspective. Wouldn't surprise me at all if most price increases have more to do with how much money other anglers are willing to pay for tackle
Don't forget about the price of lead...basically up 3X-8X beginning in 2004 compared to historical values
don't forget about Mike Siebert.... still making quality jigs at reasonable prices!

Problem is, Bandit CB's -for one- don't use much lead.

honestly, i ask myself that each time at checkout.... how is it that a quality jig, owner hook, custom skirt, wire tie can still be ~$3 - $4????
don't ask, don't tell.... just buy!

No, but jigs do, and that was what the subject of the thread was about ("What has happened with jig prices?")
-T9
Yeah, I know. But there's more to the story.
Have you purchased top quality hooks lately? The cost of everything has been on a upward curve for a decade. You can buy plain jigs with premium hooks like Owner, Gsmakatsu and Mustad Ulta for under a $1 and make up your own skirts or buy from Siebert who has very competitive prices.
Tungsten jigs are expensive because the cost to make is very high, you can't just melt tungsten and mold a jig head onto a hook without melting the hook.
Lead is a hazardous material today, regulatory laws have driven up the price and some states outlawed lead completely.

No doubt - raw materials is obviously just one component, but likely playing some part in the price increase. I think your theory on seeing what people will actually pay because of higher end baits in the market certainly plays into the mix, too - Like having the low cost house on the block which moves up greatest in price due to normal appreciation of the higher end neighboring houses...or a rising tide lifts all boats Once anglers got used to paying $9-$25 for a high end crankbait, Bandits jumping from $4 to $6 isn't such a big deal, because they're still cheap compared to the competition.

Some places you can buy them by the card.

Yes you can! And I do. You can call them direct and order cards of them. They make a great jig.
Get to know a good jig maker and you will get great prices.

Sieberts standard Arkie jigs are 2.80 some discounted to 2.23 and I am sure he will work with you if buying in quantity. Mustad premium hooks are 1/3rd the cost of Owner or Gamakatsu, you get what you pay for.

Yeah, and I've never had an issue with Mustad hooms, so I'm happy with what I pay for. I really like his Sniper jugs. I definitely know where I'm going when I need more or bulk.
How many are you referring to when you say "quantity?"
I buy quality casting/flipping jogs because I'm fishing around limbs, docks, pilings, etc. Those don't get hung up very much.
Footballs on a rocky bottom get hung up like every five casts. For those I use the really cheap 1/2oz Danielson football heads, find the cheapest skirts I can find in the big four (green pumpkin, Bama craw, black & blue, PBJ) and just add a trailer. A brush guard does nothing in rocks so it doesn't matter that they don't have one. With this route I can make a jig for about $2.50 a piece. That's still a lot for the cheapest stuff you can get, but after a day of losing a bunch of pretty tungsten ones it's not that bad.

PM or call Siebert and ask him what his price breaks are.
Tom
Mustad hooks are half the price of a Gammy or an Owner and neither are twice the hook as a Mustad. I would say the higher end hooks are sharper, a little, but less durable.
Price inflation is due to things that have been mentioned, hooks, lead, and silicone. Don't forget packaging, labels, labor, and all around overhead. The cost to melt the lead (electricity or gas) is much more than it was 20 years ago. Most of your cheaper yet great jigs cut cost by not show casing their product as much and sell them on cards or in just a simple plastic bag.
Shoot give me a old timey jig & file & I can sharpen those hooks up no problem. The best part is, they catch fish just as good as my tungsten jigs do. I won't lie though.. love me some jigs with owner hooks.

Terry still perfers taking orders over the phone & still builds each jig by hand.
The Trailer Hitch Jig features a screw-lock which holds plastics nice &firm.
Comparing jigs prices there is a difference between plain undressed jigs and jigs with skirts.
Sieberts site has several plain jig style between $1.00 to $1.95 with price breaks at 5 or more.
GYCB sells plain jigs with premium hooks Gamakatsu or Owner hooks for under $1.00 each in quantity of 4 or 5 depending on jig weight.
I don't have skin in this game because make my jigs. With the prices available today from GYCB, Siebert and Oldham's gives everyone the option to buy premium jigs at nearly cost to make them when you consider buying all the needed equipment and materials.
