Thought this might be a fun. What is your first bait you throw when you get on a lake or pond and what colors do you like the best?
Lipless crankbait
Jig (Black w/Blue)
Whatever is tied onto the first rod I pick up.
It depends on the lake, time of day, water color, weather, etc...
During the summer, on a calm morning I always start off with a Chugbug or Jitterbug.
Texas Rig,
1/4 oz bullet weight
3/0 straight shank round bend
Bassassin Bang Series 7.5" Tapout Black Blue Tail
Rage Tail Recon Falcon Lake Craw
At Daylight:
Lime Frog colored Rapala Skitterpop
Any other time:
Weightless texas rigged Watermelon Red Trick Worm
during spawn..usually a jig/craw
late spring thru fall-morning a topwater, usually a buzzbait evening a lipless crank if alot of shad around shoreline or a fat ika if not
weightless watermelon or junebug trick worm

Ditto (unless I'm feeling lazy and then it's whatever I already have tied on)
Depending on where I am, it's usually a Texas rigged Zoom Fat Albert on a 2/0 Gamakatsu Offset Shank hook with around a 3/16-3/8oz tungsten bullet weight.
1/2oz Bluegill or shad spinner bait,
Depends on time of year, but 90% of the time its gonna be a fluke, matched to the water, i like pearl white in the lakes with shad and i like watermelon red in lakes without.I can usually figure out where they are with the fluke, and if they arnt chasing it down to nail it i will switch it up. Slow when its cold and about as fast as i can work it when they are feeding in the shallows, if you wanna see some acrobatics work a fluke on top as fast as you can over submerged grass.
A jig. Size and color depend on the conditions on the water.
Usually a spinnerbait, green/white with willow leaf blades. Sometimes I start with a squarebill crank or a topwater frog depending on times of day/conditions.
Weightless Zoom 5" Super Fluke Baby Bass 4/0 EWG Hook
White spinnerbait or buzzbait at sunup, soft plastics later in the day. Conditions dictate color & type.
My topwater BPS. XPS TOPNOCKER COLOR #25 chartreuse. Loaded with bass scent as far as I can cast it.
a lot of variables to the question, but i'd say since i usually hit the water before the sun is up it's probably a buzzbait and/or popper
It depends on a lot of things, but more times then not, I always have these 4 tied on from the beginning:
-jerkbait
-spinnerbait
-lipless crankbait
-weightless 5" Zoom fluke w/ 3/0 EWG hook.
Depends on a lot. I rarely start with the same unless I'm kayakin for fun not fishing. If the wife and I are kayaking I just bring a little dock demon pole my son wanted and tie on a fake salamander and troll with it until something destroys it and I reel it in. Other than that I think about it. But something about a fake pumpkin colored lizard trolling around at kayak speed that makes em go nuts.
Wow lots of difference, i knew it would be because different conditions etc.., just thought it would be interesting to see what people preferred!
Pretty broad question there. It depends on the time of the year, time of the day, water color, water temp etc. Most of the time, I'll start off with some type of moving bait and if I don't get bit pretty soon, I'll slow down with a jig or soft plastic.
More often than not, it's a jig for me.
Nothing better than a early morning bass blowing up on a top water lure!
When I go fishing I'm on the water about the time the roosters are crowing, so I almost always begin with a topwater or floating jerkbait. I don't carry a lot of colors. Silver/black back is one of my favorites.
Considering the obvious what everyone has already said..
If we start out shallow its always a Scum Frog.
If we start deep usually it's a spook, spinnerbait, crank.

Depends on the day. I tend to vary it because I like to experiment with new stuff when I fun fish.
When in tournaments I tend to go with the Sexy Dawg for at least 20-30 minutes on most occasions.

A mix of both of these.
I throw my ritual of baits starting off with a very long topwater to scent the water so the fish know who's your daddy.
Then I switch lure types sizes and colors till I get action.
I can't tell you the order I do it in or I would, you know what....try picking a few different lures in a pecking order.
Trust me it beats casting over and over for nothing. Why do we have a tackle box full of different lures, sizes and colors and some cast one lure and catch nothing. The some go home a beaten tired fisherman. Think about it. Search for the pattern and presentation that's the fun of fishing. When the bite slows down change lure size first. If still nothing change color. Think about the different presentations too. Get on top of your game skill wise. Then it's a matter of how many fish will I catch today. Failure isn't an option. Stay motivated and focused.
Make soft casts do not slam the water with your lure like it's a rock.
Always a spinnerbait, I choose the type of blades and color based on the conditions. i always want to start with a reaction style bait and then if that doesn't work I'll switch to a more subtle presentation such as a wacky worm or jig
Topwater(frog/spook/popper) I am always looking for the big mamma's early in the morning...

Green Pumkin Zoom Trick Worm on a split shot rig.
White Zoom Fluke
Im amazed how many guys just go strait to finesse tactics which I assume if they catch fish, which it likely does you stick with it? Miles well not own anything but a spinning rod.
Theres a couple of rods that never leave my deck, which I grab depends on cover. One is a spinnerbait rod, the other a jig rod, ones a shakey/dropshot rod, one is a crankbait rod. Ive got a light swimbait rod, a jerkbait rod. Ive got enough rods to handle like 10 different tactics at a moments notice. Sometimes that can be my downfall as its too easy to change.
All depends on time, day, history of the lake. Some bodies of water I know I can kill em on top, some I dont even bother.
Weightless black 4 in Senko t-rigged with a 1/0 gammy
I will start with whatever the day calls for. however, I usually always start with a search bait of some kind. Usually a lipless bait, buzz bait, or crankbait.
Jim
Really depends on the time of the year and water temp.
Water temp 45 - 53: Dynamic Lures J spec Jerkbait or Travado Jerkbait in Ghost Fish, or Holofoil Gold
Water temp 54 - 60: 1/4 Ounce Terminator Super Stainless Spinnerbait, Colorado Willow gold blades, gold shiner skirt, or 1/4 ounce terminator super stainless Double Willow Leaf, Nickel/Gold with a chartreuse shad skirt
Water temp 61 and above: Cavitron 1/4 and 3/8 ounce buzzbait, gold blade with ghost shad skirt, Rage Shad Green Pumpkin/Chartreuse, or Rapala Skitterpop #7 Lime Frog
Senko wacky, followed by t-rig
