Tungsten Weights 2025

fishing user avatarPeter E. reply :

So are they worth the money and do they make that much of a difference?

fishing user avatardaviscw reply :

I was wondering that too...

fishing user avatarTruflShufl reply :

Me too.  :-/

fishing user avatarAKFerzy7 reply :

depends on what you what them to do. i dont use tungsten unless fishing a tournament if i had more money to use them all the time i would. whenever you are punching matted grass they are invaluable.

fishing user avatarGatorbassman reply :

I am slowly building my supply of Tungsten weights. I love them. The feel that I get with them is unbelievable.

fishing user avatarburleytog reply :

Yes.  Using tungsten is like wiping your butt with silk.

fishing user avatarrfrazier reply :

Long as you're ok with your boater giving you crap for fishing "rich man weights"!

fishing user avatarVyron reply :

for me it doesnt worth the extra price

i use braid line for the extra sensitivity

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

Its personal preference  ;)

fishing user avatarGrey Wolf reply :

If you can afford them , they are the real deal.

fishing user avatarJake. reply :

I think they are.

fishing user avatarEastTexasBassin reply :

I bought a few and they were ok.

I actually caught my first 10 pounder while using one but I doubt the weight had anything to do with it.

The only real difference I noticed was that I was MUCH more ticked off when I hung up and couldn't get it back.

fishing user avatarDancesWithSquirrels reply :

What is it that tungsten is supposed to do for you from a fishing techinique perspective?   I can see the lead vs non-lead toxicity issue for choosing between them.  But it seems like if you have 1/2 oz of weight on your rig it wouldn't make any real difference what the weight is made of unless there was a huge difference in the density of the two materials.  And considering the cost difference I would not want to be losing the more expensive tungsten weights.  And I am good at losing terminal tackle.

What are the supposed advantages of tungsten?

fishing user avatarflechero reply :

Tungsten makes a big difference, I think.  Will it increase your catch?  Maybe, depends on you.

I can fish a lighter weight, deeper.  The density is such that it send vibrations up the line much stronger than lead, giving you a much clearer picture of what you are fishing through or over, in other words if you fish mono, you'll feel a lot more with a tungsten weight.  The physical size is smaller so there is less weight in the way. (of rocks, snags and hooksets)

As stated above, if they fit your budget, they are great...  until I lose my job, I'll keep buying them.  (and when I think that's close, I'll stock up before it happens!  ;D )

fishing user avatarAlpster reply :

I like the Tungsten bullet weights for more weight in a compact size. This is the biggest advantage in my opinion.

fishing user avatarfishdude reply :

I spend some time shopping and found them too expenive too. Ebay offered me a good deal though. Magic weights, you should all check it out. Although I'm not happy upgrading to tungsten, feel like i've sold out. Talk to me next month and I'll be back to my farmer lead!

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Welcome aboard!

8-)

fishing user avataralger319 reply :

i prefer tungsten for it smaller size to fit baits, and extra sensitivity since i don't use braid on everything. it is personal preference but i'll spend some extra money on what i believe will help me catch more fish.

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

I like them but they are expensive.  I think the main benifit to using them is the obviously the size.

fishing user avatarTin reply :

I never thought I would say it but I'am noticing a difference, I feel things I have not before. So how, they are more sensitive. :-/

fishing user avatargrimlin reply :

Smaller profile and denser metal.I love them when i can afford them.

The biggest argument is rather you can feel what's on the bottom better than lead.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

I personally do not feel any difference between lead & tungsten; every thing y'all describe as what y'all are feeling with tungsten I feel with lead. I not sure if it's just me or what but other than overall size of the weight I don't see or feel a difference.

fishing user avatarTpayneful reply :

I tried tungsten last year and was sold!  In the places that I fish, brush piles, beaver huts, laydowns, rock piles and around lily pads I think the denser tungsten weight transmits the bottom content and cover type better.  If I was fishing in Florida in Hydrilla clogged lakes it might not be that much of an advantage because the aquatic vegetation is so soft.  Because it is so hard, it will come out of a fishes mouth on hookset and not get in the way of hook penetration.  A bass can actually bitedown and hold a lead weight.  I can afford them so they are in my box!

fishing user avatarthetr20one reply :

Made the switch a couple years ago and not goin back. pricey yes but they are worth it. smaller, louder and more sensitive. Kinda like hitting a nail with a hammer (tungsten) vs hitting a nail with a plastic mallet (lead)!

fishing user avatarSPAZ reply :

Yes, tungsten is expensive but I prefer the more compact profile.  To me, that itself is worth it.

fishing user avatarTruflShufl reply :

Well I ordered a 10 pack so we'll see what happens at my tourney in a couple weeks  8-)

fishing user avatarfishin_fool reply :

Once you use them you cant go back to lead

fishing user avatarthetr20one reply :

Also, I am no treehugger but they are alot more environmentally sound. Sometimes I wonder when I lose a jig or worm if the lake was drained and I walked around how many baits would I find? The exception for me is tube jigheads I like to fish an open hook and a tungsten weight would be wasted inside a tube!

fishing user avatarPeter E. reply :

TGhanks for all the replies fellas but one more question though do they penetrate cover better?

fishing user avatarBig-O reply :

Three important reasons why I like tungsten weights over lead. 1) In weight size - advantage tungsten.  2) For holding color if painted (for finicky clear water fish) - advantage tungsten. 3) The most important reason is that since they are much more expensive, I am retying much more often to avoid line breaks which loses weight, hook and fish - BIG advantage tungsten. This reason alone has made me take the time that to do what I have failed to do often enough. I have lost far too many fish over the last 40 years for that very reason. I consider tungsten weights a extremely inexpensive considering the valuable lesson learned.   ;)

fishing user avatarBig-O reply :

And of course they penetrate cover better, they are smaller.

Now that the lesson has been learned it would seem to be a good idea to apply that lesson to the use of lead.  Since no matter how careful you are you will still lose stuff once in a while.  It is still advantage lead when it comes to cost of lost weights.
