To my old original Cordell big-o which I hung up and lost around 40+ years ago.

In many years of fishing from the bank, enough to rival Arlington cemetery, and in particular one buzz bait that I have only seen that once but that was a great design.

fishing user avatarCody21w reply :

If you're not fishing from the bank, PLEASE get yourself a lure retriever. It will easily pay for itself and prevent losing your favorite beat up lure.

To my Jackall Squad Minnow who spent more time in a box shipping from Japan than on the water.

Had a spinner bait I put up in a tree up in Minnesota.  Nothing really special about other than it had "the mojo"  Caught a ton of fish with it.  I pay my respects every couple of years when I go up there.  Still hanging there.

I popped my leader knot on a custom painted crappie colored Duo Realis Spinbait 80 that would flat out kill them on a local lake of mine. I was heartbroken to see it plop in the drink. I haven't been able to find one like it since. :(

AHHHHH<.. finally an ode to the lures famous or not that have gone down the other path,....

To the greatly loved and lost, we dearly salute you. Your value may have been unmeasurable, but nonetheless,...regarded, endeared, and, yes even loved. Your undying dedication and devotion to work as we decided, was not only appreciated, but etched in our memories and thoughts. We greatly miss, and fear your likes will never be matched, as we had such a bond that cant just be broken by absence, as memory, and time spent together.  will truly quell any replacement,....... the experiences and successes we endured solidify our time together, and can only now bring sorrow, and dismay, as your departure is so evident.

As you pass on to another chapter of your existence,.. hung in that tree, stolen by that cow of a bass, or snagged in that brushpile. We can only reflect, and rely on our memories, to recall such joyous of times. And we ask the good lord to provide us a easy transition, a sombre path, and peaceful easement towards the next chapter of life. We salute you, oh lost and endeared tackle,... may your new path be unhindered, by casts to emergent rip rap, undaunted with strikes from toothy pike, and let lay instead of being crushed by smallmouths.

Yea,... tho we may walk, nay run! to our nearest bass pro for replacement. You are in our thoughts, our minds, and our prayers,....

that they still stock your kind!,.....lol

Nicely Done hamma ~ Really Enjoyed that one.

However my particular reaction to losing a favorite bait is rourinely far less eloquent.

I'm sure all of us have lost favorite baits - especially some that are no longer made and thus not readily replaceable (short of paying collector prices on eBay). I also sorta "bond" with some baits, especially those that go over the century mark in number of bass caught - BUT, when those baits eventually go KIA, I know that they fought the good fight, and brought in enough bass to more than pay for themselves, and pass on to the Valhalla of bass baits with their head held high...

Then, there are the baits that have one shot at glory, and are lost too soon. The 3/4 oz Red Eye Shad in the photo below was removed from the wrapper, tied on the rod, caught a 5-pound bass on the first cast, and then was hung on a stump on the second cast and lost (fishing from the bank).  RIP RES - I hardly knew ya...

"Only The Good Die Young"

Channeling my inner Billy Joel right there - 1977 was a good year.

And loosing discontinued baits isn't even remotely funny.

In this case we did use a lure retriever, but something weird happened and my line broke while trying to bump the lure free. Must have been around a sharp stick or something, I'm still not sure what happened.

I've gotten my Deps 250 unstuck from about 6 or 8 logs with a good lure retriever, my Hudds have never not come off a hangup except for this time... Lure retrievers are amazing!

First time I ever fished a chatterbait it was an original D&M Piranha, and it was to that date the most expensive lure I had ever bought.  LIterally the second cast from shore, got hung up on some deep rocks, snap, gone.  It took me a while to recover from that one.

fishing user avatarBig Bait Fishing reply :

throwing sinking swimbaits is always a risk , sometimes you have to pay to play , why do you think most guys want a floating swimbait !

fishing user avatarGoose52 reply :

OK - here's another one. This Deep Little N was well over 100 bass caught - probably nothing bigger than 3 pounds caught on it - just a soldier that "went over the top" whenever called. I was cranking it across some known man-made fish structures and it probably got wedged between some of the pvc pipes that made up the structure. Not recoverable by a plug knocker.

RIP DLN...

Those spybaits attract lots of pike too ?. Do crappie ever have that minnow shape that the spinbait 80 has? Love those spybaits!

really too soon ?

I lost 2 of LC jerkbait last week on seperate trip one of them just open the package got a shot bite and then ... RIP.

fishing user avatarbchase44 reply :

A brand new Red Eye Shad, lost under a bridge, probably 5th cast or so.

Another lipless crankbait Cotton Cordell, that previous trip caught 2 decent bass, Lost on a stump.

About 2 packs of Roboworms and various pricey hooks.. Lost to the depths. And the only 4 tungsten drop-shot weights I've bought are with them.

My favorite joined shad-rap.. another stump.

Ned rig holocaust, I've lost count.

I cannot go further..

A Rogers Big Jim that I picked up at an antique store caught more   bass for me   , than any crankbait I ever had . I was parallel  casting a bank and lost high in a tree . That lure had "it" .

Second from bottom .  You can see the lure in the mouth of these three bass but it caught many more .

My dumbest lost lure?  Tying on a new custom made hair jig.  Just got it .......had never cast it.......cut the tag end off and drop it over the side.  See where this is going?  Yep.......cut the main line.  *Bloop*

I was sad

Just lost my favorite spinnerbait yesterday. Too many times having to bend it back in shape after a fish and it broke. Saved the blades though, so they will live on.

fishing user avatarGoose52 reply :

OK - here's another one. You know the player that sits on the bench for years, then the coach finally sends him into the game, he makes a couple good plays, then gets his knee thrashed - career over. Sorta like the ultralight MirrOlure in the red circle below. I bought all those MirrOlures in 1967 or prior. The ultralight baits had probably never even caught a fish back then. They "sat on the bench" for about 45 years and then I put one of them "into the game." Tied it to the 4 lb. mono on my ultralight rod, caught 2 bluegill and 2 bass with it, then hung it on something underwater at the end of a long cast (fishing from the bank) and had to break off.  If I had been really young, like in my 30s or 40s, I guess I would have gone swimming for it. BUT, since I was nearly 60, I decided to let it go - it finally got off the bench, and had an honorable departure to the deep - lost in action. April 28, 2011.

RIP micro MirrOlure...

Get some terminators and you won't have to worry about that. Price is almost triple the cost of regular spinners but worth it.

My favorite Spook, for most of the last decade, was a Super Spook Jr that was one of the few I've owned that would walk easily with a feathered treble on the back. It was one of those 'one in a hundred' lures that just seemed to out catch other identical ones I have.  I was fishing the downwind side of a cut between two islands and had just released my second brute in five minutes.  In my haste to get that puppy back out there, I never checked my line. The knot popped just as I released and that awesome lure sailed over the tree line of the island never to be seen.  I even offered a reward for anyone finding and returning it.
