Was just wondering what tackle shops people prefer for lures, rods reels etc.
I have a Gander mtn near me but it never advertises so I have to drive 30mi's just to see what's up. I like the layout though and they seem to be know a fair amount. I have a Dick''s also but it just seems lame to me. They only put low end stuff on sale and only have a tiny bit in their ads. The closest BPS is 200mi's away but I have been once and loved it as well. If someone mentions one not listed a few times I will add it to the poll.
I voted for BPS actually I like Cabelas and BPS the same
Sorry mud.
I should have mentioned that I set the post up so people can vote for more than one.
Thats cool it's just fishing not surgery DONT SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF
I like BPS the best but will go to Gander Mountain as well.
BPS because it is so close and has a huge selection plus 10% off helps. I also like local shops because they seem to carry more of the odd ball stuff.
I like Cabela's the best, but probably because it's the closest to me
BPS is another 20 mins past Cabela's, and i like it just as well, so i voted for both.

I mostly have to order things online because the nearest BPS ias about 200 miles away. When I do order it's almost always from BPS even though their customer service isn't quite as good as cabelas. I have a dicks sporting goods about 10 minutes from here and thats where I get all my lures and soft plastics but when I buy rods and reels it's always by mail.
I sometimes order online, but for the most part I like my local takle shop.
They know me by name and the service is top rate. They are very well stocked, but if they dont have it they'll order it and will have it in a couple days at no extra charge.Yea,they are a little pricey on some things but well worth it in the long run, cause man they take care of me .And I like helping out the local(little) guy.
just my .02
i voted gander mtn because all the local bait shops are all focused on sltwater and as far as bps an cabelas there isnt one within two hours but gander mtn is only half an hour away an they have a great selection
Most of the my stuff i buy from www.ichibantackle.com and www.plat.co.jp
I do also buy stuff from bassproshop.
I like both Cabela's and Northern Bass Supply(northernbass.com) since I order most of my stuff via the internet.
Nearest BPS is about an hour and a half away in Charlotte. Love to go and when Dad comes down we head that way just to hang out. I could spend an entire day in there. Have never been to a Cabella's nor Gander Mtn.
Most of my shopping is done on-line and I like BPS and Cabella's, in that order. The BPS brands seem to be really good. Just outfitted my bullet, screw on, jig head and drop shot weights (bait monkey really got to me the other day) with all BPS brand and they are excellent - (25) 1/4 oz jig heads for $2.99 is hard to beat.
The Wal-mart here (Durham off 15-501) is really good, but, I think that's because of the two guys that run it keep it stocked really well and know there stuff.

I like BPS, but I live on the Northwest suburbs of Atlanta, and it's an hour+ to get there. I found out a small store in Jasper (a little closer to me) sells tons of great stuff - about 75% of what BPS has & the customer service is really good, so I spend the $$ a little closer to home.
My nearest BPS is an hour away but I still like them the best. I order a lot online from them and I love when I can make it to the store. BPS gets my vote for selection and the giant fish tank!
I have a BPS 45 minutes to an hour from me(depending on traffic)... I buy most of my stuff there. The problem I find is that my BPS doesn't always have some of the catalog items or the popular items are sold out. I find that I buy a lot more from their website now!
BPS hands down over Academy.
BPS is good but I love the local tackleshop we have around here, they always have local reports on what's biting where and they carry custom stuff.
great replies,
Unfortunately it is getting to the point with $2.50 per gallon of gas I even have to think about it before I make the 45mi( or whatever it is) round trip to Gander mountain. At 15 miles to a gallon its 7 bucks just to visit. That will just about pay shipping to my door. Nothing like looking in person though. On the other hand the bait monkey bites harder in person!
there is a local shop that i go to that is called Angler's Choice. i like them because they have lots of small brands that other people don't have like KGM custom baits, Clearwater, Sniper, Crooked Creek, McCoy Fishing Line, etc. and they also have many of the more popular componies like Yamamoto. oh, and the owners are really nice!
Academy is the best but then I get a 25% discount
BP is about 2 hours away. It's a new store. The only time I have been to a BP is the one in Springfield, Missouri. 12 years ago on my honeymoon. We only had about an half an hour to spend. Four hours later I was still looking. Let me tell you, I thought it was a good way to start the honeymoon. Well, not for her. Boy! you talk about mad!
And if you are thinking "Is he still married to her?" The answer to that thought. "NO!"
We have a Sportsman's Warehouse 3 miles down the road. I really like it. I think they have alot of bait, rods and reels. They do need to advertise better.
Dicks is about 2 miles down the road at the mall. My opinion is that they stink. There fishing selection is terrible. They need to stick to selling there fancy running clothes and over price bicycles and get out of hunting and fishing.
My opinion.
I shop on the internet and always use *** them Cabela's
My favorite tackle shop is BPS. They always have what I want/need. Gander Mountain is #2, because they don't have the selection that BPS has. I like Cabelas, but they are too far away.
I'd like to buy more tackle from the local bait shop but they only sell very basic tackle (hooks, sinkers, crawler harnesses).
Falcon
My favorite is Bass Pro Shops, but it's 2 hours awau so I don't get to it but a 1/2 dozen times a year. That should change soon though as they are building a new one in Buffalo, which will be only about a 45 min drive for me. I also live closer (about 40 mins.) to a Gander Mtn. and Dicks. I like both of those store alot too. Very few.........and now that I think of it NO local mom and pop tackle shops left around here, except for the poorly run, horribly stocked shops on the local lakes. About all they have are 30 year old Rapala's collecting dust cause they want $15 a pop for them and live bait.
I voted Bass Pro Shops, I do however get alot of stuff from some tackle shops such as ISG, Smitys Bait, Gopher Tackle and PS fishing.
Definitely Bass Pro Shops and being that its only about 5 minutes away I'm in there at least once a week.
LOL!
Grid I can see where you might not have got that one off to a good start. BPS on your Honeymoon? LOL
I do ( no pun intended ) some crazy things but I don't think I would even try that one!
ps there is a sportsman's up in Wisconsin near where my daughter lives and it was a nice set-up as well but almost 3 hrs away
I go local from the 2 decent shops we have here as much as possible. When I need certain stuff, I go to Bass Pro that is an hour away.Everything else i get from *** online.
Have two academys within an hour but they dont have much fishing stuff.
I like BPS for selection and local baitshops for detailed fishing information.
I like Cabelas for online ordering. But there is an Academy in Little Rock that I would occasinally stop by when my mom went down there for chemo treatments. You talkin about sale bins.....
I like Dick's Sporting Goods, but only because I have an unlimited amount of $10 of a $25 purchase coupons...it makes buying Lucky Crafts a little easier on the wallet!
If anyone wants the coupon, send me a pm with your email and I'll email you the .pdf file.

I chose BPS, because I am 10 minutes away. I also like Gateway Outfitters. They offer some hard to find stuff in hard to find colors.
Well considering there isnt a BPS within 8hrs of where I live. I use a great local tackle shop that does orders from everywhere has the same prices as BPS. They have exactly what I want and know me by name. They will ship just about anywhere and are only 40 minutes away from me. A great tackle shop Northern Bass Supply. Give em a look.
i voted for my local shop, its called the tackle box, they sell good stuff and the owner is very knowlegable. sorry if thats considered advertising, i didnt mean to make it sound like that.
I like BPS and Cabela's about equally. Gander Mountian is down on the list. Never seen an Academy. Dick's isn't even on the list. They are not a tackle shop, in my opinion, they're a sporting goods store.
I probably do more online business with Cabela's, with BPS being a close second. I buy more in-store at BPS because of location. With the new Cabela's opening in a couple of weeks about 5 miles away from the BPS at ST CHarles, Mo, this will change. The new Cabela's looks to be at least twice the size of the BPS. Can't wait. We're planning to be there for the opening weekend.
Cheers,
GK
Cabela's
BPS
Reeds Family Outdoor Outfitters
here where i live there are lots of good local shops, but i still get a lot of stuff like rods from BPS, i would have to say a tie between both.
Hey Ghoti did you say a Cabelas is opening right by BPS in St Charles?
North-Westish corner near the river right?
I've only been down to BPS once as it is a 2.5 hr drive for me. With BPS and Cabelas though I might have to make it again.
I voted for BPS but I do like Cabela's equally.
I voted BPS and a local shop.
