I have been using snap to change out lure because it’s EZ but I’ve had them come unsnapped or break off. I fish for Bass with hollow belly for a lot and Texas ringed plactis, I’ll have a good bite but when I set the all there is left is starhight end of the line what would be? I fish in north eastern Wisconsin we do have snapping turtles could they snap it right off?
I would NOT use a snap for hollow frogs and Texas rigs. There's too much shock applied at the hookset. Anything that comes with a split ring to tie to, I replace the ring with a Duo Lock snap.
What kind of snaps are you using? Cheap ones can open or break easily under a load where better quality ones like cross lock models don’t.
I used to be a crusader against the use of clips because I lost a good fish on a speed clip once. Now I use a good quality snap for my treble lures on one combo. That's because I start out with a topwater, sometimes change the topwater, then end up throwing a lipless crank. I just don't want to retie that much unless it's because I'm catching fish. It's getting harder for me to see the knot I'm tying.
I use VMC crankbait snaps for treble hook baits. I love em. They’ll occasionally hinder the action of certain baits, but I find that problem being few and far between
But I tie everything else. ESPECIALLY frogs. I’ve seen guys snap 40lb braid on a hookset frog fishing. That’s just too much force for any sort of snap.
It doesnt take long to tie a good knot and the line should be inspected and retied often anyways . Learn the Palomar or trilene knot .
There are premium high quality snaps and inexpensive poor quality snaps.
I use Berkley cross lock snaps and Owner Hyper Weld snaps for crankbaits and structure spoons, tie direct to hooks, spinnerbaits top water lures and nearly everything else.
Tom
Try the Mustad Fastach clips. Easy to swap lures and they're strong
Over the years I have gone back and forth between snaps and tying directly to the line. Now I only use snaps on baits with treble hooks on them, everything else gets tied directly on. As stated earlier the trick is to find quality snaps.
What’s a good size snap for walking baits like a spook
Are u saying higher price or higher lbs. test.
Many thought on what’s biting off the whole wieght and lure
Any single hook bait=no thank you on snaps.
Anything with treble hooks=good to go on snaps.
Another vote for VMC Crankbait snaps. Size 1 for big topwaters and cranks. Size 0 for mid-size topwaters, cranks, and jerkbaits.
Welcome aboard, Darrell!
My favorite are Norman Speed clips...but they're an acquired taste,
just ask @J Francho ... anyhow, there's a trick to them that makes
them super easy to get on and off.
However, for sake of peace on the forum, go with a good duo lock.
I also use these and have no problems with 'em.

Are you saying the line itself snaps sometimes? For frog fishing, you should use braid if possible.
And pike can definitely be the culprit if you're getting bit off.
I’m like everyone else. I have one rod with a snap. I can use it to swap between squarebills, Rat-L-Traps and Whopper Plopper.
I been using these pline for a year now their my favorite I used to use the kvd snaps but they catch grass.

Definitely an acquired taste, small round loop? No action.

As WRB says, use good quality snaps on crankbaits.
Do not use snaps on plastics or on spinnerbaits or buzzbaits, unless you use the yellow garden tractor fuel line cut into 1/8 inch sections and put over the front of the spinnerbaits/buzzbaits. You can then snap the snap between the yellow fuel line and the front of the bait.
Was taught this by an old pro at a Bassmaster University class many years ago, and it works.
If you ever fish a tournament you will need snaps for your crankbaits, spinnerbaits and buzzbaits to change them out faster than taking the time to tie them on your line.
Also, you can use a safety pin to keep your snaps so you can find them easily in your tackle box and then remove one as needed with no problem. Another pro's trick. Just open the safety pin and put a bunch on it then close the safety pin. You can use any size safety pin you want.
Have fun experimenting.

Fixed that for you!

Interesting trick, I use a snap on my spinnerbait/chatterbait rod so that I can switch between those lures frequently. I purposely buy closed loop spinnerbaits for that reason.
But I'd like to try some of the open loop spinnerbaits. How do you get the tube on both sides of the open loop?

I used to use Normans until I decided I didn't actually hate myself. Now I use good snaps on Cranks. Nothing else

United we stand. Against Norman Slow-You-Down Clips!

I don't know how to resize my iPhone photos so if you will PM me your email address I can send a photo to you.
I like Hank Parker's spinnerbaits with the closed loop.
Thanks.
I've been using cheap chinese ebay snaps for years and only had one ever open up on me, and it's probably because I didn't have it clipped closed.. I use them on all my rigs except my Ned rig rod which I tie direct on.

Use the direct link.
I tie everything, then retie pretty often. only use snaps when trolling for crappie and that's not very often.
Though, I'd bet your break offs are pike.

A simple trick puts the speed in Speed Clips. You can do it, John!
Tell you what, next time I'm in The Rochester area I'll look you up.
We can gorge on some of those awesome hot dogs at your family
restaurant, and I can show you how fast the clips can work .
I'm a big fan of snaps. I've never had a knot break off with a fish before. Then again, I've never caught many fish. Lol. Always use the DuoLock snaps.

I use the protective tubing that is initially found on spinnerbait hooks when you first purchase them.

This kind. Reason I like this kind is you can still feed the snap thru the line tie of a regular size Pop R. Some of the snap designs you can't. The snap helps the popper walk a little. It gives a more erratic forward motion.

I honestly can't decide if I think this is genius or dumb. I'm tending towards genius!

Thanks, I think. I bank fish and can do miles of walking from lagoon to lagoon so I bring only one rod with me. Between that, my soon to be senior citizen eyesight, and the fact that I swap baits quicker than swingers swap partners I don't want to spend my time tying off lures every X number of minutes.
Using the tubing works. It doesn't impede the action of spinnerbaits or buzzbaits and the snap won't slide down the lure and foul the line.

Now that looks seriously good ... I'm hungry now.
Deep fried taters mmmhmmm

Yeah. I noticed that...will have to bring extra heart meds with me, LOL.
Never used snaps and never will. I like the idea of cutting off some line at the lure when changing baits.

Thanks everyone for there thoughts and ideas on snaps vs tie on

Good point.
I will admit to having tried some snaps, but honestly, re-tying was faster than fumbling with "speed clips." I still use snap swivels on wire leaders when fishing for toothy fish, but no more snaps for me when bass fishing.
There's definitely something to be said about chopping a little off of the business end of your line when you change lures.
I've gone to using "tactical style" snaps for all of my hardbaits. They are the strongest available and have a great design. I found a pack of 30 or so for like 12 bucks at gander outdoors. They came in sizes smaller than the actual tactical angler brand which are more geared for saltwater/bigger lures. Here is what they look like.

I think it’s probably important to note that if you use a snap, you should still check your line often.
Since I normally bank fish 90% of the time, I only carry a max of 3 rods with me, and my crankbait/reaction bait rod gets braid to a mono leader. Switching out lures often would have me cutting my line down to just braid without a snap. But I’ll check my line often, and retie it whenever necessary.
