If I have a 50 dollar budget for a pair, which brand can I get that isn't complete crap? This is my first pair and I have a tendency to lose shades, so nothing too fancy is necessary.
I get cheapo (around $20) iGogs Fisheyes from gander. They work great.
I have a pair from Cabelas $20, amber lenses and they work really well. After 4 seasons now the paint on the frame is chipping. I was looking at maybe getting some SK S11 glasses this season. I can never find them in a store to look at so I don't know if that's a good or bad thing.
Strike King makes a couple of different models -
I've been using them for the last few years.
They do exactly what they're suppose to and are reasonably priced.

be lucky youre not looking for a prescription pair like i had to get, expensive...
I know for a fact some of the older guys, particularly those in Florida and other places where the sun is very intense, will back me up on this....
There are two things in fishing that you should never be "cheap" with: your glasses and your sunscreen.
I want you to remember that phrase 50 years from now when you are still able to see your skin that has no cancer.
I have a set of costas but i dont wear them at work (i work from a boat) for fear of breaking them, so i have a few cheap pair too. The Berkely fishing glasses at walmart are ok. But my favorite cheap set is made by Calcutta. I think they were 25.00. They are by far the best "cheap" polarized glasses ive ever had.
solar bat makes some cheaper versions for like $40 at TW
I got these for christmas

Just bought 2 pairs of the new Strike King S11's (one amber and one smoke) for $60 and got a free hat at an Expo this past weekend.
They are also showing up at WalMart now for $30. Cheaper than TW.
They work really well.
I have a pair of strike kings and they worked really well before I upgraded. Still keep them as a back up/beach pair.
I felt the same way about sunglasses until I actually splurged and bought a pair over 100 dollars, and now Ill never look back. I am currently wearing a pair of Native Silencers which can be had online for right around 100 bucks (I bought the extra lenses when I got them a few years ago so I think I paid something like $140 for the whole package), but they are snug, soft, and clear as day. Plus I dropped them off my hat one day onto pavement, scratched the lenses reallllly bad, sent them back to Native and for $30 bucks had a brand new pair, frame and all. Ive been looking into a pair of Numas though because of how durable they are (you cant rip the frames apart) and their price is right around $100 as well. Only thing is that I cant find them in a store to try them on. I'll probably resort to trying on Scott Martins when I go down to fish with him next month
$5 Berkleys at wally world. Love mine
All good suggestions. I really liked the $35 XPS sunnies I had; however, if I didn't decide to change to Costas, I'd probably go for Strike King, Berkleys, etc. My kids have used these from Walmart and they are okay.
I have a pair of Costas. They are at the bottom of Lake Erie.

Save your nickels, I can fix that.
Blew my cash on mustard for mustard sammiches.
Seriously, though. Good glasses are nice, but polarized by default means the block UV-A/B rays. Unless they aren't "really" polarized. My blue costa 580s were about the nicest pair of sunglasses I ever owned. Dropping them in the drink was the end of expensive sunglasses for me. I think I lost three pairs of good glasses in the drink that year.

Momma always said, "if you keep playing with it, it'll fall off"
I am terrible hard on glasses, you name it I have doen it to them............in the lake, steped/sat on, left who knows where. I have been using $20 SK glasses for years and they work great for me. This year I am going "high end" and step up to SK's $40 ones. LOL

That's a heart breaking loss, J.
My first purchase after buying my Costas was 14" Cablz.
I just bought 12" adjustable Cablz and what a big difference. I feel far more secure. Hopefully they'll be secure enough to not find their way to the bottom of one of the local reservoirs or the Chesapeake Bay.

These articles say slightly different to that so might want to make sure with whatever glasses are purchased

Maybe I'm in the minority, but, I was only given one set of eyes and I want them to work every time I open them till the day I pass! If you loose them or break them, you need to try and not do that!, I'm going to look for the glasses that offer me the most protection I can afford. Haber. Check them out. Reasonably priced and great protection. I have had them for 4 years now, take care of them and don't wear them to work. I have a decent pair of Bolle' that I use for work. Not very expensive, found them on sale and have had them for 6 years. Knock wood, haven't lost or broken them but if I do, I'm going to find me another pair of Haber's with the quickness!!

Whatever you find, I would absolutely buy a pair of Cablz retainers. I now have the adjustable version and they're awesome. Hold is super tight.
Have tried a number of eyewear retention styles and the Cablz is the best (and original). Even Costa makes a $10 knock off, but not as good, IMHO.... FWIW.

If they're 20 dollars and they work great, you can't beat that! Thanks Francho
I just read through all the comments, and I greatly appreciate the suggestions. I have owned (past tense) 3 different pairs of 100 dollar oakleys, and thy have all met their demise in one way or another. Introducing water to the equation, now that I fish, scares me into wanting the Berkeley Sk or gander mountain options.
You can't beat a pair of Oakleys. I have a polarized pair of Batwolfs, and man do I love those when I go fishing. They go for $250 though, so not exactly on the cheap side.
One option would be to go to Costco to buy really reduced price on quality sunglasses. There is a huge markup on sunglasses and Costco has the prices on just about all of them amazingly low. Bolle Raybans even Maui Jim. Check it out you may stay in budget and still get a quality pair of sunglasses. Another option is that your insurance may cover a portion of the cost of the sunglasses. Buddy of mine got a pair of vuarnet sunglasses. No prescription and the insurance covered them fully. Some options.

I will absolutely second the Calcuttas. Awesome little sunglasses for the price. I recently got a pair of Batwolf glasses as a gift... I wonder if I could send them in and get some polarized lenses put in?
I have 2 pairs of Costas that I wear fishing and nowhere else. I've got some of the $5 Berkley polarized glasses from Wal-Mart for everything else. I've tried my buddy's Solar Bats, they seemed really nice for 50-60 dollar glasses.

Interesting, thanks for the links!
Check sierra trading post or campmor and see what deals you can find. Julbo, Native, Smith, etc. I got a great pair of Smith's for $50 (reg $200). Win win situation cheap and quality (and great warranties.)
The Spiderwire polarized glasses are dang good for the price also. I think they are 15 bucks and you can get them in a few different lens and frame colors. I keep a pair in both of my vehicles and myboat because if i ever leave the boat or truck with them i will lose them for sure.
I thought I would lose "expensive" pairs of glasses too.
When you've got $200+ glasses on your head with some type of cable looped behind your neck, you'd have to TRY and lose them. You become very careful (unless you are Francho apparently) when that type of money is involved.
I can't stress Quan's point enough.....you only get ONE SINGLE SET OF EYES.
You all make such good points that I'm torn! I'm getting them by this weekend, so I'll let you know what I went with. Again, thanks for all the knowledge and suggestions. One more quick question - can someone give me the rule concerning lens color? I'm hoping to be able to see fish in the creek at depths of 1-3 feet when the water is not so clear and lighting conditions are not perfect-can't beat pullin bass out of a creek you could jump across!
Personally, I prefer some type of amber or rose lens, that's just me! Gives you great vision when it's cloudy or shady but still gives you glare protection when it's really sunny. Darker lenses won't allow penetration when the sun is behind the clouds as much!
Amber for sure.
Lots of your mirrored lenses use an amber base but the mirroring cuts the light transmission.
I really don't understand how one loses a pair of glasses while wearing them. I have been wearing prescription specs since I was a child and have never had them fall off of my head that I can remember, especially not into the water. I also don't use any type of safety cord with them either. Just bend the ear pieces to fit your head and call it a day (heat helps, use a hair dryer.)
I stupidly took mine off while running, and put them in my shirt pocket. I thought I snapped the flap, but I guess not. I leaned over, and "BLOOP!," into the drink....

That makes sense. Notice I said "while wearing them." I absolutely need my glasses to see, so putting them in my pocket is not an option for me. It's funny that I have a hard time understanding that some people only wear them when they need them, since I always need them thus always wear them.
Had a nice pair of Costas end up in the drink. Running down the Potty, buddy maneuvers around a deadhead WOT, turned around to see if we clear it and woosh, one bounce off the back deck and in! Last time without a lanyard!!
Gander has 20 dollar, camo colored polarized glasses, the camo is the important part of the equation, all the rest is a bonus.
i've got a pair of Guideline's from Cabelas with amber lenses. Super lightweight frame and fairly high quality/durable optic. I think they were 49.99 2 years ago. Still using them.
edit: Just checked Guidelines website. I have the Mantis model, now I see that they are MSRP for $70. Great budget shades IMO

Gave me head aches, I went with coyotes
Amber it is! 2 of mine were lost to dog chewing, and the other pair was left at the baseball field.
Camo is tempting jig meister. It would match half
mywardrobe at least.
I have a pair of Ocean Waves that I bought at the Bass Pro in Springfield Mo many many years ago. Not cheap buy any means, about $150 back in 1990, but they are incredible as far as what you can see under water. They are not made anymore apparently because I would buy another pair in a heart beat if I could find them. I normally just have on a pair of $10 dollar sunglasses that I use to drive and usually forget to grab the OW's. The difference is staggering.
