Are chatterbaits productive lures?? I've seen a bunch of these around here for sale, usually on clearance, and I'm guessing it's cause they don't sell well here. Looks like a jig with a square blade attached to the head. How do you use it?? I'm reluctant to try one, especially since I have nearly zero experience with a jig anyway.
A few years ago some tournaments in Florida were won using them. After that, the supply depleted so fast that some were being sold for $100+. They have since been copied by several lure companies and individuals. It was credited with a second place in the Bassmaster's Classic when held on the Kissimmee chain of lakes. Most of the bass I caught yesterday were with it. It's less of an "investment" than most of the Japanese made baits and large swimbaits. It's the right tool for certain conditions, just like most baits. Some touring pros have their boats wrapped with the Chatterbait brand.
Most, as I do, use it like a spinnerbait. It can be fished a lot slower and has an incredible vibration unmatched by any other lure type.
You do not have to have any jig experience to fish these. The basic chuck and wind technique works well sometimes. Chatterbaits have their time and place, not doubt in my mind.
I tried them and didn't really care for them. However like anythng else give em a try. They may be just the ticket on your water.
I've had a few good days at Lake of the Ozarks around boat docks fishing it like a jig . I'd let it fall and pick it up till I felt the vibration then I'd sit it back down. Worked well like this.

Agree! You cant go wrong with having one or two in your box. Last year we had a couple of good days with a black and blue fishing for smallies.

They have a place in my tackle box!!! I have a few of 'em and they've put me on bass. I'd say try a couple out.
I have a couple and have done just OK with them. I have better luck with a good old fashion spinnerbait. They are fun to fish though.
My fishing partner brought a chatterbait to our last outing.... I'd never see one before. Ugly looking bait. I won't throw it.
get yourself a booyah boogie bait. these things never let me down and are extremly versitile as far as what conditions you can throw them in. ive had them work in the middle of both summer and winter and seem to be able to catch somthing more times than not, one of my more productive lures, one to to watch tho is to make sure after you get hung up or catch a fish that the clip that holds the body to the blade hasnt come loose
I like them alright. I think a Single-colorado spinnerbait is more productive, but yes chatterbaits work.
Yes, they're worth it. They've become one of my go-to baits, especially for nightfishing.
Many different retrieves work, but my most productive to date is slow-rolling it along the bottom and ticking any structure/cover and pulsating it. Sometimes when a fish hits it, you'll just feel the vibrations stop. Othertimes, they just nail it.
I really like chatterbaits. Worth having them.
I haven't had spectacular success with them, but I will say this, when they hit, they rip the rod out of my hands.
Falcon
All Chatterbaits are is spinnerbait substitutes.
i throw chatter baits in a river system that is filled with shad, i take off the skirt and trailer, and put a fluke on, works well for me
i have a few but my favorite one is the karu version...i haven't had a chance to actually fish it but i tried it rite after ice out just to use it and it had the best vibration and the skirt is better then some of the other brands
A tool just like any other lure. They certainly will catch fish. Not a "substitute" for any bait. Just another tool in the tool box.
Investing? ;D
If you're buying, steer clear of the inferior dull hooks of the Chatterbait.
Out of the 'substitutes', the Strike King Pure Poison is the best of the lot. Quality hook, quality blade, quality oval split rings.
Well I say investing because when I buy I usually don't just get one or two. I have over 50 spinnerbaits as it is.
What I can't figure out about these things is when rigging, does the blade go back over the head, or does it point forward and downward like a crankbait lip?? And another reason I haven't tried them yet is cause the blade does attach in a way that looks like it could come undone easily. I'd be always worried it would cause me to lose a fish. I'm not much on "gimcrack" gadgets. To me this looked like a jig that somebody slapped a hunk of metal on top of and called a new lure. If that's all it was, I could easily make some out of jigs instead of buying them new. And I can also look at a spinnerbait or buzzbait in the package and readily see it's inherent action, but this chatterbait I just can't tell that it will do all that much in the water.
Simple , if you are that unsure about them , don't invest in them.

Tie to the clip, cast and retrieve. The blade is on top. You will have no doubt about the action when you retrieve it. You will feel it all the way to your elbows. Just get one or two and try them. I know guys that now use them as their primary search baits. Some people like them, some don't.
I feel pretty much the same way as brent, although I'll add in the list a jig, so if you have a jig/spinnerbait and buzzbait you don't need a chatterbait.
I bought one of these baits in the Booyah version, boogie bait I think it was called, anyway the hook on the thing had a bump imprinted on it about a dot behind the hook point, I had to file the bump off, and the hook still wasn't anything "quality" sharp.
I caught a few fish on the bait but nothing worth bragging about, I feel a spinnerbait/jig can easily replace this bait. Although I have heard a black/blue one works well at night, not enough to get me to buy another though.. Unless these things go on sale for 2-3 dollars a peice I won't be buying another.
I took the skirt and trailer off of mine and put a Lake Fork Tackle live magic shad on it instead. I use it more like a crankbait/swimbait for bass hanging out around deep water structure.
I think I only caught one fish on it the way it came in the package. Many other anglers have had more success with a fluke, paddle tail, or some other shad imitation on it.
X2 on the Pure Poison
90% of the people around here throw tandem spinners, buzzbaits, hoolapoppers, and some type of worm, I use the chatter style because it gives them a new bait to look at.
just got some not too long ago. Used them a few times with no luck. Interested to see how they will do in the dead heat of a southern summer

+1 My two white chatterbaits didn't produce, and I'm not really sure why I purchaed the gold shad boogie bait. I had my first 30+ fish day on this bait...it was unreal. This is out of a couple acre pond. I bet it averaged out to be a keeper every other cast. I now stock the boogie bait in gold shad and lavender shad.

I have caught many Largemouths and Smallies on the CB, 95% of the time I had it rigged with just a super fluke and no skirt. As with a spinnerbait you will have to change your retrive speed to see what the Bass wants. I always sharpen the hook out of the package and have no problems with landing the fish. Good Luck
I was at Walmart yesterday looking at the Chatterbaits brand and the Strike King Pure Poison and the Booyah Boogiebait. I liked the Pure Poison best out of them, the way the blade attaches to the head it won't come unhooked like the Boogiebait will. The Chatterbait seemed like a good one but no apparent advantage over the Pure Poison that I could see, except for the prerigged trailers they had on them, which I don't like the looks of that much. The Pure Poison was sold about $1.50 cheaper for some reason. I'm gonna get one of each color they had in the Pure Poison......blue/black, white, and chartreuse.........and see what happens when I fish them. Thanks for the replies.
I've had some luck with Chatterbaits catching bass, but not so good luck with the quality of those baits. I've had a few come apart leaving only the blade attached to the line. I've had a a couple where the eye where the blade was attached actually broke.
Yeah I was noticing the part where the split ring attaches to the blade looks kind of thin. I actually wondered how strong that would be but otherwise didn't think too much on it. Now I'm wondering......hmmm.........
Think I'll give 'em a try anyway. Seems everyone here has caught a few fish on them in one way or another. If it puts a few more in the boat then it's worth it to me.
I purchased the chatterbait kit because it was a better value, more trailors and skirts. I lost one jig and caught a fish on the other. The strikes on the chatterbait is unreal. Like another member said it felt like the fish wants to rip my rod/reel out of my hand.
Oh I love mine! I have caught a 6 pound bass and many N. Pike! If you can get one!!!!
I have had pretty good luck with mine, but like anything else the imitation baits are not near the quality.
I would suggest the Chatter Bait kit from Wal-mart or either BPS. They come with a jig chater bait in the kit and multiple skirts and trailer kits also . When the bite is tough the chatter bait is one of my got to baits.
i used to HATE chatterbaits. i had 4 and lost all of them before catching a fish. i told myslef i would never buy one again.
i had a tournament this weekend at a pretty big bass lake and was throwing cranks, spinnerbaits, and jigs. while i was thorwing a spinnerbait in the underwater trees, my baoter was throwing a chatterbait with a different trailer and on his first 2 cast caught 2 keepers. he offered me a try so i took it and caught 2 keepers on it within 5 casts!
i am a firm beleiever now and will probably throw them more than spinnerbaits. i think they are awesome
Kinda keep this quiet....just between you and me.....a guy on the FLW tour just won two tourneys in a row on a chatterbait/jig/swim senko tail doo-hickey. In Florida Toho and California Delta at that...... impressive indeed.
Remember....shhhh. :-X
I invested and I have caught fish on them.
I've got two of them and I have never used them once.
QuoteI've got two of them and I have never used them once.
Word.
I think I'll give em a shot at my tournament this weekend though.
I caught my PB off one
I have thought that blade baits are better than Chatterbaits. I have no confidence in them cause I don't take the time to throw one.
My GF on the other hand has lost some very nice fish on them, and caught some as well. She will ask if its a good chatterbait day almost every trip.
She has confidence in them. After our last trip, they have their place in my box as well, they flat out produced the spinner in muddy water.
Also this year when the STREN series was on Falcon, half the winning sacks weight was caught on a chatterbait with skirt removed and replaced with a Lake Fork Magic Shad, so this bait can have trailers added, fish as it is or can be modified.
Its hard to argue with someone who catches over 50 lbs of bass on a bait that helped him win over $100,000.
The Chatterbait catches quality fish. I caught a 4lb on the Chatterbait to save our tournament chances last summer on the Potomac. I prefer it to a spinnerbait in a lot of instances. I caught this 4lb 10oz bass on Stick Marsh on a 3/8oz White chatterbait with a Smokin Shad Super Fluke JR trailer:
When I broke one out at a tournament last weekend a got a few negative comments. I don't care. I feel that chatter-baits are a very versatile bait. You can use them as a jig, a swim jig, a spinnerbait, and a jerk bait. Where else can you get an all round bait for $4.00. Try the original Chatter- bait to avoid the critics. Get a few colors. Black and blue, yellow and white, and a green and brown. Fish them fast, fish them slow, pull them like a jerk bait. You'll catch fish!!!
Enjoy!!

Hey Tpayneful. Love the shirt 8-). Great place with great people!
But back to chatterbaits. I've only got a few fish with them, so they're not bad and they're not good in my opinion.
Hey Bass XL, that shirt should say "My Wife went on a cruise and all I got was this shirt" Every year my wife goes on a Cruise with her friends in early February and this year they stopped in Cozumel and hit Senor Frogs. I heard great stories about the place! The trade off is that I get to fish in Florida for a week! This year I spent it at Stick Marsh and it was well worth it!
I fish them a lot in early to late spring. I throw them anytime I could throw a spinnerbait or crankbait.
I prefer to make my own. Lots of fun and you can tailor them to your waters.
Yeah its a great place. If anyone goes there, never say, "no rum." Because they will LOAD IT UP!!! ok I'm done. sorry. :-X
