ICAST 2019 New Products/Rumors/Wishlist 2024

fishing user avatarMegastink reply :

It’s that time! We’re only a few weeks away from ICAST! I love this time of year. ICAST gossip brings out my inner teenaged girl...

Post any new items you hear about or see (including links). Even if it’s a rumor, post it! If there’s anything you hope to see, post that as well!

Ill go first: Strike King coming out with Carolina Chrome color (straight chrome) in several topwaters and a few hardbaits.

I hole to see: Duckett spinning Rods with reel seats similar to St Croix Eyecon and Enigma. Lightweight Lews spinning reels (<7oz 3000 size). I hope Strike King comes out with a Perch colored swimbait and would LOVE to see a SK glide bait and pencil popper.

Rage...Ned.  ????

I'm excited for Jordan Lee's new series of plastics.  I've been waiting patiently for them, but I never put 2 and 2 together and figured they would release them at ICAST.  They being Berkley.  Them being the Champ Craw and Champ Minnow.  The swimbait doesn't excite me much, it'll have to be cheap and effective because I've already got that covered.

As someone who hates the Ned but understands it's usefulness, I hope YUM drops a Ned offering.

What Strike king should also do is rebrand the baby menace as the Ned menace. It has been very effective for me on either a Ned head or a slider spider head with the 2/0 hook. Not sure many have given that bait a try.

Also hope they bring out the menace in smoke purple in all 3 sizes. That has been a great clear water color for me.

Why, it is just a gimmicky name for a rig/style of fishing many of us have fished for years without even realizing it. I think Zman just marketed the heck out of it which has brought it to a different level. The Strike King Ned baits give me hope that companies won’t just over charge for half a senko.

Not trying to highjack this thread, but quick question. On the 2/0 spider slider head, that offset section is very short and narrow to work with. Does the baby menace hold well bc I imagine it being too thick? That’s why I only use skinny 4” finesse worms on that particular style.

It has worked fine for me. Before the pro sliders I used to fish tubes on that head with no issues. The classic spider with the 3/0 hook and the pro slider get the most use now, but I need some more of the 2/0 size because it is a perfect fit for the small yum crawbug.

Because of the hook design I hook it below the midpoint on the nose. To make the menace last a bit longer I flip it 180 to rerig it through undamaged plastic. I am a bit thrifty, but they seem to hit em pretty good once they are properly seasoned;)

What I am learning this year is river fish are hard on plastics. The menace and baby menace only last 4 or 5 fish on the river vs 10 to 12 on the lake. Had one menace get 23 fish.

Went to to do a picture of one, but it looks like the baby menaces are rigged on the 3/0 version because I am out of the 2/0 version.

I love throwing a shallow crankbait and had a few good outings with some cheaper flat side crankbaits late last fall and early this spring. I like the Berkley Diggers and other hard baits of theirs I have used so far. I saw these pop up in some "Top Lures" articles for I think BASS and MLF this spring and was intrigued. Berkley has a video from the Classic about them on their facebook page you can find if you search for it. Hoping to pick a few up for the fall.

3 new Trolling Motors

Honestly, this is what I am looking forward to the most. I try to keep it simple and not buy every new bait and "thing" that comes out but I've wanted/needed (kinda...) a new trolling motor since I bought this boat in March and really even when I had my previous boat. I was on the verge of buying an Ultrex a few weeks ago but then it hit me that all these new trolling motors would be released at iCast. My biggest hope is for a trolling motor with ultrex capabilities with the same quality but better price (I know, it's a lot to ask for) and with no bugs. I am a Lowrance guy so I am hoping their new trolling motor will fit my needs. With that being said regarding the bugs, I might wait a bit because anything new is gonna have a few kinks.

I am still excited to see all the new stuff released and will probably end up spending a couple hundred on icast released items.

Just keep making stuff in solid blue and offering it in bulk packs. I've got my 100pk of Yomamas in sapphire blue that never leaves the boat. Big contributor to my first tournament win of the year Thursday night too. Quickly tearing through my stockpile of blue Devil's Spears and Pitbosses I use on my solid blue bladed jigs, going to need a replacement soon and not many options out there in solid blue.

I have them, and they're great, but they're also pricey to use soley for trailers. Reactions Innovations is the same way with their backwater blue color. That was the great thing about the Havoc baits, they were cheap and durable so cutting them up to use for trailers wasn't a big deal. BBB are affordable and durable a lot like the Havoc line up was,  and they've been really effective for me too.

I am going to say that Minn Kota will eventually figure out how to put their side finding transducers built in to their trolling motors since they own Humminbird - which would be nice as the transducer cable running down the shaft is mighty unsightly.

Personal wish list - inline undewater camera that don't leak or suck, castable depth finder that actually works and not loses signal all the time and here is my biggest wish - for rod manufactures to list the weight of their rods in ounces.

100% agree, I go to both for work and LV blows Orlando out of the water for restaurant choice.

The “best” spot I have found in Orlando is Lee and Rick’s Oyster Bar. It is a dive for sure but it’s ambiance and prices cannot be beat.

Doesn't look like they could afford a light bulb either. Style over substance with that film, you can barely see what the baits are doing as they chose dark baits against a black background with very little illumination. I know it was about mood, but really?

That said, the fluke (I could actually see that one) looks like it could be great on a swim jig or chatterbait.  The general theme seems to be to "Rage Menace" every category of baits. ????

fishing user avatarHook2Jaw reply :

I run rods in 13s 80 dollar price range, and so far, they've been pretty decent sticks.  I can't say they're as nice as a Dobyn's, Fenwick, or St. Croix, but I've enjoyed them so far.

I imagine those plastics are going to be a tad out of my price range, so I'll probably remain YUM, Berkley, Big Bite faithful, but for a budget angler I've been pretty please with my 3 Chromes and I'm really looking forward to when my 7'6" MH gets here.  The medium casting, medium spinning, and medium light spinning have crushed my Daiwa Aird-X lineups sensitivity.

You still won't catch me with bright green rods or reels that don't say Daiwa on them, though.

One thing that did catch my eye was the new TM prop from motorguide. If it does all they say I might need to pick one of those up, as long as it fits on a Minkota Terrova. From what I have read about Ned and the Midwest finesse approach these fall right into what a Ned rig is. Have read that Ned has been using the TRD hawgz. Essentially it’s a sub 4” plastic retrieved on a light jig head.

Really not bad when you consider the prices of a top of the line trolling motor and a top of the line GPS system.

This way you have both professionally installed, giving you one big advantage over others in tournaments and having fun watching the screen when you fish for fun.

What the masses want is an entry-level spot lock trolling motor it was a good foot pedal for <$1,000. Doesn’t need to link or do anything fancy. Just hold position and have a good footpedal.

That’s what would really sell.

I hear you on that.  I was using it before it was the industry thing.  This guy in MO put me on it years ago.

With that said, I don't chase rigs.  I am so old school.  Texas and Carolina where all I used before the bed rig.  I rarely wacky, just recently thought about Neko, and then I just saw a video on dum-dum rig.

Whatever you catch fish on, do what you do.  I am just expanding more because of tournament fishing.

Oh I am interested...  I knew I was going ultrex next year.  Garmin has already got my money going all livescope.  Now I can have less wires with the built in sonar.  Plus full integration.  If you are a garmin user and wanted all the nice features, you have no choice but to look here.  I was really hoping they would come in at $2500 or less...

Now to start selling things I don't need around the house...

Motorguide just introduced their new trolling motor, with a price you might be interested in, plus it says you can hook any brand electronics to it. This is a true cable steer with anchor mode.

Those big boy boats.  I'd prefer the option of a 360 drive on my Compass.

Well, maybe not the Revo 16 or PA17.

Nothing is a fast as a Revo 16, I suppose.

And, Hobie appears to have solved the reverse riddle. Just saw a video of how the new drive rotates 360 degrees and its flippers push up and out of harm's way if they encounter something . . . like an unseen log.

Alas, Hobies are really testing the limits on price. Oldtown Predator PDLs got a price cut, didn't they, for this year? And, the Predators are super vessels. They are a heck of a value, for sure.

That sounds perfect, if the price is more affordable and they don't fall to bits.

From what I read the Tour starts at $1399 and the Tour Pro starts at $2299. They are offered in 24 and 36v.

fishing user avatarTim Kelly reply :

That's not significantly less expensive than an Ultrex is it? Was hoping they'd manage to drop the price a bit better than that, they'd steal a big share of the market if they did I would think.

Anyone know when the Mag Menace will be available? Really hoping they add more colors to the Menace, smoke Purple and Baby Menace, Smoke Purple and Motor Oil Red.

Also any other Rage releases other than the Ned stuff?

Saw on their FB page a Rage punch bug coming out. Kind of looked like a ribbed Menace.

Just caught the new Rage Ned baits on TW and have to say I am disappointed in the prices. It seems all the new Rage baits are 6.99 (Googan Prices) from the Ned baits to the Punch bugs and the magnum menace. I hope the Menace, baby menace and standard structure bugs don't go up as well. I will stock up on Black Friday, but wow to the prices. I guess if people pay it the companies can charge it. If they push up much higher, I will have to go with other options.

If they can't out price the real deal Zman stuff that works perfectly as it does then there's no point.  I've been using the same 8 pack of Zinkers that I cut in half for my Neds for the last year and a half.

hard to beat the long lasting  quality of Zman.  I can usually get zman stuff around $3 these days.

Before all this marketing of the Ned rig and before zman TRDs where easily found or available,  I was purchasing a set of jig heads for a little over a dollar and a pack of yum stickbaits for $3.  I was killing bass with that combo.  I still have tons of both in stock.  I use the zman stuff almost as much, but I like the soft hooks of the jig heads better.  The zman hooks are short, but they will break on you.  I have lost a lot of fish because the hook is broken off.

A lot of the soft plastic prices are crazy these days...especially when some days you only get a 12oz fish out of each bait.  But the trade off is less fish in regards to the cheaper baits a lot of days.

i saw this when Lucky Craft first came out, once companies saw some people would pay the extra, brands like Rapala and others suddenly got more expensive. Chatterbaits now that the Jackhammer took off, most new offers are over 10 bucks. Now it is starting in soft plastics. While I understand it, it is frustrating, and does cap what some/many folks/kids can purchase.

fishing user avatarJediAmoeba reply :

The Daiwa Neko worms are one of my favorites to throw but holy crap are they soft...if you throw it a bunch of times or cast too hard it may rip off the hook.  And at .75 cents a worm they get expensive.  Honestly, worm fishing can be more expensive than fishing 25 dollar jerkbaits a lot of days.  Especially in my land of infinite pickerel.

It seems the standard price for good plastic worms is approaching that range.

This is a really cool bait but I think it's too expensive. If it holds up well it might be worth it.

This is why I've switched to a lot of YUM baits. Everyone else is pushing their prices up, meanwhile I can still get a pack of YUM plastics for 3 or 4 bucks. Now with them releasing some of their other popular baits in 30 packs, icing on the cake man. They're even making one of my favorite jig trailers in one of my favorite jig trailer colors now.

I too have a fair amount of Yum products and the Crawbug has caught the most fish of any lure I own. Go figure since it really doesn’t have any action but still catches a ton of fish. I will use the Menace till it gets its price raised to 6.99, fingers crossed it doesn’t, and only buy them on Black Friday like I do now. The other baits in the Rage line I have go tos that are similar. Just a bummer with the prices on some of the stuff I am seeing early on TW. Thought the Storm glide bait would be cheaper too, oh well.

Strike King is super proud of their new vibrating jig at $14 a whack.  I don't understand what makes it that much more than the Zman chatterbaits that can be bought for $4 anywhere other than maybe a better hook.

Brown bass on rivers. I fish it on a slider head and do apply gel scent to it. I fish it on a rocky stretch loaded with craws. I always intend to try it on a lake, but it always gets lost in the bait shuffle.

Thanks.  I don't have any slider heads, I may try pegging a bullet and throwing them in my local rivers.  Seems like they definitely carry more craws than the nearby ponds I have.  Plus, they're clearer, and it seems with the little action the crawbug produces it's more of a visual stimuli to the feeesh.

I've had decent success with them drop shotting and fishing on a small jig head, more often than not swimming them slowly on spinning gear.

When weeds aren't an issue I have fished them on a ballhead jig with a 1/0 or 2/0 hook. I just find the slider spider head comes through rocks better than most so I stick with that.
