Alright did a search with no luck so I am going out on a whim here.
I am sure this has been posted a thousand times but here I go.
I am going to Bass Pro this weekend and need to get some lures to get my collection going. I have no cranks , no jigs, only one spinner bait, and a few plastic worms.
Can you guys please help me with a list of what I should by to get going a bit better?? Maybe colors, weights, and descriptions would be of great help.
Anyway I will greatly appreciate any and all input. I just don't want to get in there and get all overwhelmed at the choices of all the lures they have.
Hmmm... it depends on where you live, water, weather, and is there brush where you live?
You cant go wrong with yammamoto senkos... if you're going for numbers, use the 4". if you're going for bigger fish use the 5"
I would grab some 1/2 oz rat-L-Traps in chrome black back and natural shad colors. Definitely some Senkos or similar style baits in watermelon/red flake. Anything that says Rage Tail on it in just about any color! Some bullet weights in sizes ranging from 1/8oz to 1/2 oz. Also some EWG Gamakatsu or Owner hooks in sizes from 2/0-5/0 for T-rigs.

Yammo senkos in 4" & 5"
7" plastic worms--some form of greenpumpkin/watermelon & a darker color ie junebug or black
1/8--1/4--3/8 bullet weights
RattleTraps--chome, firetiger, and craw
Rebel Pop-R's--i find that color doesn't matter a whole lot
"Spook" type lures
Shallow cranks--I prefer the Mann's 1-
This should give you a good variety and allow you to fish shallow and deep.
Mostly I will be fishing in the Middle Tennessee area.
Zoom trick worms- just pick a color, preferably green pumpkin
Zoom finesse worms- once again pick any color
Rebel pop-r- silver with black back
Strike king red eye shad- sexy shad
Gamakatsu hooks- 1/0, 2/0
Stanly wedge spinnerbaits- pick a color you like
weights- try to get one of those packs that has variety
Gary Yamamoto senko- green pumpkin with red flakes

Plastics: GYCB 5" Senko, Fat Ika; Rage Tail 10" Anaconda, Lobster
rigged on a 3/8 oz Evolution Shak e2 jig head.
Lipless crankbait: 1 1/2 oz XCalibur Xr50 Chrome Blue/ Orange
Shallow crankbait: Bomber Square A; Norman Fat Boy; and Bagley BII
Spinnerbait: 1/2 oz Terminator, White, Tandem Willow Blades
Buzzbait: Rage Tail Shad; 3/8 oz Cavitron, Black on black
8-)
If the Lucky Craft RCs are still on sale I would try a 1.5...best shallow cranks available IMO
I would also take a look at fat free shads, Strike King cranks and Red Eye Shads, excalibur xr 50, and the BPS XPS cranksm good baits and a good price.
The Bass Pro brand of plastics is worth a look as well
Some of my favs are:
Zoom Finesse worms or shakyhead worms. Color: watermelon seed
Strike King 10" Anaconda. Color: Pumpkinseed or red june bug
Chrome and blue Rat L trap
I'm a big worm guy and i'm not too familiar with crankbaits...most of the time i get a bright colored one and get it medium diving. Hope this helps because trust me i know it can be overwhelming looking at all that stuff. I normally have my cell phone ready to call my cousin....lol.
I just want to say I appreciate all the advice each of you have given me. Its great to actually see a forum where people are not jumping all over you. Everyone here wants to help and I think thats great.
But please continue to give me your thoughts on the subject.
Thanks again
I would definitely get some soft plastics. I personally like the BPS brand plastics and they are cheap and put fish in the boat. My favorite is the BPS ribbontail watermelon red flake in 7". Also the BPS curly tail (I think thats the name) in black w/ blue tail 6". you can switch the colors based on your preference but those are some that work well.
I see a bait monkey attack just about to happen!
I live like 3hrs away from BPS or Cabellas so I know what you are talking about, I like to stick to natural looking colors for crankbaits myself, I have not have a lot of succes with plastics (it is my 1st season fishing t-rig and other plastic technics) so I can help a lot on that.
I hear ya ! I live about 10mins away from BPS so I find myself stopping in there at least 3 times a week!!
usually a couple good rattle traps, i use strike king not going to break the bank but a good lure, jigs( i have pb&j brown with blue fleck and black with blue fleck) i use chigger craw trailers, a couple spinners, and i use torpedos for top water that would be a good start
Ikas, double tail grubs,(gycb) greens and browns (194 I think).
Zoom trick worms (brown flake), salamanders, Flukes (babybass, pearl)
rapala husky jerk (babybass, pearl)
Strike king spinners (White,chartreuse,black)
gitzit tubes (brownflake, greenflake,pearl w/silverflake)
spotremover jigs (1/4, 3/16)
paca chunks (browns and greens)
gamakatsu drop shot hooks 2 2/0 3/0
EWG hooks 1/0-5/0 gama or owner
Don't forget plenty of 3600 and 3700 boxes to put all that loot in. The bait monkey is going to love you!! ;D Hopefully while he is riding you he will ignore me. I am heading to BPS saturday also but the keeper of the checkbook is going along. >
Have fun!

In my opinion one can not give you good advice without knowing what rods/reels that you have, where you're fishing, what types of cover/structure you're fishing, if you are looking to catch fish in quantity or quality, etc.
A 1/2 oz bait isn't going to be the best option if you only have a M spinning rod. Jigs aren't going to be the best choice if you're using rods with a medium action or something like an ugly stick. If you're shore fishing weedy ponds then canks aren't going to be a good option.
I will be fishing some local ponds and lakes. On my local pond I will be fishing on the shores. The lake on the other hand in the boat.
I currently have 2 bait casters with MH rods and a spinning rod with a MH rod as well.
Do I have the best setups....no but I am trying with your help to better prepare my self.
Well I hope the Bait Monkey doesnt ride me too hard! 8-) My wife is going along so I have to keep it pretty reasonable. Hey you have to keep them happy.

Well then I'd get a variety of stuff and start working on individual techniques. I really like spinnerbaits and would buy a few of them. The Strike King KVD series has been good to me. I'd get some topwater classics like a Pop-R, Jitterbug, and buzzbait. The Mann's 1- series is good for super shallow cranking. The Rapala DT series is good for everything else. The Rage Tail line of baits are pricey but work superbly. The space monkey and anacondas are real nice. Not to get into the entire senko debate, but I wouldn't buy them from BPS. If you look at my sig you'll see where I buy most of my soft plastics from. Great prices/selection/service. Same with jigs but different link.
Just match the weight of the lure with the ratings on your rods and you'll be good.
Tyrius can I ask why that you would not buy any senko's from BPS??

Because I buy my stick baits from the link in my sig.

QuoteMostly I will be fishing in the Middle Tennessee area.
Look at some Zoom Lizards in Pumkin, Some Rat-L-Traps like stated before Silver with Blue Backs. Possibly some Rapalas
