Fish Attractants 2024

fishing user avatarWilliam Snee reply :

Which fish attractants are good to use on plastic worms?  Is there an advantage to using them?

fishing user avatarJar11591 reply :

I use MegaStrike on my soft plastics. One advantage to MegaStrike is it supposed to help the soft plastic pull through the weeds easier, almost like a lubricant.

fishing user avatarCrestliner2008 reply :

I agree with jar11591. Megastrike is very sticky and stays on your bait much better than most, for a longer period of time. Seems to do a good job of masking offensive human odors and does keep fish holding onto your bait longer - in my experience anyway. Scent in any form or manufacture, is all about confidence and putting the odds in your favor.  And I don't believe there are any studies wherein modern day scent additives have actually repelled fish. So, if you believe in it, it works! :)

fishing user avatarOntarioFishingGuy reply :

I don't generally use attractant because the plastics I use (Gulp, Powerbait) already have scent in them. I have tried a couple different scents, but they have not made much of a difference. I just don't have enough confidence in them.

fishing user avatarTNBassin' reply :

I like Hog Tonic. Power Team Lures has a winner with that stuff.

fishing user avatarDavid D. reply :

I like JJ's and Megastrike. Do they work? Well, for me they do.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Another vote for MegaStrike!

Pro-cure & Smelly jelly. I like to stay on the west coast for scents, after all, I live and fish out here.

Not always. I fish Shimano, St. Croix, Yo-Zuri, GYCB, Megabass,

Lucky Craft and Kietech just to name a few non-sponsored brands.

However, I was using MegaStike long before I joined BassResource

in 2004. I think the "goo" is a GREAT product!

x2 on the Hog Tonic!  This has been the scent I've been the happiest with for soft plastics.  I use my Megastrike for hard baits like spinnerbaits, and crankbaits.

fishing user avatarCatch and Grease reply :

I only use JJs but haven't tried megastrike. I don't know if the scent from JJs makes a difference but I think it might make them think its real that 1-2 extra seconds. I use it mainly for the colors

There's a ton on the market! Pick up a couple and find "your scent".

Smelly Jelly.

fishing user avatarprimetime reply :

vegatable oil to help worms slide through grass when flipping or pitching....soak all soft baits in a tub of berkely gulp and if you buy a tub on sale for about $10-12 It doesnt matter if it is saltwater gulp or freshwater...I don't believe they change scent, that is any company who markets fresh or saltwater scented baits....I love pro cure if I want some Glow which I always thought was a scam to catch fiherman, although I knew it was good for saltwater fishing. I have discovered a Pro cure gel in menhaden and shrimp (only 2 that were left from sale) often will cause fish that are inactive to start striking, and it is the glowing effect it has since i use alot of scent and nothing beats the powerbait/gulp/trigger x in my opinion..

I would use Megastrike if I found it on sale as I have never seen a study or noticed a certain brand better than another or more importantly been on the boat fishing with someone who was killing them and the scent was the differrence.

I started using more scent after getting crushed by a fishing  buddy on out first trip a few months ago and he dipped his topwater, crank, worm, but also stuffed cottom with scent in tubes, and also added feather trailers to jerkbaits so he could get more scent..I thought it was a waste of time, but became sold when my un scented traps were getting a few strikes, but his soaked and pasted traps were bringing fish to the boat, and they were hitting his lures, so now I created the Gulp tub with big Flukes, left a few, added in some senkos and grubs, beavers etc, soak them all week, and dip them after every few casts and I am convinced it works better than using any lure without scent....

The only one I have seen work well is Megastrike.  The one that gives me a chuckle is Strike Kings Coffee attractant.

Uhh no! The only sponsor product I use is Rage Tail

Baitmate Classic with 1/2 oz pure Anise oil!

fishing user avatarOregon Native reply :

Still using the Smelly Jelly after many years.  I've always been a believer that if it gets me one more strike it's worth it.  "I believe" I've also fished long enough that I've seen days where scents will get you a few more bites.

fishing user avatarnascar2428 reply :

It's Megastrike for me. I use it on all of my soft plastics, even those already infused with scent. I believe the fish hold on longer with some Megastrike on them. That's my confidence booster..

Smelly Jelly

fishing user avatargeo g reply :

Whether they work or not is debatable, but they can't hurt. I put a drop or two in my plastic bags. I keep the boat clean that way. If you think it helps, I'm sure it will!

I've been using JJ's this year and really like it.  I do think it makes a difference.  But, I just got some Megastrike to try, too.  After watching a video of Bobby doing a demo in one of those glass truck-tanks and the bass hung on for dear life to plastics without hooks sold me.  I'll be trying it out this weekend.

For only a very brief period of time I used "attractants" many years ago, maybe for 4 or 5 months, Mann´s FS454 and also anise oil. I swear I didn´t see any difference in the catch ratio. Nowdays many swear for Megastrike or JJ´s, I´m not going to say they work or not, I haven´t tried any.

This subject is for me similar to red hooks, if you think/swear/care/believe that it makes a difference in your favor I´m the first one to tell you should use it/them, anything that boosts your confidence is good.

fishing user avatarChrisD46 reply :

BANG , Jack's Juice , Kick 'n Bass and Lunker Sauce would about round out the offerings in addition to what was listed above ...All are worthy of consideration !

fishing user avatarBadBassWV reply :

The only one I used besides megastrike, Was something that Bill Dance used to spray on his baits can't remember the name. It used to leave an oil slick on the water after you sprayed it on your bait.

Well said. That's what I use and the reasons why.

In sure all of us bass fish for the challenge, JJ's isn't a magical scent that makes you catch fish anyday of the week.

There would be no point in using it if it didn't work.  If it does attract strikes then fishing has become easier and less challenging.  This morning I just wanted to put a bend in my rod, used live bait for the first time in about 2 years.  It took longer to catch a bait than it did to catch a 30" fish, no question about it.......I didn't challenge myself today.

fishing user avatarLunker5 reply :

I use spike-it chartruese or red its garlic scented.works best for me they crush it

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

Attractant is a poor choice of words, none of them attract bites!

Bass are sight feeders or lateral lines feeders

You can not simply throw a lure out there & expect a bass 25 yards away to be attracted by smell alone.

Exactly, I think most people think attractants are just that. They don't attract a fish. They may cover up odors, But they don't attract anything. Now with JJ's it changes the color of your bait, Which may or may not be helpfull. Megastrike IMO will make a fish hang on to a lure longer, is this helpfull? I guess in some situations it would be.

fishing user avatarMike L reply :

Anise mixed with baby oil.

As good, better than some but not worse than others.

Been mixing my own for so long it's a confidence thing.

Mike

fishing user avatarBobby Uhrig reply :

I beg to differ -with you about the word ""attractant"". I have controlled data from fisheries biologist that states when using specific amino acids-Yes the ones I have been using in Megastrike for 20 years-(yes I did my homework) That fish behavior changes- Locomotor activity increases as well as feeding responses. Fish actually search for food by pecking and surfacing- Bass as well as salmonids also circled more abruptly making sharper turns- meaning they are in a "search" mode. By using amino acids you are basically chumming the area that your bait is in.So that would constitute in my book as "attractant"

fishing user avatarkickerfish1 reply :

Smelly jelly is a favorite especially for tube/fluke style baits or soft plastics that have slits for putting some scent into. Also like the less thin and runny formula of megastrike for spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, and jigs for the skirted material.

x2.  Spike-It garlic chartreuse.  It may just be a confidence thing but I rarely throw a soft plastic without it.
