Really?

The Fat Ika has been my #1 producer for a couple of years.

fishing user avatarguest reply :

Hey Both RW and Avid( sent me a pack) told me about the Ika. I caught my biggest smallie to date with it. That was on the first trip. The only 2 non *** I use are the Fat Ika, and some Manns Jelly worms. I can't wait to go back to the St Regis River, with some Ikas this year, with a scale and see if I can catch another smallie and actually know the wieght. 8-)

fishing user avatarbugman reply :

They look the same but the saltwater version has different colors. I don't see any reason why they won't work in fresh water.

fishing user avatarPopeye reply :

I bought 6 packs of Fat Ika's yesterday and can't wait to work 'em out next weekend at Otay!! I certainly appreciate the tips that RW gave everyone about them!!!

fishing user avatarPerfect Hook Set reply :

Isn't this one of those baits that are kept "secret?"

fishing user avatarmaxke01 reply :

i bought quite a bit of these hoping to follow in RW's footsteps ;))

fishing user avatarbugman reply :

I've been fishing the Fat Ika for a few years now and it has become my go to bait in many different situations. The funny thing is that most bait shops don't sell them. Dicks Sporting goods is the only store that always has them, and they only have one or two colors. I guess it's a good thing because it's like I have my own secret bait in ths area.

fishing user avatarBig-Bass reply :

The only thing with the Cabela's link is they are 5 packs...not the 10 packs that usually run $6.99...so $2.99 or whatever plus shipping isn't really that big of a deal at least to me.  Now if the 10 pack was on sale for that price, I would be buying a heck of a lot of them.  I really like the Ika though and the Bass Boys link is pretty good too.  I like Plum Crazy and Rootbeer Pepper.

fishing user avatar-ebby- reply :

i am gonna buy a pack or two but im gonna get some freshwater ones just to be sure... how do you rig them? texas?

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Weedless and weightless; skirt forward on a Gamakatsu 4/0 EWG Offset Worm Hook.

fishing user avatarOther. reply :

Listen to RoadWarrior I caught some nice bass because of him telling me about the fat ika!

fishing user avatarEastTexasBassin reply :

I bought some Fat Ikas because of RW's post about them and on my very first cast with the lure I caught a 4 pounder.  I throw it a lot these days, especially when the bite is slow.

I see you recommended 4/0 EWG Gammies. I have been using 5/0 EWG superline Gammies and my catch rate has increased. Have you tried this hook? I also have found that you have to pay attention to how the bass is taking the Ika.Sometimes I find that I have to set the hook on the first tap or she will take it to deep. Other times I have to wait for the line to start moving away befor I can set the hook.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

No, I haven't tried any other hook size, although I do fish XPoints, too.

My hook-up ratio is very high and I don't recall ever having a

bait taken deep. When I detect a stike I lower my rod tip while at the

same time reeling down quickly and then apply a "snap set" or what

is sometimes called a quick set. Because this lure is fished weightless,

fish have no leverage when trying to throw the bait. If my hook-up

ratio is north of 95%, my landing ratio is much greater!

fishing user avatarJeff C. reply :

RW is rite on with the 4/0..

fishing user avatar-ebby- reply :

anyone suggest a store to buy them from? i am planning to go get some new stuff. any store have them on hand?

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

If you can't find them close to home, they can be ordered direct:

is the kinami palm tree the same thing? http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_53865_100007003_100000000_100007000_100-7-3

fishing user avatarEastTexasBassin reply :

yes, same thing with different colors.

fishing user avatarRedtail reply :

I have had a lot of success with the Fat Ika too.  I also like the Big Ika which is a bit longer and a bit thinner.  It's like a combination senko and ika.  I rig it the same way with a 3/0 hook.

fishing user avatarCrestliner2008 reply :

Hey rw - I fish deep (20' - 40'), clear water humps alot during the summer and want to try the Ika there. I really don't need the Texas rig though; the bottom is mostly rock and sand. I fish open jigs here all the time with no hang-up problems. Ya think a circle hook thru the tentacle end (exposed) would work? Or maybe just a straight shaft worm hook?

fishing user avatarMitch1660 reply :

Do you guys fish this weightless?

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Always, weightless and weedless.

8-)

fishing user avatar.ghoti. reply :

Crestliner, for fishing the Ika deep, if it's reverse rigged, you can fish it past 20' without additional weight. I do it at Table Rock every trip

T-rigged with the 4/0 EWG hook is the way to go. That's the right size hook to support the bait. Ika's tear almost as easily as senko's. T-rigged on the 4/0, they'll usually get at least two fish per bait, sometimes three.

If you try the circle hook rigged through the tentacles, let us know how it worked for you. It's an interesting idea.

Cheers,

GK

fishing user avatarJeff C. reply :

Ebby, did you get your PM ???

----

I fish the fatties in all depths ,even rite up to shore.. ( well I have never tried it in over 15')

also have used it both directions

also Have been using a senko type worm w/ 1/8 oz bullet then switched to a Fattie and just leave the weight on and also weightless.

have caught fish all ways with this bait..

4/0 seems to be the rite hook.. but I have noticed that some brands are a different size hook even if they say the same number.

fishing user avatarBassin_Fin@tic reply :

Do you catch fish with a Senko? If you do, the Fat Ika is fished EXACTLY the same way, it simply has different action and a different profile. The Fat Ika is something most bass have never seen before.
