The chatterbaits I've bought so far come with a two-tailed trailer. I guess it's a type of tube.
Is that the best trailer to be using with it?
I've found that the original trailer works fine, but sometimes switching it up can produce more fish. Try a fluke, trickworm, swimbait, grub, craw, basically any soft plastic and see what works best on your body of water. I'd personally recommend the Zman Razor Shadz: it's incredibly durable (still using the same one I put on months ago) and since it's segmented it's action is crazy.
Pretty hard to beat a Zoom Swimming Chunk or Berkley Havoc Grass Pig for the price.
Basically any swim bait. I usually use a hand poured from a friend or some keitechs
I will use everything from creatures to swimbaits. But one of my favorites has become a pit boss rigged sideways.
this month i've had good success using as trailer:
- chatterfrog legs
- caffeine shad
- pit boss
- twin tail grub
i haven't seen much correlation -- using a small paddletail or a pit boss which is bulkier -- i've caught some small fish on the pit boss and some reasonable ones with smaller trailers.
Try using a Berkley Havoc Devil Spear. The smaller version fits on the back of a chatterbait very well and produce a ton of action.
Pitboss or Rage Menace rigged sideways, like this.
Zman Diesel Minnow
2/3 of a stick O or trick worm.
BPS Speed Shad or Swizzle Stick.
Mostly I use the Zoom Twin Tail but also use a swimbait.
Lately, I have been using a Zoom fat albert.
5 inch single tail grub or 4inch paddle style trailer.
This one but don't quote me because I will deny any involvement in giving away privileged information :
it will look like this:
But remember, I didn't say anything
5" single tail grub is my usual choice! Cheap and easy to source matching colors!
I think for me the best results are from the original trailer that they come with also a robo worm. I don't have much success with a bulky trailer.
Zoom swimming fluke and berkley havoc deuce
I didn't have a trailer the other day so i just cut a baby brush hog in half and cut vs in the little fins. Actually worked quite well.
Ive always been a fan of Keitech swing impacts but recently ive been liking the Bruiser Baits Evil Twin
You can basically use any type of trailer on a chatterbait....my preferred trailers are Reaction Innovations Skinny Dippers and Big Bite Baits Cane Thumper.
Rage Menace
Hmmm, I wonder if I could cut those Rage Menaces right down the middle and turn them into 2 dropshot baits...
Zoom swimmin' chunk, Mr. Twister Split Double Tail, LFT Live Magic Boot Tail Shad, or Missile Baits Twin Tail.
I also like the Lake Fork Live Magic Shad, especially without the skirt.
Zoom super fluke or Keitech swing impact fat.

FYI a Yum warning shot is pretty much what that would look like
For subtlety use a Zoom salty super fluke. If you think it should mimic a small swimming fish use Zoom swimming fluke. To mimic a bigger bait fish use a Gambler EZ Swimmer, and to mimic a craw use Strike King Rage Tail craw. More economical is a single or double tail grub.
Look, just stick on something you have around anyway, that you use as a jig trailer or that you flip or use T-rigged. All these soft plastics I've listed above are multi-use. That's good because if you listen to everyone and buy everything, you'll be sorry and your garage will start looking like mine and your wife or mother or partner or whatever will realize you have a problem with the bait monkey. Before you know it you'll be in Bass Rehab group therapy where you can talk about your problem but never about actual fishing. Sad, sad, sad.
I have had really good luck with a 7" powerbait worm with a few inches bit off the front of it

Who makes that chatterbait? I need some

It would look like a warning shot (they work really well on a drop shot), I wonder if it would kick well on a drop shot...
This idea intrigues me, I will definitely give it a shot!

Hawg absolutely crushed this response I couldn't agree more.
I have three bait I use the Zman Razor Shad, Keitech Swing Impact Fat (Bass Pro Speed Shad when I'm cheap), and Lake Fork Magic Shad. All are basically the same bait but all give slightly a different presentation and work at different times.
I have been doing well lately using a Zoom Swimming Fluke as a trailer.
I've had my best luck with a paddle tail swim bait. Either a keitech swing impact fat, strike king rage swimmer or bass pro/cabela's brand in a 3.75 - 4 inch size. I've heard the yamamoto zako was pretty good as a subtle presentation.
Cut the small appendages off a RI Sweet Beaver, then split the beaver lengthwise...nice subtle action that sometimes makes a big difference in results...can also be used on a Scrouger, spinnerbait, buzzbait or underspin when you don't want a real active trailer.

That is nice looking.
Honestly most of my jig/chatterbait trailers are "whatever soft plastics I use t-rigged, once the nose is too ripped up to stay on the hook". I trim them down and they get to be useful again.
Now i need to grab some white Subwoofers.Bait monkey has total control.

Goes on the back of this ~
The slim / less resistant profile in combination with the somewhat smaller (and different blade design) allows for a faster retrieve.
This encourages the bait to 'hunt' just enough to make me smile.
I can fish it through light to medium vegetation like a crankbait - without the grass fouling up the bait.
In clear water I have better results with a little speed.

For a trailer on a chatterbait, I generally don't use a paddle-tail swimbait or any trailer
with a strong signature of its own. It's only a theory, but I feel that a trailer
with a powerful thump may interfere or overpower the rhythmic throb of the bladed jig.
This notion goes back to the first overhead spinnerbaits.
It's long been believed that a single Colorado blade has a more defined rhythmic throb
than a twin Colorado spinner, which cancel one another. Again, it's basically a theory.

Reaction Little Dippers are my top choice. Speed craws work really well too

Hah, my first thought was "man that thing would be great t-rigged with a small weight, run through the sparse pad fields around here".
