Favorite Jerkbait 2024

fishing user avatarZach P reply :

Wondering what others preferences are for jerkbaits considering action, durability, price, etc. Thanks guys!

fishing user avatarGrantman83 reply :

I really like the xcalibur erratic jerkbait. Durable finish, swims true and just plain works. They are on sale a lot of places

fishing user avatarrangerjockey reply :

My favorite is the Vision 110, the best value is the RTX,  I think the best combination of performance and value is the Mcstick..

fishing user avatarCrestliner2008 reply :

Even though Pointers are a tad on the costly side, this is what I'm probably tossing 90% of the time I'm on the water - come ice out. However, I'm not convinced that a particular brand is better than another when the fish are on the jerkbait bite. More important, I believe, is the cadence of your retrieve. Only the fish can tell you for sure.

fishing user avatarOregon Native reply :

I've got more of these things than I have sense. All kinds from Lucky Craft to whatever. Have collected a lot over the years but my arm just doesn't like fishin em. I look at em on my shelves once in awhile and even have a couple in the boat but haven't gotten on this bite in a long time.

Good Luck

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

What ever one I just caught a fish on last. I go through cycles with these things. For a long time it was Rapala Husky Jerks, then it was  X-raps, then a few years ago when the Luck-e-strike Clunn baits came out it was those, then the Xcailiber EEratic shads, now I am on the SK KVD's....next spring it will probably be something else...........The perfect 10 Rouges are looking pretty tempting to me.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

Really a lot of variables on which one I choose but a majority of the time I'm either fishing a Luck E Strike RC stix or a LC 78 pointer.

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

I will openly admit that my level of jerkbait expertise pales in comparison to at least one angler I fish with on this board, and there’s a decent chance you’ll hear from him here.

Like many lures, jerkbaits are pretty versatile and can be effective in different situations and conditions.

I believe they are at their best in fairly clear water when water temps are on the cold to cool side; and that temp is relative to where you fish but less than 60 most of the time.

The list of effective brands / models is Extensive.  TW alone lists 147 different models; Overall size, Floating / suspending, rattles, shallow, mid & deep divers, and the colors / patterns are almost endless.  Another way to group them is by the “speed” of their action specifically, after or during the pause when working the bait.  The speed at which the bait rolls and then comes to stop then either hanging suspended or floating back to the surface can often times be an important consideration.

Rapala Huskyjerks and Smithwick Rogues are on the slow side.

Lucky Craft Pointer 100’s, 127’ 128’s seem to have a good mid-speed action / roll.

Rapala X-Rap runs a faster erratic path through the water column.

So that’s one way to think about this. Your results may vary.

But there’s no denying the bait’s ability to catch trophy fish.

A-Jay

fishing user avatarsmalljaw67 reply :

Floating style I like the Smithwick Rattlin' Rogue, for suspending it is a 3-way tie between the Rapala X-Rap XR10, the Pointer 100, and Smithwick Super Rogue. I know it sounds strange and I like just about all jerkbaits and I have a collection in which most will get used but the ones listed are constant producers, the Megabass 110 is a great bait and when it is on it can't be beat however in the waters I fish, others will be better most of the time.

fishing user avatarRandySBreth reply :

I still really like the Rapala Husky Jerk - I know - no weight transfer for long casts, and the paint isn't as detailed as some more "boutique" lures out now - but I still catch a lot of fish one them.
That said - I'm liking the KVD models and the store brand from Bass Pro - the deep diving smaller model sized like the 10 size XRap - 6.99 isn't too bad for a lure that you'll probably stick in a tree top 12' down.

fishing user avatarSmokinal reply :

Honestly, I'm only using the HJ. I catch a ton of fish on it so why change?

fishing user avatarZach P reply :

Thanks for all of the opinions guys. I've got a pretty good share of Smithwick and Spro and have fished them minimally until recently this winter when I've been testing out retrieves, retrieve speeds, rod lengths and choices, and then obviously different brand type. I really like Smithwicks right now but have heard phenomenal reviews on Husky Jerks and Vision 110's

fishing user avatarJKarbo214 reply :

I've had a lot of success with the Lucky Craft Pointers (100 SP) and the newer Duo Realis 120 SP.  They are both expensive but well worth the money in my opinion.

fishing user avatartnbassfisher reply :

Unfortunately for my wallet, I've really gotten into the LC Slender Pointers the last couple of years. A more economical option that I've found are the Bass Pro XPS jerkbaits.

fishing user avatarbmlum415 reply :

My favorite all around jerkbait is the vision 110 but for deeper water I love the shading 75sp or the pointer 78

Same here with the Rogues as a close 2nd. Both are resonably priced and for me, they are the only two that have suspended perfectly out of the box with nothing done to them.

fishing user avatarBass Menace reply :

I also like the Rapala Husky Jerks. We have a 3-spot minnow colour here that does some serious damage.

fishing user avatarTRYTOFISH reply :

I like the Mc Stick. Works well for me.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Dwight is probably our "in-house" expert, especially for those of us that prefer brown fish!

He recently posted some of his criteria and personal favorites. My takeaway was diversity,

not so much color, but action and depth.

My personal favorite jerkbaits are the Megabass Vision 110, and 110 FX. However, I seem

to do better with the Lucky Craft Pointers. This year I spent a lot of time with the Smithwick

Rogues which resulted in making this brand my best producer. Funny how that works!

I think you also need to have a few XR6 X-Raps for days when the fish are VERY aggressive.

And I'll add another brand that has impressed me, the McStick.

can anyone give an opinion on Luck-E-Strike's jerkbait, and if you have used them and like them, which colors most represent perch, bluegill, crappie, or baby bass? thanks

fishing user avatarMacP reply :

Rogues for me.  It's funny, I don't fish Husky Jerks like a jerk bait, I fish them with a steady retreive and pop them occasionally.  They kill on the rivers for trout.

They're a good bait, especially for the price. The hooks are a little light so it's a good idea to replace them. We've had good luck with the french pearl, pro blue, and secret night colors around here.

I'm a big fan, if they casted a bit better, I'd probably throw them most of the time. Picture of that color?

I think jerkbaits are like golf clubs, there is a time and place for different ones. I like the rogue and similar ones for really cold water, and the vision and pointers for somewhat warmer conditions, but I'll always let the fish tell me what they want.

I own most every color of the RC sticks in both the full size and small size. Like I said earlier, they're one of my favorite baits. Like cbass said, change out the hooks, you'll have to do it after a big fish straightens them out otherwise. French pearl, secret night, pro blue, herring bone chartreuse, and cosmic shad are my favorite. The herring bone color probably looksthe most like a baby bass, purple flash would be my choice to imitate a bluegill or crappie.

fishing user avatarVABassin'14 reply :

As a few people have said, the Xcalibur Eeratic Shad is an absolute great lure. This is my favorite jerkbait that I have fished. I love throwing a jerkbait and spend a fair amount of money on them, but  I just can't make myself spend $15+ for a single lure when I version half the price produces as well as the eeratic shad does. Also, I have never had much luck with the Rapala X-raps. I know a lot of people on here love them, but me not so much.

fishing user avatarhookset on 3 reply :

I must admit, growing up we threw Husky Jerks, Bomber Long A's, Rougues etc. Two years ago a Dick's Sporting Goods nearby had a clearance bin full of Lucky Craft Pointers and Slender Pointers for, get this, $3.64 each! I cleaned them out and scored maybe a dozen.

Well....forward to present, the lures just flat catch 'em. I've tried some of the others when they are biting the Pointers, but it's really no contest.

Tell you what, if you ever see them priced anywhere close to what I paid, grab every single one that your wallet will stand.

fishing user avatarZach P reply :

Yeah I've recently looked into the Luck-E-Strikes and will probably invest in a good amount of these when I get a chance.

I wish I could find Lucky Craft's for so cheap but don't see it happening anytime soon lol. I've also never thrown the bomber long a's but might have to try a few of these out also.

DHJ12 Rapala in glass perch has put more smallmouth in my boat than any other jerkbait I have ever fished. Period.

The Cosmic Shad and Pro Blue have been my top two producers this year.

Megabass Vision 110 if money is on the line but I also don't mind the Rapala Husky Jerks, though as others have said they do suffer from castability issues.

In my entire collection, I don't have a deep model.  I was thinking just last month I need to try them.  I guess this will convince me!

My favorite and best all time producer has been the HJ12 in Tennesee Shad.  That goes for both bigmouth and smallmouth.

That's funny - down here I like that color in the 10 size for the brown fish, too. I also am a big fan of the Tennessee Shad in the 12 size, but maybe just because I throw it more. Like someone else said, funny how that works out.

fishing user avatarPrimus reply :

My top 2 would be Lucky Craft Pointer 100 & Ima Flit. That said a lot of different jerkbaits work well and I've had a number of different baits end up being the hot bait for the day.

 Interesting!

Even with 10-lb braid, does it really get down 20 feet?

Roger

fishing user avatarbigbill reply :

The Rapala Orginal Floater is still one of my favorites. You can reel it slow, jerk it or let it sit any way we present it she'll work.

The rapala orginal minnow in the countdown in blue & yellow jointed we can drop it till it stops them get jiggy with it. The bass love this jointed lure. I use this off a low bridge were I know a hole or pocket in the rocks is. There's a bass there every time I hit that spot. I'm sure it will work when the bass are suspended under the boat too.

Any floating crankbait can be used topwater. In the low light as it gets dark I put on a Norman thin N in chartreuse killer. Cast it out let it sit and just twitch it.

During the satellite I use the bomber FAT A or model A in redapplecraw and pause over the open weed pockets and twitch it. It pulls everything out of the submerged weeds.

The rapala glass shad rap. I just cast it out and reel it slow.

With spooks I hold the rod tip down and reel it slow. Making the spook run under the water. Once it's under the water I twitch it making it dart every which way and erractic.

Don't forget the scents

Roger it consistently hits 17-20 feet. As always each bait runs a little differently in action and depth. I caught my first couple of 5lbers & my very first 6lber on that exact bait  about eight years ago. They get hit the most when they are at depth & suspending without hardly any forward motion. The pause right after a long pull does it best. My buddy Roy caught this 7-1oz beauty on that same bait. The glass perch looks very much like a perch & we all know there are millions of those swimming in lake erie waters.

That is one BEAUTY of a smallie. That right there is why you fish jerkbaits

fishing user avatarthehooligan reply :

Favorites for me is the mb vision 110, regular and diving mb flapslap, the lc pointer 78, and evergreen escarda.

The bait that always works for me is the old yozuri pins minnow though, ive nailed really nice trout and bass on that one...

fishing user avatartallen316 reply :

LC Pointer... Yeah they do cost a bit more but imo they are worth it. I purchased one last year and caught more fish on it than I would have expected. I would highly recommend them.

fishing user avatarMunkin reply :

I noticed you are from Maryland so where are you fishing? On the average day I carry about 40 different jerkbaits to get dialed into the one they want. Overall Lucky Craft baits in ghost minnow work best around here.

My top 5 baits in no particular order:

LC pointer 78sp

LC slender pointer 97mr

Xcaliber XS4 (This was discontinued but came back as the eeratic shad everyone has been talking about)

Smithwick suspending rogue

Team Diawa minnow 1091

Allen - currently I don't own a boat but I fish a private very large pond (borderline small lake) in Anne Arundel County. It's about 6-7 foot at it's deepest and contains a good population of bass ranging from ounces up to 7lbs as the largest I've caught. In addition I know that there is a healthy population of crappie and small minnow with several catfish and carp as well. More than anything I'm just trying to work on becoming a better jerkbait fisherman

fishing user avatarCJ reply :

In that situation I think you should try some Rapala Husky Jerks and Smithwick Rogues. Both of these are really good baits and are like $5 each so you won't be out much if you lose them.

I don't know if you tried them but a soft jerkbait should really work there. Zoom super flukes in albino and pearl white are about all you need.

Thanks and I actually previously had some Smithwick and recently picked up some husky jerks and a couple of mcsticks also. I just need the pond to thaw in the coming days or to get a boat first haha
