Another frog thread: SPRO 2025

fishing user avatarTokyo Tony reply :

Hey guys, I remember reading an article on frogging that said lighter-colored frogs were generally better. I was at Dicks the other day trying to get to $50 so I could "save" $10  8-) and picked up two white SPRO frogs. Cut about half of the rubber legs off of one and dotted the underside with a brown sharpie. In the past, I've almost always gotten green or brown hollow-bodied frogs because they look more realistic to me, but I'll tell you - fishing a pond that I had been fishing all week with a green Snag-proof frog, I totally dominated the fish yesterday. They seemed to prefer the new frog color/style greatly.

On a related note, I was amazed at the hookup ration of the SPRO frog compared to any other hollow frogs I've used. The strikes weren't huge, but I landed 6 fish over about a two hour period, and got 7 strikes.

One thing I don't like about the SPRO, however, is that it takes on water every single cast.

Do you guys find that lighter colors generally work better, or could it have been a fluke?

fishing user avatarBadKarma42 reply :

I am becoming new to frog fishing, so I don't have much to add to your question.  I have been getting the SPRO as well.

So far, in one use, I had a turtle blow up on the frog and completely destroy it.

I am curious as to the effectiveness of a frog NOT fished in the traditional frog areas (slop, pads, etc.).  The places I fish don't have the traditional frog areas.

I am wondering how well/poorly they may work in fishing the banks.

fishing user avatarTokyo Tony reply :

I've read (and seen on TV) that some guys fish them in open water with success, but to me it just doesn't seem like the ideal lure choice for open water. When frogging, most of my strikes occur shortly after my frog reaches the edge of or openings in the cover I'm fishing (pads, slop, etc.). I don't get many strikes through the slop, as fun as that would be. I've been meaning to experiment with skipping these lures under docks as well.

Try fishing the banks with them though, what do you have to lose? I like throwing them at laydowns, but usually there are weeds around too...

fishing user avatarBadKarma42 reply :

That's along the lines of what I was thinking.  Thanks.

fishing user avatar.dsaavedra. reply :

i've got a snag proof tournament frog that i would get a few blow ups on, but the fish would ALWAYS miss. they were always like six inches away from the bait. there were very few times when they actually had the bait in their mouth. and on these times, i waited till i could feel the fish, and went to set the hook, but i could not hook the fish for the life of me. it was the crappy hooks on snag proof frogs.

recently, i removed the double hook from the frog and added a large single gamakatsu hook. im hoping this will increase some hookups for me.

i would like to try some spro's. i might pick one up next time im out if i see them.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

I have missed more than I have caught on frogs.

I have been throwing the Scum Frog and the bass hit it but they don't take it.

I have the SPRO in white and green and plan to throw it this summer.

I also have the Romba that looks like a big frog but it is a crankbait and I want to see how it produces.

fishing user avatarTokyo Tony reply :

I'm telling you, the SPRO is unbelievable with hookup ratio. I'm gonna throw it after work today too (one hour and counting  ;D ).

How about colors though? Do you guys also prefer light colors or what? Do you think it matters that much?

I think it probably doesn't matter that much, but I'm gonna keep sticking with light colors and see if my success continues.

fishing user avatarsoccplayer07 reply :

what kind of retrieve are you guys using???

fishing user avatartritz18 reply :

I have the natural green spro frog and I used it for the first time yesterday and it was incredible. for about the first 10 cast I got about 8 hits. I'm not the most experienced frog fishermen so I couldn't land them, but next time I know I will be able to them now that I got the feel of the frog. I'm using a slow to medium retrieve with the aggressive pop. The fish seemed to hit right after the frog popped. I got more hits along banks with trees and other plants along them than around lily pads. I'll be using the frog again wed afternoon so I will let you guys know how I do.

fishing user avatarDawson reply :

Ok out of all the lures on the planet, I would pick a scum frog over anything (or a spro). I discovered frog fishing just a few years ago, and since, it is all I want to do. I will share what I have learned, and hopefully it can help some. I am not claiming this to be the gospel, however I am claiming that in my experience this is what I have learned. First and foremost, I do not believe that color matters. I have at least 5 of every color made, and I always rotate through them and it makes zero difference. I do believe that when fishing topwater of any kind, from a bass perspective looking up towards the sky, they see merely a shadow. Secondly, the chance of catching a bass on a frog when the sun is bright, is vastly reduced. I am sure you already know this but a bass cannot see the water surface well when the sun is glaring down, (try it in a pool sometime you will see) so the chances of them seeing it are less, and if they do see it and go for it, the chances of them missing it by a mile are good. And last but not least, and I learned this the HARD WAY.... when they hit it, if you immediately try and set the hook, you will miss 7 out of 10 at least. When bass eat frogs, believe it or not, often they will bite down on them, then exhale them out of their mouths for just a second, then inhale them back in. If you try and set the hook immediately, you are pulling when the frog is out of it's mouth and you miss. I was taught by my uncle, that when they hit it, wait 1 full second, then let em have it. You will land 9 out of 10. It is hard to do because you will be excited to set the hook. But just try it 1 time... let em hit it, wait a second, then set the hook. You will have him.  As far as spro's taking on water, mine do too, every time. Good luck!!  :)

fishing user avatarDawson reply :

Oh and I forgot to mention, a twitchin' bar is handy when frogging....

I think only Daiwa makes reels with the bar... and with frogging, I think the cast is the most important part... if you can, cast it just barely on the bank, or on top of the moss, watercress, lilly pads, whatever. Then ease it off into the water, and thats when they usually hit it.. up in the "scum"!!

fishing user avatarneBassin reply :

I like lighter colors for sunny days and then I go with black on overcast days.

fishing user avatargobig reply :

I have noticed with the spro frogs that if you pop them hard they do take on water. I walk the dog with them more than I pop them.

They are a bit tricky to learn to walk (not near as easy to walk as a spook) but when you do learn they have great action and dont take on water the same way. The key is not to over power them.

As for open water they work great! My understanding is that they were designed for open water with Dean Rojas being a major contributor to the design.

"Owner hooks will help you put more fish in the boat..."

If the fish are blowing up on or around the frog, but not hitting it try this.  After the blow up wait a second, give a few twitches, and they'll come back.  If they had it in there mouth, bit down and spit it, it's probably game over for that fish.

Don't mean to be a jerk Dave, but I really like snag proof's Bobby's Perfect frog.

I used to be in the spro camp, but I gave the two away that I had after trying Bobby's perfect frog.  Same gammy hook, but the bell and softer body won me over to Bobby's side.

fishing user avatarMan?orAstroman? reply :

Last night I was fishing a cheap, old Wally-world frog on the top water. This thing looks like a joke; there are no front legs, the color looked completely ridiculous, and the back legs didn't even move! I really wasen't expecting much, the whole lake was dead as far as top water activity. I threw close to a grassy bank and moved the lure along the bank when *SMACK*. A 2 pounder nailed it and I actually hooked him and brought him up! Not bad for a cheap Wally-world special.

fishing user avatarmike bat reply :

i love the spro frogs ... they flat catch fish ... as far as colors go the olny color i look at is the belly color .... the way i see it the belly color is the olny color the bass see ... i always use a frog with a yellow belly or greenish belly ... they seem to get more bites ,,, well for me ... also the spros never seem to take on water untill you catch  a few bass .... i was told by a buddy the smaller size spo will take in water right outta the pack .... i never fish the small one olny the normal spro frog //// if this happens try glueing the nose back on the hook ... this works great as long as there are no holes in the the frog ( other than where the hooks come out the bottom) ... i use not glue but a fast drying slyicone made for fish tanks ... it works really well for me ... you can get a tube of the slyicon at wally world for a few bucks .... it will pay for its self ... i dont do repairs on the lake i wait till i get home ,,and give that frog ample time to dry .... i always keep 8 frogs in my box or so ,, just in case ... also id recomened not cutting the legs ,,, reason i dont cut leggs is i want that frog to have a big profile in the water .... it will walk fine with the legs on there ... i like the action better with the legs to tell ya the truth ...  also before you toss a spo slime it up with some mega strike ... this will help with hook sets and save the frog some damage .. instead of the bass pulling the nose down the hook the frog will slide through the basses mouth better on a hook set ... hope this made sense ... also do not be scared to toss a spro in high sun ,,, like at noon or the middle of the day ... the sun and heat will cause the bigguns to seek cover ,,, slop , grass , pads and so on ... i find it easer to catch big bass in the middle of the day ... in fact most of my bigger frog bass have came around noon ...

fishing user avatarDuma reply :

correct me if im wrong but believe the spro frog was made by design to take is some water in order to increase casting distance...ive never had the frog really sink due to the extra weight..... i love it because i fish slop with heavy gear and without the extra weight itd be a waste of my time.

fishing user avatarwarmer reply :

i prefer dark frogs

fishing user avatarmike bat reply :

it was designed with one hole in the bottom .... so the air is trapped in the frog ... it shouldent take water on at all ... the spro has a really nice barreling and rolling action on the water .... imo some water in the frog will hinder this action .... altho i have fished them with a little water and still got bit

fishing user avatarBassin_Fin@tic reply :

I gotta squeeze mine out after every cast(spro). Some are better than others, and some just plain out sink.Wont stop me from using it though it is a killer lure.

Use a litte silicone to plug the hole a little more. I found out that the hole cannot be plugged all the way as the body wont compress on the hookset when I melted mine shut with a piece of worm tailDUH!

fishing user avatarMicropterus salmoides reply :

Issues with the Spro Bronzeye that I've read on different forums have prevented me from buying them. Primarily, the inconsistency in softness and sinking problem. Local tackle shops carry them, but they typically don't have enough of a color to search through to find a good one. And buying online is not an option since I can't pick and choose.

It sucks because I've read positive experiences when they do work. I wish Spro would address the issue and improve upon quality control. It's been well over a year since I first heard about the problems.

fishing user avatartennwalkinghorse reply :

I have used Spro frogs and have not had any issues with them as of yet. As for cutting the legs how short do must of you guys cut them and do you think it helps that much?

fishing user avatarRob G. reply :

Spro's are good frogs.  Swamp Donkeys are also good.  The best deal on the market in my opinion are the Cabelas Pro Fisherman Frogs.  Very, very similar to the Spros.  They come with one leg trimmed approx 1/3 shorter than the other and they sit butt down in the water a bit.  This enables one to fish it like a twitch bait.  Very subtle topwater action that you can skip into the nastiest brush.

fishing user avatarmike bat reply :

if your frog is taking on water glue the nose of the frog back on the hook eye ....  unless you have other holes on the frog ,,, aside from the hole on the bottom where the hooks come out ,,,, its the nose .... i see a few guys sinching the knot down by useing the frog to tug the knot down ... bigg no no ... when you do this you pull the nose of the frog down the hook shaft breaking the water tight seal ...
