I seldom watch Jimmy Houston because he annoys me, but I was flipping around the channels Saturday and saw him and his guest fishing the Yumbrella rig...so I watched for a bit. Then his guest got the rig hung up and Jimmy said to him that he got his $40 lure hung up and started joking about how people will start going in after them. I thought it was funny that he's trying to promote this lure and comes right out and says something like that. I'm sure that comment turned off some newbies that don't know much about the rig. Maybe I'm the only one....but I thought that was kinda funny!!!
Saw part of that show myself, what annoys me is when they don't identify the lake they are fishing. If you're going to do what is basically an infomercial, please let me know if it is a public or private lake. If it's a public lake I might be more inclined to buy your product, fishing it in a private lake gives it very little credibility and I am much less likely to buy.
Sometimes the honesty is refreshing, and funny. I'm sure it would have been edited out of the show if they thought it would tick off the sponsor. But Jimmy's got a point about people going in after them at some point. That's a lot of $ to lose on a snag.
if you had to money to buy a $40 lure, you had the money to loose $40.. on the other hand id probably be jumping in for it anyway.
it would be funnier if his guest on there was like "oh man i snagged the fence again"
I also watched that episode. That lake is Jimmy's private lake. At one point you can see his cabin in the background. It is the same place he filmed his BTS commercial along with some others.
i havent seen the episode i like jimmy though and id go swiming for the rig if i snagged it up iv been known to wade in after a simple ball head and mister twister lol mostly cuz its my last one and im miles from my car wading the river or bank.

wait a min MR TWISTER... is it the one that gives off the little bubbles? i had one of those, just one though when i was a kid i got it with a bas fishing video and i swear the biggest bass i ever caught was on the first cast with the thing and on the second cast i lost it. haven't been able to find em since, might have been first cast luck but i was like really thats it one fish and gone never tried it again since. i should have jumped in for it.

Thanks, I'd figured as much, the bass catching was just a little too easy. To all you tackle manufacturers out there - if you want to impress me with your lures fish catching ability, then get out on a highly pressured public lake and show me what you got.

Jimmy films alot of shows at his Twin Eagles ranch and he usually says so. I've gone swimming after a Mattlures hard gill before.
Bad thing is even a Plug knocker is unlikely to get a stuck A-rig back

I have swum after $5 lures, so would definitely get wet for a $40+++ rig...
My oldest son won't accept losing any lures when there hung up. He and my youngest son went fishing. Of course he climbed out on a fallen log to retrieve his hung up lure. He showed up at home all wet. My youngest son was still laughing at him. He fell off the log and went into the water while trying to get his lure back. He does this all the time too. But its the cheaper stuff that he is trying to save.

I was nicer; I waited until I got back to the launch and placed mine in the trash recepticle.I think a 'bama rig MIGHT work if you are in a situation where swimbaits work (if there IS such a situation that is), but for us guys who fish Texas and Carolina rigs, crankbaits, spinners, and jerkbaits it is pretty much worthless:Bunch of big black wires, unless the fish are blind that will turn 'em off;Makes a big "sploosh", when it hits the water, sorta like the sound your outboard makes when you forget to tighten it and it falls off the transom; You gotta have arms like Popeye to fish it for any length of time.On the other hand it might work for trolling...of course thats illegal in a tournament...but if I could get I.M.HaungUp to reel it in REAL SLOW while I troll down the bank...hmmmm..This is all just my opinion, of course, for what its worth. I am certain the 'bama rig will revolutionize fishing as we know it and will soon be illegal just like:Gitzit tubes;Charrerbaits;Hard bodies jointed swimbaits; And the hula hoop...
I think you have made these comments or something just as absurd already.
We're killin' ';em on the Rig and everyone else is, too!

I have had 100% success retrieving The Rig with the Bass Pro lure retriever.

So I stand corrected...Now what did I do with that slice of Humble Pie?
I gave up on Ole Jimmy. On one episode he did an ad for an automatic fish feeder, then on another episode I caught a glimpse of the feeder swing into view just before they cut to another scene. Then I started paying more attention to the back grown, same stuff show after show. Ole Jimmy lost all credibility with me.
Question 1: am I correct in thinking the 'bama" rig is just a plagiarized open water trolling rig used with a casting rod?
Question 2: Has anyone noticed any stress fractures in their rods after prolonged casting of the 'bama' rig? That's a lot of weight to heave.

Amen, RW...
honestly, I really stopped watching that show on a regular basis when every other word out of his mouth became "US reel supercaster".

I agree. I have no desire to watch him or Bill Dance or whomever go out on a private pond full of big, hungry bass. Teaches me nothing.
Traveler, yes it is just a "castable" umbrella rig.
IF the proper rod is used to for the weight, then no it won't affect the rod. That goes for any presentation.

Dude, I don't know what your problem is, why you feel the need to continue to attack me. You may very well be "whacking em" with the A-rig but IN MY EXPERIENCE this isn't the case, and I think that's the experience of many others. I think the thing has some serious design flaws. If you disagree fine but lay off the personal attacks - I haven't done that to you or anyone else here.
I'd think a moderator on this site would work to discourage that sort of behavior, not instigate it.
As for the rig: We'll see if anyone's still using it a year down the road.
I'll be using the A-rig a year from now, but the rest of you can put it down, please don't use it. It's too hard to cast, gets hung up too easy, too expensive, and it's really annoying having to spend so much time catching and releasing big bass. And I really hate it when I get 2 or more on at the same time.

LOL, LOL,,,, OK you can have it....
I hear if you paint the rig red, the fish won't see it.
