Fluke newbie wanting advice 2025

Thinking about giving some flukes a try for LMB. I see the flukes, super flukes and some with and without salt. What should i start with? What are like the 2 or 3 most popular colors to try?

I'm partial to the Caffeine Shad... I use a pearl bait fish color and fish different retrieves rather than different colors.

I use the salty super fluke most of the time. Shad color gets used the most. Followed by pearl, and green pumpkin.
Usually fish it weightless on a 3/0 or 4/0 heavy wire ewg hook.

Zoom Salty Super Fluke and Yamamoto D-Shad get the most used from me. White, and Shad color is all I want.

Zoom super salty fluke, baby bass color and sprayed grass. I go through packs of these, $2.50 for a pack of 10 at my local Wally world.

These fluke post have been popping up everyday it seems ???? my advice to make it simple fish it like a t rigged stick bait. Super flukes are my favorite.

White pearl and watermelon seed salty super fluke. I also use bubble gum, and baby bass, but the first two colors are my go to colors.

You're going to want the super fluke, not the fluke. 4/0 EWG is my go-to, but jigheads work as well if you're trying to get it down in the water column. As far as how to fish it:
1. Giving it soft but quick twitches as soon as it hit hits the water. This will keep it on the top of the water and present a more subtle walk the dog.
2. Allowing it to sink to the desired depth and working it like a jerk bait, just with softer twitches. You can pause as long as you want between twitches, this is probably where most of my strikes occur.
3. Dead sticking the fluke for 10-20 seconds at a time, hop it, then repeat the process.
4. Target casting. Just get the fluke right on top of your desired target and allow it to sink all the way to the bottom. Give it a few twitches then work it back to you.
4. Carolina rigged with long pauses.
5. Dead sticking on a wacky rig.
6. Rigged backwards on an ewg it will fall away from you, if you're bad at skipping or the overhang is too close to the water to skip this'll let you get a foot or two under the cover.
7. Chatterbait trailer.
8. Never done it, but I've seen a lot of videos with folks fishing them on underspins in cold water, particularly for spots. We don't have that scenario down in Florida but it might be something to consider if you do.
As far as location, flukes basically work everywhere, but I feel like they really excel in grass where other subsurface lures may not be able to get to, and when targeting schooling bass. They're also one of the easiest lures to skip, so I give them the nod pretty often for dock fishing/getting under branches. Flukes are also pretty good as a follow up lure if you miss a top water strike.
Watermelon red is by far my favorite color for these, and for whatever reason flukes and trick worms are the only lures I ignore the conventional method of black/blue or junebug in dirty water, watermelon in clear water. As long as there's at least 6" of visibility I'll be throwing watermelon red, anything less and I probably wouldn't throw a fluke. Pearl and Arkansas Shiner are both solid colors as well I just don't feel the need to carry all three colors.

Awesome technique and I never go out without a Yamamoto DShad rigged up. It can be fished in soooooo many different ways. I don't need to weight it since the DShad is more dense than most of the others. Just takes a little patience to let it get deep. I have dragged it on the bottom of Lake St Clair like a tube, twitched it on top of the weedbeds on the Potomac and worked it in all of the water column on lakes. Proven Producer. I rig the DShad weightless on a Gamakatsu 4.0 EWG hook.

I have a box full of colors but watermelon red or watermelon seed are my go toos. If it is very bright sun I may also throw the one with gold sparkle. Its called something ? bream. I also use red shad in lower light conditions.
I catch at least 90 % of my fish on it just dead sticking. 2nd best method for me is pulling it over and through grass.
I use a 3/0 wide gap gammy hook rigged weightless.

Fluke on a scrounger has worked well for me too.

In the other brands besides Yamamoto, salt increases the fall rate.

I absolutely enjoy fluke fishing and I am willing to Branch out and try different flukes. I want to fish with the best.

It is purely opinion. I like the DShads because of the weight and the fact that they are made out of the same material as the Senko. To me it's the perfect fluke style bait. I'm sure others have their favorites as well.

Well I'm a creature of habit, zoom flukes work for me, so I haven't changed. But if there's a better bait that works better I'm all for trying it.
6 out of 10 in a pack of zoom flukes works like there suppose to, other 4 usually are to erratic and just twist up. I save those for dropshotting, but I'd rather all my baits work out of the pack not 6/10.

I have used the zoom salty super flukes for over 15 years, and have caught hundreds of bass on them, the biggest one was app. 8 pounds.
A friend gave me a couple packs of the yamamoto flukes and the bass really hammered them. 2 packs isnt enough to make a judgment , but I was impressed.

Bought a pack of Super Flukes today. Gonna try them with a 4/0 EWG to start. Do you rig them up with the "belly bump" facing up or down? I would have thought down but I just saw a YouTube video where Casey Ashley talked about rigging it where it faced up and using the groove in it as a weed guard. What say you?

Belly down, it gives it the action zoom designed it to have.
You can rig it multiple ways and experiment with different retrieves, but since your just starting out on using them, learn the basics first, then try experimenting with different setups!
Hope you have a blast fishing them, I sure do!

I wonder why he would rig them this way then. Will have to play with it I guess. Is this a decent colder water presentation or too much action and should only be tried when it is warmer and fish are more aggressive?

Care to explain your reasoning behind your opinion? I’ve never used them personally. I use the original zoom super fluke and have used caffeine shads which are totally different than flukes imo.

@pauldconyers I use them weightless in summer, spring, fall.
In winter when it's colder here in the south I'll dropshot them or keel weighted hook.
But flukes have a place in my boat year round
