Ever Caught A Bass Or Fish W/ A Lure In It's Mouth??? 2025

fishing user avatarghost reply :

I haven't but have lost a few to some bass.  I did catch a steelhead trout with 3 hooks in its back, that's as close for me.

What lure did a bass or fish have in its mouth when you caught it?

fishing user avatarriverbasser13 reply :

Baby bass senko and arkie u head jig; which I had lost the night before in the same spot. It was a nice three pounder living in a laydown. I was glad I my senko back and got that hook out of the basses belly so it could swim on!

fishing user avatarFishes in trees reply :

That has happened to me a few times over the years.  Once just a random snelled hook that the fish had swallowed and my crank bait hook caught the loop.   Once, I got my 6 lb line snapped, lost my jig & eel combo - retied and cast to the same area and the same fish hit a similar lure again, not more than 3 or 4 minutes apart.

Another time I caught a fish with a Bagley shaky head jig stuck in its mouth.  As I reflected on how weird that was, I realized that I was in a similar area where I got a shaky  head snapped off a couple of weeks previously.  I'm pretty certain that no one else who'd fished that lake recently hadn't ever heard of  that brand of jigs - so I got my own jig back - a few weeks later.

fishing user avatargulfcaptain reply :

Caught a bass I lost when I was 16.  It hit a roostertail and broke me off on some standing timber.  Couple days later hooked a bass on the same color roostertail and when i landed it, my other rootertail was in the other side of it's mouth.  When I lost the fish I thought it was much bigger.  To my suprise it was only 2lbs, but I swear it when it broke me off it was atleast 5+.

fishing user avatarCatch and Grease reply :

Foul hooked a bass with a long top water popper and broke him off at the bank, came back like 2 weeks later and caught him again on a spinnerbait while this big popper is sticking on his side.

fishing user avatarFisher-O-men reply :

I heard that a fella named Peter caught a fish with a gold coin in its mouth!  ;)

fishing user avatarRSM789 reply :

I have never had that experience with a bass, but have caught many catfish with a hook or hooks hanging out of their mouth.  Most of the hooks tend to be pretty small, so I can only surmise it was from kids fishing for bluegill off a dock with their Snoopy poles when Grandpa catfish comes along and spools them.

I also caught a catfish once that pooped out a rusted hook, right on the floorboard of my boat.

fishing user avatarSiebert Outdoors reply :

I've caught a couple with hooks in their mouths but never a lure.

Another fish.

fishing user avatarEvanT123 reply :

I caught a nice smallie on a top water. After I took the hooks out the lure drop out and caught on something looked in the fish mouth and it was gut hooked with a live bait hook. I used the hook removal trick and got it out. Hopefully he lived another day.

Something different I got snagged on someone's line pulled the line in and there was a big minnow on the end. Unhooked him and let him swim away.

fishing user avatarRatherbfishing reply :

YEARS ago, I was razzing a friend because he needed to change his line-which was looking pretty shabby.  Anyway, he hooked and broke off a better than average fish.  Even though I wanted to say "I told you so", I refrained from doing so and we kept fishing.  After awhile the fishing died down and I decided to fish a night crawler under a bobber.  After a few moments my bobber went under and I hooked, fought and caught a pretty respectible smallmouth.  In it's mouth was my friends Rooster Tail.  I just kinda smilled and handed it back to him.  He was like, "Yea yea, I don't wanna hear it."

fishing user avatarfishballer06 reply :

Never caught any fish with a plug in/on them, but I have caught a few with a hook in them.

I caught a salmon over the weekend with 3 different hooks in it. That was a new record for me.

fishing user avatarfishguy613 reply :

caught a largemouth that had an old discoloured senko in its mouth, no hook looked like he'd been holding onto it for months

fishing user avatardesmobob reply :

I was fishing a T-rigged worm this weekend and missed what I thought was a small fish, and lost the worm.  I put on another different brand and color of worm and cast to the same spot.  I hooked about a three-pound smallmouth and when he was right next to the boat, he spit out my other worm.  It sunk before I could grab it.  :-)

Over the years, I've caught a few fish that had swallowed hooks and the shells hanging out of their mouths, but never a lure.

Tight lines,

Bob

I got a crazy story...

I was fishing a popr last year and a fish broke me off and took my lure. Few days later I am back at that spot and I am fishing the same area where I got broke off. I wasn't paying attention and my popr was just sitting there. I hear a strike look up and there's ripples around my popr but I can still see it. I reel it in and to my surprise the popr I lost few days ago was attached to one of my hooks!! My buddy was with me the day I lost the popr and I sent him the pic and we both couldn't believe it.

Another time I was fishing a lipless crank bait and I'm reeling it in and notice a piece of fishing line attached to my hook. Then a few feet behind is I see a jointed Swimbait swimming along lol. I looked it up and it turned out to be a Kanan Swimbait and this particular one retails for $20 not a bad catch at all!

fishing user avatarPinoy_Basser reply :

We where fishing for grouper on a pier near a beach a few years back.

The pier was a quite known for its quality grouper sizes.

My buddy got a good sized grouper with 9 circle hooks around its mouth (10 if you count his).

fishing user avatarComfortably Numb reply :

Caught a three pounder with two identical green Senkos and hooks in its lip. Other guy should have used heavier line LOL

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

Had a buddy break off on a smallmouth last year first thing in the morning. Went back to that spot in the afternoon and I caught it with an almost identical bait and got his bait back for him.

I broke a monster off in a tournament at LOZ several years ago. Told a buddy where and on what for his tournament the next week. The night after his tournament he texted me a picture of the 8lb 2oz bass he'd caught with my football jig still in her mouth, I almost puked.

fishing user avatarOzark_Basser reply :

I caught a smallmouth with a bluebird in its mouth one time.  So if you use live (or dead ) blue jays as bait, then yes, yes I have.

fishing user avatarPersicoTrotaVA reply :

I've never found anything out of the ordinary in their mouths.  I have cut catfish and bass stomach open before and found many interesting things.  I think the most interesting thing I found was a fully rigged steel wire bottom rig leader, weight, hooks and all in the stomach of a 2lb catfish.  I have no idea why he ate the whole thing, It must have hurt going down...

fishing user avatarmoguy1973 reply :

I was trout fishing once at Taneycomo and was using a rooster tail.  Super clear water so I could see the rooster tail coming in as I reeled it back.  If you've never been to the upper parts of Taneycomo, you can see a lot of fish usually when the water is low.  One of the fish started freaking out about 4 feet from where my rooster tail was coming in and then I saw my rooster tail shoot off in a different direction without any fish around it other than the one that was freaking out.  Come to find out I had wrapped the rooster tail blade around a tippet that the trout had broken off.  The line was wound around the blade enough that I was able to land the fish that had a small #16 or so fly in it's mouth.  I still have that fly.

fishing user avatariceintheveins reply :

I've caught bass with various soft plastics in there mouth and even a couple that puked up a soft plastic and I removed it.

I was in my boat at the upper end of Taney when I spotted an indicator that appeared to be snagged. Hoping there was a good micro jig or nymph on the end, I motored over to grab it when it plunked under   Took a little wrangling but I finally chased it down and handlined in a small rainbow with a T.J. micro jig in it's mouth. Ended up catching a bunch of fish on that jig under the same indicator.

I've had that happen with a channel cat at a local lake with a bobber the size of a small beach ball too.  :laugh5:

fishing user avatarRobert Riley reply :

Several years ago my friend caught a log and snapped his line in frustration. A few minutes later, I caught the same log. Turns out it wasnt a log, but a 5 pounder with his beetle spin still in his mouth!

The look on my friends face was priceless. (And I still have his lure to this day)

fishing user avatarhatrix reply :

A couple years ago we were fishing this pond at a party. I made a dropshot with a spinning rod that was available. I had a gulp minnow on it and something came and grabbed it hard and started running. I knew instantly I was screwed cause I could feel it pulling so hard. Well I never checked the drag and my line broke. Like 10 mins later one of the girls i forget who someones wife/girlfriend have a decent fish on. It was a catfish that probably went about 8-10# and it had my red hook in its mouth. It was also on the other side of the pond now. The pond is was about 7-8 acres and now it was on the total other side. It was crazy cause I just hooked its face like 10 minutes ago and now its on the total other side. I didn't really think fish bite again so fast. It was not like a miss or almost hook type deal. That hook was in it good "being a catfish and all" it was like it broke my line then instantly swam to the other side and chowed down on some hotdog like I never even hooked it or it didn't matter to it.

fishing user avatarG8RBob reply :

Two quick stories:  First, I lost a hook on a log.  The next time around the pond my partner threw his Texas rigged bait and his hook went through the eye of my lost hook.  He brought them both in.  Second, I lost a crankbait on the west wide of a 40 acre lake.  The next day I was fishing the east side of the lake.  We pulled up next to the grass, looked down and there was my crankbait.  It had traveled probably 500 yards.  What are the odds?
