Techniques For Working A Fluke 2025

fishing user avatarTexfisherman reply :

Hey, gang.

I'm about to add flukes to my arsenal of tackle, but am inexperienced with them.

What I'm looking for is a video that focuses heavily on the actual retrieval of flukes, i.e. how to work them.

Any links would be appreciated.

fishing user avatarEvanT123 reply :

Fast or slow maybe a twitch twitch maybe not. Fishing flukes is basically my favorite way to fish. You gotta try different methods and let the fish tell you.

fishing user avatarStingray23 reply :

OK, I'll help you out. This is one of my favorite techniques. I use a spinning rod and reel. My setup is a 6'10" Med. action, fast tip. I use 10lb fluorocarbon line. I texas rig a Zoom super salty fluke(5.25 inches) with a 3/0 Gamakatsu EWG hook. Make sure the fluke is straight after rigging. Cast out and start twitching the rod at a downward angle. Vary your rhythm. Let the fish dictate your speed. I like to fish it very eradically and fast. To me, it makes all the difference. Do be afraid to really jerk the rod to the side during retrieval. If the fish are aggressive, hold on to your rod, they will slam it hard! You can obviously fish a fluke many different ways, but this is the way I fish it and it works for me. Just this past week, I caught 40 bass in 4 days with just this technique. And I wasnt fishing all day. Only 3 hrs a day. Once the water starts to cool off in the 60's, they will really start biting the fluke.

fishing user avatarmikey5string reply :

Weightless for sure. Texas rigged and twitched, jerked and deadsticked. You want them to dart in random directions. You'll see the action when you first throw them. You can experiment but I've found that the jerk- pause retrieve is best.

If you want to fish them deeper you can slide a finish nail in the body of for even deeper presentations, a Carolina rig. It is important hat the fluke can move freely for best effect. I think there are better baits for a jig or Texas rig but you can't beat a fluke for a weightless jerk bait.

Get the pearl color. It's the best all around color IMO.

Keel weighted hook would work too, wouldn't it?

I think a weighted hook would kill the action of the fluke. IMO, It would not allow it to dart erratically from side to side. Keel weighted hooks work best for baits that have "built in action: like a curl tail worm or swimbait.

Keel weighted hooks an are awesome alternative to a t-rig. They allow baits to fall horizonatlly rather than nose first. Something with action like a rage craw or ribbon tail worm are deadly.

Ahh, I see. I didn't know that. Thanks.

I wish I had a link to share, but any video you'd watch would likely only give you one or two ways to present this great bait. My advice is fish it according to the fish's activity level. It can be fished like a Spook, jerk bait. in tandem, weighted, drop-shot, etc. and those are just way to present it by itself. You can also use it as a trailer on a spinnerbait or jig.

This time of year, I like to swim them on a weighted hook a couple of feet below the surface popping the rod tip occasionally. You don't get the darting, side to side action you do when just jerking it, but these things are great minnow imitations and minnows aren't always darting around.

If you watch a small baitfish, they do suddenly change direction, "hover" in place and dart short distances. I think this behavior is more common than swimming in a line for an extended period. The erratic action also seems to make the bass key in on the fluke as a single fish isolated from the school.

IMO there are better options for a swimming retrieve like a paddle tail swimbait or something with action when moved like a curl tail grub. You can fish flukes any way you want but imo, they are designed to work best as a weightless jerkbait.

The smaller ones are great drop shot baits. The super fluke is the best jerkbait. Try wacky rigging one, they are great "dying" fish imitation.

Also, the smaller sluggos are another awesome option for weightless jerk baits

fishing user avatarStingray23 reply :

What makes the fluke irrestistable to fish is the erratic, random movements. Its has no set pattern. It drives fish nuts. Thats why they strike it so hard. If you work it fast and hard enough, it will break the surface. Watch for the explosion of the bass. I love fishing a weightless fluke. There is nothing like it. When the bite is on, there is nothing like it.

fishing user avatarJake P reply :

The more erratic the better IMO. 2 hard twitches then a good 10 second pause, 1 hard twitch then 2 soft twitches then a 7 second pause etc etc. Have fun with. Flukes are hard to mess up when fish are actively feeding. I think the worst thing you could do would be to just cast and retrieve. 99% of my fluke strikes come at the end of the pause just before I start to move the bait again. Good luck!

fishing user avatarClackerBuzz reply :

great advice. keep some slack in ur line when you pop it...like a spook. it gives it that crazy good action. its about the ACTION and PAUSE. trick is finding what combination they want that day. have fun with it

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

Flukes are a very prolific bait for a variety of fish, this is how I fish them regardless of species. First said, if I'm fishing open water I prefer putting them on a jig head, if fishing a weedy area t- rigged with no bullet weight, as said having the hook perfectly centered is very important. I pull the fluke with an arm motion a few feet then reel up the slack on the pause, that's when I get a lot of strikes, I'm using that fluke as a subsurface lure.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

If the water is 5 to 10 feet or so I like to throw it out weightless and just let it sink down to the bottom. Sometimes I will twitch it all the way back in, and sometimes I will just dead stick it for a while and move it slightly. You have to let the fish tell you what they want.

fishing user avatarfishking247 reply :

i always fish them on a 3/0 or 4/0 worm hook texas rigged weightless. i jerk them with the rod tip down 2-3 times and then pause for 5-7 seconds and repeat.

X2 on this. Flukes I feel are best when fished weightless. my .02

fishing user avatariceintheveins reply :

I fish flukes pretty slow, acting like a dying baitfish. I throw them out, and let them sink to the desired depth. Lighter line (8 - 10 pound) test and a 3/0 - 4/0 hook will let you fish the depths with a fluke.

After it sinks to the desired depth, just give it a twitch or two, and let it sink 3 - 10 seconds. Vary the amount and intensity of twitches, and the length of pauses. The longer you pause, the deeper you can work it. Hits are almost always on the pause, and generally you will see your line move away either slowly or quickly. A general rule of thumb is the fish slower in deep water, and faster in shallow water. The random darting action and the slow sink is generally the key to catching fish on this deadly lure.

fishing user avatarshanksmare reply :

When bass are unwilling to chase a spinnerbait or crankbait I will use a Super Fluke. I fish it Texas rigged on a 3/0 1/8 oz H & H Flutter Hook or BPS Vertical Drop Hook.

I let it sink to the bottom and then I give it a couple of twitches and let it sink to the bottom again. I repeat this the length of the cast. I fish from shore so my cast is usually nearly parallel to the bank where possible. The flutter hook allows the bait to exibit a side to side swimming action when sinking.

I carefully watch the line for any signs of a hit.

The use of this rig covers ground a little faster than a worm or jig presentation (at least for me).

Using a Super Fluke I caught 3 bass (small to 3 lbs.) this morning in a couple of hours. I tried jigs, lipless crankbaits and spinnerbaits with no luck prior to using the Fluke.

fishing user avatarclayton86 reply :

another way I like to fish it frequently is nose hooked on a jackall iShad jighead or a weighted wacky hook but nose hooked on a fluke its killer. Another top producer for me and you never see people mention is I tie a 14-20" leader to the hook of my jigs then put the fluke on texposed work the jig like normal and just let the fluke do its own thing absolutely clutch on heavy pressured days on the lake.

fishing user avatarSPEEDBEAD. reply :

Weightless is my favorite way HOWEVER, a weighted hook (unless super heavy) will not kill the action of the fluke.

If you're not fishing them deeper than shallow cover or weeds, you are missing out.

fishing user avatarclayton86 reply :

for keel weighted hooks on the fluke I like the arkie ones from Walmart they are cheap and dirty but work great in some super light weight sizes also

fishing user avatarmikey5string reply :

Sometimes I will stick a finishing nail in the body of the fluke to give it a faster fall.

if i wanted to fish them deeper I would use a carolina rig or drop shot.

In that case, you are all but guaranteed to kill the darting, side to side action of the bait.

There is a reason Falcon Hooks makes a weighted Jerk Bait hook. ;)

Carolina rigging wont kill the weightless action because the fluke is still weightless. It will still dart around just closer to the bottom. The length of the leader will determine the range that the fluke will dart. I usually use at least an 18" leader. The super fluke is a great carolina rig bait.

Drop shotting will kill the action but youre really not looking for a lot of action with a DS. The bait is mostly stationary. I use the smaller fluke with no belly slot for drop shot.

fishing user avatarBayoubassin8 reply :

Rig it Texas rigged weightless with a red widegap hook. Try to perfect your rigging to make the bait "walk the dog" about 6 in under the surface. This takes some skill but when you perfect your rigging, you will gave an increased catch rate because of it's darting action that the bass can "predict" the baits next movement. (easier prey)

fishing user avatarsenko_77 reply :

8lb flourocarbon, 3/0 Gamaktasu EWG, Zoom Super Fluke in smokin shad, 8"-10" leader, and a Spro swivel.

Jerk, pause 3 seconds, jerk jerk, pause 3 seconds. Violently effective in semi-clear to clear water. My god I catch so many bass on this setup it's unreal.
