dose anyone know a good rod brand was using favorite rods but they are trash
I really like Kistler and Powell. Got a few of each. Daiwa Tatulas have treated me well too.
Almost anything will be better then "favorite" LOL
Gloomis
St Croix
Megabass
Dobyns
Shimano
Daiwa
Kistler
Phenix
I pretty much use Gloomis, Megabass and St Croix the most.

Lots of nice rods around that price point. Especially if you take advantage of sales.
Dobyns Fury line. For a little more you can get the Sierra line. Shimano Curado rods are around that price point. Fenwick Elite Tech. iRod Genesis II.
Just to name a few. All much better than Favorite.
Spinning or casting?

Powells are great and they are on sale on tackle warehouse for 104 or less.
Dobyns Fury line, Dobyns Colt line, Shimano SLX rods. A lot of great rods in that price range, go handle some at your local shop and figure out which ones fit you best. To me rods and reels are not something you buy online, but that is just me!
Falcon and bass pro shops Johnny Morris rods.
Dobyns Fury
St. Croix Mojo Bass
I like my Fenwick HMGs. Dobyns Fury line is highly rated, but I've never handled one. Just received 2 used iRod Genesis II rods yesterday and they are very nice looking rods. Light. Not used a BuCoo or Lowrider, but I have a few other Falcon lines from the Original to the OG Expert and they are all nice rods. Especially the OG Expert. Used OG Tatulas. Love mine. Not used the new ones, but they also seem to be favorites of many. Have an older Powell Endurance that is excellent, but it is my only experience with Powell.
Yup. Lots of good options in the $100-$150 range.
Almost forgot. Ark rods are on sale at TW. Only have one but liking it.

I picked up 2 Furys this year...haven't had them on the water, but 'bench-testing' looks real good.

Only have one Dobyns....704CB Glass. Like it a lot. Wouldn't mind having more Dobyns.

Ya - I have a 702SF for finesse and a 705CB
St Croix and MegaBass. My rod arsenal is pretty much split down the middle with those two brands.

I’m sure favorite has good rods. I fished with one my buddy has and it seems nice.
I like St. Croix, they have treated me well and I have no reason to change.
If I felt. Compelled to try another brand I’d look at ALX, Kistler or Cashion. Shimano and Daiwa offer good rods too.
I like St. Croix a lot. In your price range the Mojo Bass series of rods are very good.
Many of my rods were on sale. Several of my refurbished/used Dobyns Sierra models were direct from Dobyns for $100.00 shipped to my door. All of the used Dobyns rods I have purchased were in excellent condition and you couldn't even tell the weren't new. You have a lot of brands/models to choose from under $150.00. You could even possibly put a nice combo together under $150.00 if you find good sales. Tackle Warehouse does have some sales on the Ark Rods & Powell rods that would be nice rods also.
I have used all of these models listed below, these rods can be found anywhere from $80-125.00
Dobyns Sierra/Fury
Falcon BuCoo
Daiwa Tatula
I started using St. Croix rods 30 years ago, as the years have gone by I find they are better and better and continue to lead the industry. I have had a couple replaced but only after over 15 years of use, and in the case of those rods ( pitching flipping and Salmon and Pike fishing) more abuse than use!
I have tried a few quality rods from other manufacturers over those years, some I was happy with at first, but all are closet queens today and the only thing I will spend my money on is St. Croix! Today I pick rod blanks, and have them built.
My suggestion would be St. Croix, no doubt! But they offer dollar for dollar rods in all categories. They also offer both quality American made rods,,,, that I would highly recommend, they have Premier in your price range or for a little more their Avid series, probably their best bang on a budget for a high quality rod. The Premier is also a very nice rod, light with great sensitivity and durable, with some models on your price range.
But for a quality rod assemble overseas with their American made blanks, the Mojo Bas, Eyecon, and Triumph all fal in your price range. My money says if your leary and not sure what to spend, these rods will make a believer out of you, and sure to lead to stepping up to their finner quality blanks such as I mentioned.
Bite the bullet and splurge for an Avid, if you want unbelievable,,, the Legend series are unbelievable, till I started fishing them I never knew you could feel fish breathing before they hit!
I own many rods in that price range. Of the ones I own, I prefer St. Croix, Ducket, and Fenwick rods. I've never owned a Dobyns rod (as I've never found one locally), but have always heard good things.
I will say that I've had issues with the guide inserts on the St. Croix Premier series rods, but no issues with Mojo or above. I have 3 premiers and all are quite old (I'd guess 15 years) and I've lost one insert on two of them. Don't know if it's a build issue, a me issue, or just bad luck.

Depending on your budget......
St. Croix
G. Loomis
Fenwick
In general, the St. Croix Avid 7' M Fast will do just about anything.
Lew's TP-1 Black Speed Stick
or
St. Croix Premier

Yep, a bit more than your $150 budget but the Avid is an excellent choice. I own several and much prefer them over the Mojo Bass.

Wow.... I totally missed the $150 part. I should have read a little more of the thread.... Getting old sucks...
Falcon lowrider or bucoo
At the $150 price point I would recommend Daiwa Tatula or Phenix Feather. Fantastic rods - light, crisp, versatile.
St. Croix makes a quality rod but I would only recommend Medium Light or Medium. They get heavy and poorly balanced above that IMO. I fished them exclusively for 20 years, but after reluctantly trying some other brands I sold all my MH and H AvidX and LTB’s. I still have and like my 7’1” Medium Fast Mojo.
I use Denali
I've got 3 Diawa Tatula's in that price range I like.
Glad I found this thread! Really looking at purchasing a Dobyns fury 7'. For the Dobyns Fury line, is the MH or H/Fast action a better all-around casting rod? I do mainly throw big worms and jigs.

Get the heavy. They run a little slower than other brands.

The 704 (7’ Heavy/Fast) for sure. It’s more like a Medium Heavy.
I love my ALX rods, but for anything under $150, I would go with the Dobyns Furys.
I have a friend that recently purchased his first casting rod which was the 703. He loves it. I just sold him my 704 and my 703 spinning rod. With those 3 rods, he has everything covered for the way that he fishes.
Uribe Riverside Series rods. Strong, sensitive, light weight, and quality components.
Picked up a couple Falcon Bucoo Sr rods this winter and really like them so far. The Daiwa Arid X is a great rod for well under your price range. If you have an Academy close, their H2O line is really nice and also well under your price range. The Okuma TCS is an awesome rod that is normally right at your budget but you can find them on sale all over right now.

Sure does. So do the medical bills associated with it.
Since nearly every rod on the market will have been mentioned eventually. Curious..can you let us know which one you ended up purchasing and why?

Most of my rods are Daiwa Tatulas. My jerkbait and topwater rod is the St. Croix Mojo Bass Topwater because the mediums in the Tatula lineup at the time had no true medium rods that fit the bill, and my finesse rod is a St. Croix Avid X 6'9" ML/XF.
I got my oldest son a couple of Dobyns Sierra rods and they are also fantastic rods and my youngest son has some Mojo Bass rods and they're also really nice as well.
Any of the above will run you between $130 and $170. There are also many other rod manufacturers out there that make quality rods at a similar price point and many more that make better rods (and sometimes for less money) than Favorite as well, but this is what I have experience with.
Daiwa Tatula
I'm always surprised in these threads that more people don't recommend Shimano rods.

Will definitely go with the heavy then. Thanks folks

The Shimano Poison Adrena, Zodias and Expride's do get a good bit of love on here and G. Loomis is a Shimano brand. I used a couple of their Sellus rods a few years back and liked them just fine.
Fishingmickey
Irod...they make some great rods. Genesis II runs $149.99..

How sensitive is this rod for jigging compared to the Premier? And is it worth the premium over the standard model?
I find the TP1 Black is a great rod for jigs. I like the Vibration Transfer Ring for help with bottom contact baits. It gives the advantage to the TP 1 Black over the Premier.
compared to the Premier it has a softer tip and is a lighter rod. Compared to the regular TP1 it has a different blank. I feel a noticeable difference in weight and sensitivity between the two. Enough to say I won’t be purchasing another regular TP1 Over the Black in the future.

I've always found St. Croixs to be stouter, heavier and thicker than most of the rods I've handled.
How does the Tp-1 Black compare to the Custom Speed Stick Lite HM85? I think the latter should be more sensitive based on the HM85 over the HM50, and I can find it $30 cheaper.

I wouldn’t know I don’t own a custom speed stick lite. If you can find one $30 cheaper go for it. I rarely if ever buy fishing gear at full price. If no sales show up on my favorite rods, like the TP1 Black then I will wait for a good percentage off sale around Black Friday.

I don't think Shimano's rods are as popular as their reels, but I will say that I've got my hands on some Curado and Zodias rods, and they seem like quality rods.

If you can find the Custom speed stick lite for cheaper then that's a no brainer between the two, it's the upper model. As far as their action, they are a little all over the place. The Lews labeled as jig rods should be very similar to the St. Croix Mojo Bass Jigs/Bait rod overall, just maybe a little heavier. The Lews rods labeleed as worm and spinnerbait are more like a Mojo Bass medium with the exception of the "topwater" medium, which is a true medium.
I have never really had a balance issue with the heavier Mojo Bass rods with a lighter reel, but they are surprisingly light so I could see how with a heavy reel that may be a little awkward.

I figured it was the higher model but it looks dated compared to some of Lew's newer rods. I decided not to blow the bank on a new rod (was looking at the Daiwa Tatula Elite) and found this cheaper than a Dobyns Fury which I would have purchased.
I'll send it back if it's more HF than MHF which is what I was looking for.

Yup, if you find it's too stiff, send it back and get the spinnerbait rod instead, which should do the trick.
I checked my order I purchased the magnum jig model, which is Mod-Fast, not Fast. I'm hoping it's not a broom stick.
