I'm thinking about upgrading my medium light finesse combo, I've been getting more into using an overall lighter setup and liking the results. It's versatile to where I can switch species and several techiques. It's pushing to be my next focused purchase.
So what's your next technique combo going to be?
My next set up will either be a shimano compre 7'2" dropshot rod, with a pflueger president, or a 7'2" shimano Compre M/XF casting rod with a Daiwa T3B for light jigs... (shimano rod with daiwa reel i know it is weird but it just works)
Mitch
I would like to get another Shimano reel and a longer mh rod. At least one that is 7' long. That would be my dedicated pitching and flipping rig.
Beetlespin Rig
To be more specific, as soon I get my Calcutta 50 back from DVT it will go on the Loomis MBR782 that the big brown truck dropped off yesterday.
Dx 746 to upgrade my champ 736
Dx 704 to go with my new t3
I just sold all my Powells and am upgrading to Ducketts! Just ordered them yesterday! Very excited!!!! Gonna pair them with Lews Tournament Pros.
Shimano Cardiff 300a on a Okuma Guide Select 7'11" Heavy. I'm going to start throwing some big baits.
My next combos are going to be St. Croix Rages - HF and a spinning MXF
Another Cumara/Tournament Pro combo. This one, a 7'2" MH and spooled with 20lb flouro to fill the gap between the heavier 7'4"setup with 25lb, and the 7' with 17lb.
Swimbait rod. Maybe a 7'10" H/XF BPS Extreme or a 7'6" H/XF Carbonlite, or possibly the Fenwick Aetos in 7'9" H/XF. Whatever I get I'm probably going to put a Revo S on it.
Ordering a Denali Jadewood 7'11" Flipping Rod for throwing the Alabama Rig. Will put either Garcia Pro Max or Lew's Tournament Pro with Sufix Braid
I think personally I'm going to start with a jig setup, I have my eyes on a Dobyns Champion 734, with a Diawa T3 Ballistic 8.1:1. After that I am between getting a swimbait combo, which would most likely be a Okuma Guide Select with a Shimano Cardiff or Calcutta, or a spybait setup, which would probably be a Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth and a Shimano Symetre or a Stradic.
I don't know.... Really, I don't. I actually for the time being think I am all set..... Bwahaha..... Okay, so I can't even say that with a straight face. Probably going to be a Fenwick Elite tech smallmouth rod, if it's a spinning rod, it will be paired with a pflueger president spinning reel, and if it's a casting rod, I think I have to try a Lews reel.
I got 2 set ups I'm looking into getting. One is a Denali Kovert 7'8" flippin' rod paired with an old Quantum burner 7:0:1 that I have. The second is a Denali Kovert 6'10" medium crankbait rod that ill mostly use for jerkbaits. II'll probably pair it with a Lews Speed Spool.
I need to buy another cranking rod. I'm pretty set on a Dobyns 705cb glass which I will probably pair with either my Lews TP or TSS. From there I'll either be looking for a Dobyns Champ or Champ Extreme in a 3 power, more than likely, with another Lews TP.
I've got two combos that I'm not completely satisfied with.
1) I'll likely upgrade my big swimbait set-up to an Okuma EVX Musky Rod so I can triple duty that rod for musky/catfish/swimbaits/arigs. 7'6" HF Rod rated for 2-6 oz baits paired with a 6501 Abu with 65LB braid. Should be good for all those applications.
2) I've got a St. Croix Premier that doesn't have a reel attached. I don't have a dedicated cranking reel, so that's next. I need a lefty 5.X reel. Probably a Lews BB1.
Just received a Fuego 6'10" MXF spinning rod. Will be putting a Supreme XT with braid on it. Going to try light jigs and tubes on it. However, as you know I seldom use a spinning rod. Picked up a used 7' ML Crankin Stick. Will be putting my other Carbonlite on it with 6# mono. My first rod designated for cranking.
Bought a 7' MF Prodigy from the same seller. He said it would make a good cranking rod. Since I already had the same rod, I will be mounting a Black Max 1600 reel with 6# Siege on both. However, one will have upgraded bearings while the other remains stock (both will have Carbontex drags). Will give me a chance to see how much difference bearings can make with gear that is as close a match as I can make it without having to switch reels on the same rod.

Glad you mentioned catfish. I don't fish where a 5.x reel would be of use, but I do fish where decent size (for my area) catfish can be caught. I have an old Abu 5001C from around 30 years ago that I never learned how to use at the time. Now that I can use b/c reels with a modicum of success, I will have to mount it on a 7' Heavy (that had been advertised as MH ), and see if any fun can be had at my local river. They tell me 35 pounders have been caught there. Been close to 50 years since I went after catfish.
A custom 70's 4600C w/6 b.b.'s on a first rendition Cumara 7'2" MH for throwing horny toads and big worms.

I've seen some pigs here, we'll have to go out so I can show you some spots.
Shimano Sahara or Pflueger President to use as a multipurpose setup. Not sure what rod I will pair with it yet, but not going to be anything over the top. I have quite a few spinning setups, but they're all cheap.
Not in the market, have what ever I need and want to catch anything I target.
Dobyns Champion 736 to replace my 735.
Daiwa Tatula 100hl for shallow/mid cranks.
Not using these together but I am purchasing together.
I might get a swimbait combo for next year. Probally a Calcutta and dobyns rod.
Geez Snook, thinking like that could throw the tackle industry into a deeper economic down swing.

Any reasoning for stepping up in power!?

hollow body slop/pad fields. don't get me wrong, the 735 has a lot of power and I probably can get by w/o the 6 but I don't do much open water frogging to justify keeping it just for that. When I'm frog fishing the river and it's backwaters, i'm more often than not hucking way back into crud or walking frogs through pad fields which means I have to drag fish through slop or pull them through pads. The pads on the mississippi don't mess around. I just feel a little underpowered at times. I was even considering the 805 but I think i'm set on the 736.
The 736 is surely your rod then...I'm holing to upgrade to the 746 and double it up

Don't be an ole stick in the mud. You can afford anything you like.
Treat yourself to something new, top-end and exotic. I bet you would
REALLY enjoy something special! I'm thinking MegaBass or Loomis
NRX rod and a Stella 2500FE. I know you like braid, but spool this
rig up with Tatsu #6. If you can land a 10-12lb Florida Strain largemouth
on this gear you will forget about saltwater fishing from the shore.
I impulse bought a Stella 2500FE over black Friday, once it arrived I decided I needed a better rod for that nice of a reel, so I have a Loomis 822 SYR on the way now.
Chronarch ci4+ on a 7'3 ***. Mh
I'm not exactly sure which rod yet but it's going to be either a Shimano or Loomis for the Metanium XG I picked up a few weeks back. Also I'm going to need a rod for a "tuned" Abu 5601 C4 I'm currently building. Still waiting on the last few parts to arrive, hopefully early next week, then all I have to do is assemble it (which is the fun part to me) and it'll be ready to go. It's navy blue so I'm almost positive I'm gonna go with an Abu Volatile to match, just have to decide between the two I have narrowed it down to.
Also I'll either pick up a new Curado after the Classic (if the rumors are true) or a Calcutta D. Love the way the D series Calcutta's look.
My next combo will be an all around set up. I'm getting a Dobyns Coalition Weapon 734C (7'3" Heavy Fast Action) and pairing it with a Lew's Tournament Pro 7.1:1 reel. I will primarily use this for jigs, texas rigs, spinnerbaits, swim jigs, and buzzbaits.

I'd like to get into tuning abus, as I have a few and love them. Where do you find your stuffs? I've seen some things on Ebay.
I want a Dobyns dx 746 with a 7.1:1 PQ.
I need a deep diving crankbait set up. I havent decided on a rod yet but the reel will be a 5.2:1 PQ
Dobyns 705cb Glass (on its way) and a Chronarch Ci4. That's the plan any how.
Replace the Champion 734C that I never should have sold in the first place and going to be pairing it with a Shimano Metanium XG
Daiwa Tatula 6.3:1 on a iROD Genesis II 7'4" MH
Daiwa T3B on a St. Croix Rage 7'1" M
Just bought a stradic ci4 1000 and a duckett 7'ml for light drop shots and mojo rigs.
Lew's® Speed Spool® Tournament Baitcast Reel (6:4:1) with The Dobyns Champion Series 704CB (7'0").

There are a TON of places to source different aftermarket parts from. Just do a simple Google search and you'll get plenty of info. I have to warn you though, it gets addictive really fast.
Dobyns 795MLSB topped with a Cardiff 301A for swimbaits.
Megabass Orochi XX 7'0 shakey head spinning rod with a Stradic CI4+ 2500 series reel. This will be my dedicated hair jig outfit. It will also be used for the occasional shakey head and tube.
7ft6 carbonlite heavy action and a lews tournament pro, revo or chronarch

I appreciate the recommendation and that's a really nice outfit, I may buy something like that when I slow down and start taking it easy. At 68 I'm still young and healthy enough to challenge myself with the likes of juvenile tarpon, jacks and permit on light spinning or fly. Not that I don't enjoy bass fishing, it just doesn't take center stage over these fish for me. I will always bass fish, but will always target inshore salt species first.
I wanna try the new tatula rod and reel.
im getting two set ups in a few days which will be a 7'1 MH *** paired with a Lews Tournament pro for jigs
My second will be a okuma guide select 7'6 H with a cardiff 300a for swimbaits
I'm going to try my hand at building rods. Just ordered a sc3 7'0mf and sc3 6'9 mlxf spinning blanks basically got a two for one deal with some broken blanks to practice my wraps on as well. I'm going to try using tennessee handles with fuji alconite k- series guides. With a 2500 and 1000 size shimanos on the rods.
I don't need much, but there's always room for a good jig rod. Might be getting a new centrepin rig this winter, but that's for trout.
i have several of my next combos planned out. Im gonna pair my newly won shimano clarus crank rod with a bps pro qualifier 6.4-1. A spinning pro qualifier in 6.1-1 on a 7' carbonlite ML(for very light texas rigs, dropshots and other various light lures). A pflueger president on a rod yet to be picked. 90% sure im gonna get a bps tourney special BC combo in 7.0-1 with a medium heavy rod. Lastly an abu garcia black max 2 combo for general purpose and as a backup. Tax return time cant get here fast enough.
Been thinking NRX 895 and a Metanium
probably going to be a dobyns 705cb with a shimano antares 5:6:1 and sunline reaction fc for squarebills
St Croix LXS 6'8"MXF with Shimano Stradic
For my next reel i want to get a morrum, for my next rod i want to try either kistler or dobyns.
