all purpose line 2024

fishing user avatarLEWITH reply :

I need a line for my baitcaster that has a medium fast rod.  I need it to be multi purpose, becuase ill be using jerkbaits, lipless cranks, squarebills and topwaters(not frogs).  Was thinking about just getting 12lb berkley trilene XL.  What are you thoughts for a line that could cover most those situations?

fishing user avatarFishinthefish reply :

I'd use braid with a flouro leader with it honestly. 20lb smackdown to 10lb flouro leader for all under water applications and straight braid for top waters.

fishing user avatarjimf reply :

I think that would work, but I'm a dinosaur and still use mono for everything.  I've tried the other stuff and I just don't like it, or trust it, or I'm too stubborn to change, or something.

Personally I use XT more than XL.

fishing user avatarTurtle135 reply :

I would recommend Trilene XT or Trilene Big Game over the XL version for a baitcasting reel. If you take a look at the diameter for 12 pound test XT and Big Game (they show this on Berkley's website and on Tackle Warehouse) you will see that XT is a thicker line.

Berkley XT 12 pound test: .015 inches

Berkley Big Game 12 pound test: .014 inches

XT tests out with a much higher break strength than what the package has. Personally I use XT 14 and 17 pound test on my baitcasting reels. I like the 17 pound test down on the Tidal Potomac River where the water is almost always off color and there are plenty of obstructions that can damage your line.

Just my suggestion. Get a spool of 12 pound test Big Game and try it. It won't break the bank and if you find you need to use heavier line move up to the 15 pound test.

fishing user avatarFishes in trees reply :

IMO - there is no such thing as an all purpose line.  Choose which like will work the best for the purpose you will use most often, and accept the compromise when you use the rig for other purposes.

For me - jerk baits are a spinning gear thing.   Lipless cranks & Squarebills - abrasion resistance is a priority.  Lipless cranks are likely to be fished around vegetation, so a line with less stretch where I can give the bait a rip when I feel I've caught a some vegetation is important.   Square bills for me generally get thrown around woody/brushy cover so Abrasion resistance is a priority - how much a line stretches or doesn't is less a priority.   Top waters - like Pop'rs or Sammies - I prefer a floating line.

I know this sounds like 4 different rigs and for me it is - which gets back to the original advice which is too choose which line will work the best for the application you use most often and accept the inevitable compromises when you use the rig for other techniques.

Now for a line opinion - I avoid Big Game line at all costs.    I'd advise everyone to avoid Big Game line.   No matter how cheap it gets at Walmart, I won't buy it.  If they paid me to take it, I would pass.  Over the years I've had one too many bad experiences with Big Game.  I wouldn't even use it to hang picture frames.  (If you are hanging picture frames, use the right tool for the job and get a decent quality flexible wire )

I use sunline mono and I really like it.

I used Big Game 12 lb for everything on my bait casting outfits for about 30 years with a few exceptions; big swimbaits and finesse spinning. Still use BG 12 lb for crankbait applications and buy it in 1/4 spools. Excellent all around use mono. Higher end mono would be Sunline Defier Nylon and use this for my swimbaits.

Choose between monofilament or braid with a leader in my opinion. I use almost all 12lb Sufix monofilament being that my fisheries are clear.

fishing user avatarnew2BC4bass reply :

Try McCoy Mean Green, Silver Thread AN40 or Excalibur, Izorline XXX, Maxima Ultragreen or Yo-Zuri.  If looking for better abrasion resistance...and don't mind more memory (use a line conditioner liberally), then try P-Line CXX or Izorline Platinum.  Big Game is another line some have said has good abrasion resistance.  I don't normally fish were I need to worry about that.

fishing user avatarLEWITH reply :

I was thinking possibly a copoly line but was scared it wouldnt be good with topwaters like walking baits and poppers?  I don't even know a good copoly brand... im so out of the loop when it comes to mono/copoly lines.

I agree with Fishes in trees...  If your inquiring about copolymer lines now, a lot of people fish using either Yo-Zuri Hybrid or P-line CXX.  I tend to use braid for most of my fishing.

fishing user avatarfishnkamp reply :

For all you mentioned P Line Cxx in 10 pound test would work. I recommend you do several things. First add a line conditioner  like KVDs from Bass Pro, or go get a bottle of Reelsnot.  Periodically, just  before you go fishing stand the rod up and walk out the line/ go back to the rod end and using a rag and steady pressure walk the line out pulling the line straight.  It helps with line management. I do this maybe 3 or 4 times a year with all of my reels that are not filled with braid. You  can add some line conditioner too help clean the line after you get the memory out.

By the way 10 pound test P Line CXX in moss green breaks at about 23 pounds.

fishnkamp, will PLINE CXX work ok with topwater or is it like fluoro and sinks to much which would hinder my topwater baits action?

Thanks,

LEW

fishing user avatarfishnkamp reply :

The short answer is yes the P Line CXX is a copoly that floats.

I have a friend that is one of the best anglers I have ever spent time in a boat with. He runs his own site, He is on the water about 3 days a week or more. Here is his list he actually uses for his fishing. I have watched him go testing lines for the last 5 years. He and his pro staff have been honing in on this for some time.

Go here and read his list. I also recommend you spend some time reading some of the other forum posts and just quickly scan down through some of the "fishing reports'" from the main page.  He is one of the best teachers of this hobby I have ever met. He also catches incredible amounts of big fish. His site is baybass, com  and the link to the list is here

Good luck this season and let me know what you think of his site.

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

Trilene Big Game.

fishing user avatarillinifan4152 reply :

My recommendation would be Mccoys Mean or Xtra Clear CoPolly. Awesome line for most applications from topwaters to reaction baits. I have even used it with bottom contact baits with success.

fishing user avatartander reply :

Sunline Super Natural mono, cheap and some great line.

fishing user avatarJDNKC reply :

If I needed one line I would use Seagaur invisx at 15lb or the new rippin in 15lb for mono.  Both are great setups and will work for most applications.

fishing user avatarjbsoonerfan reply :

12 lb Sunline Super Natural

Technically speaking, every line material is best suited to some specific niche, so compromise is inescapable.

Based on my particular modus operandi, the closest thing to an all-purpose line is Sufix 832 30-lb braid.

A very svelte line, 30-lb Sufix has a diameter of 0.011" (11/1000"), the equivalent of Stren 8-lb nylon

fishing user avatarcraww reply :

Yozuri hybrid in 12lb test has been the best all purpose line for me for close to a decade. Three double digit fish. I use it for topwaters, rattle baits, jigs, Texas rigs, etc..Without any issues with breaking offs, abrasion, etc. People will tell you lime conditioner doesn't matter on hybrid- but in my experience liberal amounts the night before does matter.

fishing user avatarWIGuide reply :

If you go with the Berkley Trilene go with XT instead. It's was developed for baitcasters and XL was developed for spinning reels. Not that you can't interchange them, but XT is better suited for the job you're looking at.

fishing user avatarchattooga_ basser reply :

Another vote for yo zuri hybrid, I fish #12 on most of my combos and have been very happy with it.

I've used it for topwaters  from buzz toads to super spooks and floating worms and flukes.

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

I would go with xl fluorescent blue . That visibility is a game changer for me . Its also a thinner diameter than xt . Maybe thats why xt is tougher  because it is bigger .

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Generally, I recommend P-Line CXX in 10-12# size.  I'm currently testing Seaguar Rippin' Mono.  So far so good.

fishing user avatarTim Kelly reply :

I'm a big CXX fan too. Does the Seaguar seem similar John?

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

12 lb test XT is listed at .015 inches thick . 17 lb test XL .015 inches thick . This is from the Berkely web site .

fishing user avatarFryDog62 reply :

The two I would recommend are either Yo-Zuri Hybrid or Trilene XT - 10 or 12 pound test.  The two lowest stretch lines besides braid (yes, including fluorocarbon).  I use YH for bottom contact lures as well as topwater.  No issues, and not a rubber and like fluorocarbon.   Closest thing to an all-round line IMO.

fishing user avatarJustinJ reply :

12lb trilene xl or stren original

It's little more like standard nylon mono.  I would compare it to Suffix Siege or Siglon F, though a bit more manageable.  I did a bit of centrepinning with 6# - no catches - and I liked it.  The only drawback, if you want to call it that, is it only comes in clear.  I prefer high vis orange or pink, so I can follow my drift, and others can see it and not cross my line.  The real test is when I use it for chucking spoons off the pier.  I'm not sure it would be the best for bass, but I have a spool of heavier line suitable for cranking I'm going to try when it warms up.  I'm so used to Tatsu for this, it'll take some adjustment.

That describes me almost 100%  Mono is the best in my opinion.  I have been using XT on my two Lews baitcasters and it seems to really work well so far.

One more vote for Big Game. If you really must go with copoly, AN40 isn't bad and comes in 14 lb test which would be my choice for all around.
