Which baitcaster should I buy 2024

fishing user avatarkrisjack69 reply :

I am trying to figure out what baitcaster reel should I buy.I currently have a revo premier 2009 model 6:4:1 ratio.I mostly gonna use it for senko type baits and occasionally crankbaits.I would like to know what reel should I get and what ratio reel.I am looking at the abu garcia revo serie either the sx or stx or premier which a bit pricey for me since I work part time at walmart.I also am looking at the curado e7.I also looking at the new pinnacle optimus xt which looks like a good reel.I also looking at the Pflueger Patriarch.I cannot decide and I hope some of u can help me.So it is between one of the revo sx - stx - premier, shimano curado e, pinnacle optimus xt or the Pflueger Patriarch.I hear the Pflueger Patriarch dont cast as far as the revo's I hope someone here can confirm this.I also may use it to slow roll spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, topwater and Carolina rig.

How much are you willing to spend?

fishing user avatarWanderLust reply :

I have experience with Abu and Shimano. I like Shimanos more than Abu but that is just my preference... Both make excellent products and both have their advantages.

Out of that list it would be an STX or a Curado. Curado is lighter and has a better profile. Abu is a touch smoother.

I have the 201E7 and the 51E right now so you can tell which one I would pick.

fishing user avatarkrisjack69 reply :

well right now I probably wont spend no more than what the revo premier costs but I dont want to buy online tho since I dont want someone to know I got it lol.I dont think they sell revo premier around here. The only reason I dont like the curado is setting of the breaks.I like the revo's better for that it has a 1 - 10 or whatever setting. The curado when u turn them on or off those things looks like they could break just like my shimano cardiff. To me thats a crappy reel.My cardiff dont throw that far and it only for heavy baits since it cant throw small baits.

fishing user avatarskunked_again reply :

sounds like a Revo S 6.whatevertheyare:1 would serve you very well. easy on the wallet too.

They're different types of brakes.  Ones magnetic, the other is centrifugal.  Different strokes for different folks.  To say the Curado is a crappy reel is a bit silly because it doesn't have the 1-10 dial like the Revo series.  Both manufacturers make fine reels.  Either one will serve you very well, as long as you take the time to properly learn how to use it.

BTW, the Cardiffs are more than capable of throwing lightweight lures.  You may want to give yours a thorough cleaning and or learn how to properly use the Shimano braking system.

Like I said whatever you're feeling will certainly work.

I set my brakes once per season and that's it. Simple and effective.

From listening to people who work on reels for a living, Shimano is top notch quality and extremely well made.

Read some reviews, handle some reels and I'm sure you'll be happy with what you decide.

EDIT

Actually if you like magnetic brakes and dual cast control etc the 2010 Revo Premeir is awesome, completely buries the 2009 model. Its just not worth $100 than a Curado so I stayed with Shimano. :)

fishing user avatarkrisjack69 reply :

I didnt say the curado was crappy I said the cardiff was.U misunderstood me.I cant remember but is the brakes on when there pushed in or out?I know if one is pressed in then the other on the other should be to.Right now I have them all pressed out.so there loose now.I cannot cast as far with my cardiff that I can with my revo using senko's.The cardiff is for baits more than 1/4 of an ounce.Dont know the weight of a senko or ocho which i use.

fishing user avatarbwell reply :

Revo STX  8-)

fishing user avatarkrisjack69 reply :

By the way I have a cardiff 200.

fishing user avatarSoFlaBassAddict reply :

Same Cardiff I have.  It's plenty capable of throwing lightweight lures.

With the brakes all pushed out, that means that they're all in the "on" position.  When you push them in, and they're close to the center of the spool, thats the "off" position.

A 5" senko is roughly 3/8 of an ounce.  You should be able to throw one weightless on just about any casting reel used for bass fishing.  I'd assume that an Ocho is pretty close to the same weight.

fishing user avatarkrisjack69 reply :

Well the last time I used it it didnt throw that far and I was using a rage frog.Maybe I do need it cleaned. It does have some cat hair on it.I will get it cleaned when I can.I have one of my reels in for service now then I will get my spinning reel in for service.I dont use the cardiff much.I have it right now on my carolina rig rod.I have the 7 ft quantum tour edition pt mh rod which is for slow rolling spinnerbaits and carolina rigs and probably be good for jig as well.

The reason you can't cast far out is because you have all of your centrifugal brakes on. The cardiff is not crappy, you just have to learn how to use the break system correctly. That being said, I own an STX, Premier, and Curado. My choice for throwing lightweight baits would be either the Premier or the Curado, and since you are pressed for cash, I would say the Curado is your best bet.

fishing user avatarkrisjack69 reply :

What is the best setting for light lures. All pressed in.I just pressed them all in till I heard it click.I know if I get one out then the one on the other side need to be pressed out to.Is that correct.I just dont know much about this breaking system. This reel was one of my first baitcasters then I bought the revo premier and never used it again. The cardiff has a slow ratio which would be great for crankbaits I would think.5:8:1 ratio.

Cardiffs are Crap, crap, crap! send it to me, you'll never have to see the darn thing again  :)

fishing user avatarkrisjack69 reply :

My preference place to buy a reel would be walmart since i work there I get a 10 percent discount.

fishing user avatarCAdeltaLipRipper reply :

Diawa steez.... ::)

fishing user avatarkrisjack69 reply :

I would love to get a one but Diawa Steez is to pricey for me for 500 bucks.I could buy alot of stuff for that. For that much I could buy 2 premiers just about.

fishing user avatarNibbles reply :

If you like externally adjustable brakes, have you considered getting a Daiwa? The Advantage HSTA is around 160-170 or so, and is a pretty sweet reel.

Also, not all Cardiffs are crap. The Cardiff 50 DC is pretty sexy.

fishing user avatarkrisjack69 reply :

What do u use the Cardiff 200 for.I havent used it since I got my revo premier.I think when I get my revo premier back I will take the cardiff to get it serviced. Also my spinning reel needs to serviced too.It hadnt been serviced yet.I had it for a few years too.Sedona 2500FB

fishing user avatarkrisjack69 reply :

I just bought a revo premier 2010 on ebay for 192.50 with shipping and everything.I think that is a great deal.I may take my old revo premier off of my 7ft m vendetta rod and put use my new on on it and take my old revo premier and put it on my 7ft mh quantum tour edtion pt rod which is for carolina rig and slow rolling spinnerbaits.

My new 2010 revo premier dont seem to cast my ocho as far as my 2009 model.I have two breaks out and 4 in.Magnetic turned all the way down so I assume its off and it still doesnt throw it as far.I tried it the all breaks out and it backlashed on me.

Was it NIB when you got it? If not I would recommend a professional clean & lube from DVT.

He can also verify that you didn't get a shoddy bomb casing full of used pinball machine parts.   :)

fishing user avatarkrisjack69 reply :

Yeah it was new.Still had the tag and all on it.I am new to the dual braking system so I guess I gotta get used to it.My other reel is getting serviced now.Been there since the 28th of feb.Taking way to long. They told me it would take a week. Its been two.

fishing user avatarWanderLust reply :

2010 Premier is supposed to be top notch but maybe we need some hands on expertise.

Maybe wipe it down and re-lube according to Abu standards?Perhaps it dried out waiting for you. My curados always performed better with just a drop of oil added.

What's your setup? Rod / Line etc?

fishing user avatarkrisjack69 reply :

I am using 7ft M Modfast Vendetta rod with 15 pound hi-seas line.My line maybe the difference since my other reel I was using 12 lbs Berkley 100% fluorocarbon line with the same rod.

fishing user avatarWanderLust reply :

The rod isn't the issue so perhaps its the line. Drop of lube is sometimes the best medicine too.

fishing user avatarkrisjack69 reply :

Where do I drop the lube at.

Where do I drop the lube at.

Should be in the paperwork for the reel. If not, check Abu's website.

fishing user avatarkrisjack69 reply :

The paperwork dont say anyting about lubing.Just says something about a lube port on select models.I think the same paperwork coming with all abu garcia reels. That what it looks like to me cause there is nothing specific on my reel.I cant find anything on there site.Just says lube gears ok where are they lol.

They are famous for less than detailed directions. Casting distance issues with the reel could be caused by:

1.Spool cap tension shims worn.

2.Spool tension adjusted too tight.

3.Check spool bearings for smoothness and corrosion.

4.Excess dirt or oil on spool shaft or spool lip.

I would say clean the gear assembly and housing below the spool with cotton swabs (alcohol) and place a drop or two of oil on the spool spindle...

*REMEMBER too much oil is not a good thing.

Maybe RM or DVT has a better answer. :)
