Line lubricant 2024

fishing user avatarWillyP reply :

So, what is the story on line lubricants?  Yes, no?  What’s the best kind and suggestions on how often to use and how to apply?

fishing user avatarMike L reply :

To me the "best" is the KVD line & lure.

Apply it when spooling and the night before every outing. It makes the line lay down and helps eliminate stiffness and coil's especially on mono and flouro.

I also use it on braided lines some don't.

fishing user avatarTodd2 reply :

Fluorocarbon is supposedly water proof so I don't understand how it soaks in to help but I'll admit I'm not a fluoro guy. Not sure why anyone would use it on braid. If you are using a stiff mono (CXX comes to mind) there might be some benefit. I just use better handling mono and there is no need. Just my opinion, I'm sure others will disagree.

Yea KVD for me as well. Mostly to tame CXX on my swimbait rod.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

KVD L&L bonds to the line.  It was initially developed for early, still, poor handling versions of fluoro.  Later it was found to benefit all lines, even braid.  For braided lines, I've found it helps them retain their color, and resist fading.  You don't need to apply it to braid as frequently.  For all other lines, it's a must have for me.  I apply it to spools after every trip.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

I use Tangle Free line conditioner for decades, the 2 oz bottle lasts a very long time.

What I dislike about KVD is it takes at least 12 hours to work, so it's a product that doesn't work as you fish, Tangle Free works as needed during the outing.

Another 'No' vote here...saves time answering your follow up questions, too :D

KVD works for me when I fish monofilament.

I swear by Reel Snot. Works just like KVD but quicker. Whatever you do STAY AWAY from Ardent Line Butter.

KVD L&L

fishing user avatarOnthePotomac reply :

Here is what the makers of KVD say about it:

"Line & Lure is a special polymer blend that becomes part of the fishing line it is applied to. Other line treatments you find on the market are primarily silicone oil and solvents. Silicone oil only temporarily coats the line and solvents can damage line. Silicone oil rapidly comes off the line (on your hands and in the water), requiring re-treatment of the line after just a few casts.

The special polymers in Line & Lure are hydrophobic (water repelling) and very slippery. It doesn't allow water to draw back on to the reel spool, which eliminates the line drag that a "wet" spool has. It also protects the line from wearing out as quickly as un-treated line because it resists the abrasion that wears line out.  It contains no oils or solvents as in Reel Magic that can build up and collect dirt like silicone/oil treatments will."

Tom

This past summer (on your recommendation) I picked up the nylon & the Braid product.

Worked well for me.

Hope it's not discontinued.

Real Magic is a nice product. I use it on all kinds of line. Helps with line management, less memory and less tangles.

Anyone know how Reel Magic and KVD LL are different?  Thought they were pretty much the same thing...

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

A good late freind and reel technician told me that Reel Magic was primary cause of most reel repairs he did. Reel Magic turns gear lubricant to gum and mixes with oils to form a gooey substance. To clean it out required soaking over night in a acetone bath, bearings had to be ultra sonic cleaned after a solvent bath.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Just an FYI, it isn't "Reel Magic."  It's REAL Magic.  I don't recommend putting it anywhere near your reels.

fishing user avatarTurtle135 reply :

After seeing the recommendations in this post I picked up a bottle of Kevin VanDam's Line & Lure Conditioner.

I use fairly heavy monofilament line for all of my bass fishing. One problem with heavy mono in cold weather is that it can come off the spool of a baitcaster like bailing wire. It is fine in warm weather but the memory in the line in cold weather is problematic.

I soaked my line with the KVD spray the night before I went out fishing. I have to say I am impressed. It made that line much more manageable and the coiling was almost completely gone.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

It's a must have up here in winter, fishing for tributary steelhead.

One is literally flammable, and the other is endorsed by one of the greatest of all time and works like a charm.

And to touch on what @WRB said, that makes complete sense now why whenever I broke down my father's Curado's they were completely gum on the inside.

Go get it back!  It’s great for squeaky door hinges, stuck nuts and bolts, and getting price tags off presents!

This is a great description for the issues I had with flouro when pitching. It would just unravel a bit off the spool and drive me nuts. My first time trying flouro and it didn’t take long to just go back to braid and a leader. I’m still curious to maybe try a different brand or give it another shot one day

For me with the monofilament I am able to cast or pitch without a problem but that line coiling on the surface robs me of any real contact with the presentation. I have used the KVD spray a couple more times since the initial use. I make sure that any line involved in the cast gets a good soaking the night before I fish. Stuff definitely works and I get a straight line from the tip top of the rod to the lure.

p.s. - I have tried braid before in the winter. If it gets cold enough that braid will freeze into a solid chunk so that is not an option for me.
