fishing user avatarJohn G reply :

I saw this today while driving around. It's kinda hard to see but there is a problem with one of the combos.

We were at a red light and actually I was surprised to even see the baitcaster. They are not that common around here.

fishing user avatarMccallister25 reply :

Honestly, that probably happens a lot more than you think.

Iv seen people using spinning reels with the reel facing up like a caster. Can't be comfortable.

fishing user avatarTywithay reply :

My stepdad has a couple baitcasters on spinning rods. He can cast them every bit as well as a baitcaster rod. Still looks kind of funky though. I don't think I could even try something like that.

fishing user avatarJohn G reply :

I was under the impression the the blank should only bend in a certain direction.

Have seen the same thing.  Really don't understand why anyone would use a spinning reel that way.  Balance must cause fatigue pretty quick.

Yea, I am not a custom rod guy... I have read about a rods spline?... So I am with you..

Maybe a rod materials/ builder might chime in on

that.

Yeah. I've read that they are made to tolerate weight/pressure mostly in that one direction. So using one backwards isn't a very good idea.

fishing user avatarDelaware Valley Tackle reply :

A rod can and will bend equally well on any axis. Spine/spline has been largely dismissed as a relevant issue nowadays. Spine is a side affect of the blank rolling process and never was a design feature. The only ones to ever pay any attention to it were custom builders. I doubt any mass production atmosphere allows for such intricate layout procedures. They just use  recipe. Besides looking like a dweeb, the lack of a trigger is hardest part of using a caster on a spinning rod. The overly large guides high up off the rod will make the rod want to twist with a  heavy load on it (anti-spiral wrap) as well.

Thanks for the explanation!

fishing user avatarJohn G reply :

The last person that I saw fishing with a spinning reel on top of the rod was an older lady. My first thought was that someone set her up like that to get some laughs. If I wasn't driving, I would have showed her the correct way.

I actually prefer not having a trigger on casting rods. I generally don't take them off anymore because it voids the warranty and kills any hope of resale, but in the past I have sanded the trigger clean off. Much more comfortable to palm for me.

Last time I saw a b/c it was some tourist bragging about a 5# bass, we asked him if he brought it along for bait.

Hopefully that guy doesn't come across any low flying birds......snap

I'm positive he'll be on TW tomorrow bashing X reel because "The darn thing just won't cast worth a lick!"  :laugh5:

fishing user avatarbigbill reply :

When I broke and shortened my #5 fly rod it was useless. Then I installed a UL spinning reel and it's a crappie setup now. I use a rattle bobber with a 1" mister twister chartreuse grub.

fishing user avatarhatrix reply :

I got a GLX flipping stick I still use today from a friend who used it on a spinning rod... He cut the trigger off and I had to have the seat and back cork replaced but it worked great for him he said.

It was a heavier rod so he used it for Muskie fishing. I bought him a spinning rod to fit his needs and we made a "even" trade.

I was flats fishing in Cuba saltwater doing that and being stupid, and a great big Barracuda whacked my bait and nearly took the rod. I lost him though...

fishing user avatarwisconsin heat reply :

I see it ALL. I beat the banks most of the time, hitting up some well populated areas. The funny stuff I see people do Include but are not limited to:

Using spinning rods upside down

Using Thumb-cast style reels on spinning rods, or spinning reels on trigger rods

Using large snap-swivels or steel leaders to attach their hook while bobber fishing for small blue gill

Using a much too large a hook for the same small bluegill

Bobbers rigged incorrectly/upside down

My favorite is fisherman standing in one exact spot casting to the same exact spot 50 times with a gaudy chartreuse spinnerbait in gin clear water

Also saw a guy fishing a buzzbait under the water (1+foot depth)the other day.
