Some of you may not remember that far back.
Mine was an Olympic Spinning combo. As a kid we use to fish the rock Jetty at Moss Landing, CA and still remember all the perch, sand dabs and jackesmelt we use to catch. Don't remember the model number, just remember that I absolutley cherished that rod and reel. I wish I still had it.
Zebco 202 rod and reel combo.
My first bass fishing was a Garcia 5000 matched up with a 5' 6" MH Lews Speedstick.
A shimano stella and a G loomis GLX. I got it for my 4th birthday.
Zebco 33 with whatever rod it was that it came on. Actually I still have the reel and it still works. Not sure what happened to the rod.....
Zebco 33 combo. I used to catch all kinds of fish with it.
Zebco 66. I had to get a little older before I got a 33. No idea what the rod was, other than it about a 5 footer.
mickey mouse rod and reel. My first bass combo was a pflueger preident and a BPS extreme rod.
When I was a kid, there was alway's set ups to use where ever I went. My first, all my own set up, was one I still have/use. A Berkley Avenger glass rod w/pistol grip and a Shimano Bantam Mag 10Xsg. Somewhere around '82??? It was mothballed for a few years in favor of spinning gear, but lately I had been using it again for crankbaits. Pulled in many Northern Pike, among other fish, with that combo. It was used in a few states and Canada in it's lifetime.
Daiwa underspin reel with matching rod. I still remember my first bass, 19 years ago, I remember the spot, and seeing it jump. I had no Idea it would lead to a lifelong addiction.
not sure but i wish i knew. it was a small red zebco spincast on a matching pistol grip rod that was about 5foot. i remember th handle brushed against the body of the reel w/ each turn and i used to practice casting so much in my yard that i eventually wore a hole in the side of the body. i was sad then....
but my first bass combo was just a few years ago it was a shakespeare synergy combo. POS broke after my first day of bassfishing. so after that i got my second bass combo which is still in good use today an okuma stratus st30 on a shakespeare ugly stick 6'6" M.
Johnson Cisco rod and reel combo. Everything was green and its was the most beautiful thing in the world at the time to me.
Shakespeare Ugly Stick, 6'6", Medium, Mod. action spooled with 8 lb. cheap mono ;D. I remember it down to the details. It is now a nasty catfish rod.
Penn 9M General Purpose Level Wind on a Heddon Glass rod; if you can cast that with out a backlash you can cast anything.
First bass rod-n-reel; Abu Garcia Ambassaduer 5000 on a Heddon Mark Special Purpose #6277 5 ½' Medium Heavy Action, 3/8 to 1 oz, 8 to 20 lb line.
Zebco 33 on a 5'6" glass rod. Thought I had reached the top.
I have my first rod right here. If I can still read the writing on it...
Ted Williams Professional Model
Model No. **35.*0231 6'6" Medium Action
Use 3/8-3/4 OZ. Lures and 8 to 20 LB Line
Sears, Roebuck and Company
It's an orange fiberglass rod with 5 double footed guides held on with brown thread. The grip is some sort of composite cork and the reel seat is black aluminum. It must be more than 30 years old.
I don't have the reel anymore, but it was a Mitchell reel that looked soemthing like this...

Zebco 202 on a semi-transparent fiberglass rod. Bought it used at the neighbor's garage sale.
The black cover and wingnut on the handle were after-market upgrades. ;D
Honestly? My first rod was a canepole. I was 3 yrs old and my dad chopped one down that I could use. Spent MANY hours on our dock with that thing before I got a actual rod/reel when I was 4 yrs old. Zebco 202 on a yellow solid glass Holiday rod. It is still in the shed at the lake and still works. It was junk when it was new and it's still junk. ;D
Way to super tune that Zebco Dan!! ;D
Zebco 744? combo
an old school abu garcia fiberglass rod with a quantum all plastic spinning reel that sounded like a pepper grinder when I cranked it- dang I still rember that combo- my dad bought it for me and I fished with it for a long time-
Zebco 202 combo, fished with it all summer when I was 9 years old.
A cane pole was my first but I took a big step up when I got a Zebco 33.
I learned to fish using an Abu 5000 on a custom Fenwick rod (my dads). I was 7yrs old. I caught my 1st bass on it. The 1st rod that was all mine was an Abu 6000 on a custom built rod on an Ugly Stick blank. I was 10yrs old.
I had an old Daiwa spinning reel and an orange rod is all I remember. It was a catfish rod I think
Ted Williams Approved Shakesspear Fiberglass spinning rod from Sears with a metal MITCHELL300

Same here. I don't remember the brand of rod that I used with the Zebco.
Heddon tubular steel bait casting rod with a Johnson Century spincast reel and 6# test line. Caught me a lot of fish on that old rig many, many years ago, growing up on the CT River. Guess what? I still have that rod!
Snoopy here too. When you're three...the snoopy is where it's at. After that...I went to a 202. My first spinning rod was a Shimano AX100Q/Shakespeare no-name rod (spooled with omni-flex). My first real bassin' rod I bought when I was 10 or 11...time to get serious. I purchased a Quantum spinning reel (don't remember the name...it was $39...I though that was sooo much money!) and paired it with the ultimate rod at the time (drumroll)...the black foam handled Lightning Rod- 6' M. I learned how to Texas rig with it, and it changed everything. After a while, I wanted to use a baitcaster, so I would borrow my uncles lightning rod/Abu XLT plus Synchro. I would backlash the crap out of that thing. I bet he went through a lot of line because of me
You made me remember the days of Shakespeare "E Sigma" That Shakespeare catalog would get me day dreaming just like the Steez catalog gets me going now.
Those were the days man....
It was a Zebco something....I don't remember anymore...
Old zebco when I was a kid. funny how they are pretty much the same now as 25yrs ago. Then I got a hand me down mitchell spinning reel which was born way before me. I though I was big stuff then.
If memory serves me correctly, my first new fishing combo was something I had never heard of a Shimano, that I got back in the early 70's. My father smoked Phillies cigars, and they had a label gimmick where you received merchandise in exchange for specific quantities of their cigar labels. Don't know if its correct or not, but it seemed to me that the cigar label offer seemed to have something to do with Japanese products trying to enter the US market. Although it wasn't a Zebco like all my other friends had, that weird looking metallic green spincast combo casted like a charm and lasted me many years, as did that odd phonograph I got the same way something called Sony and I still use the speakers from it.
(by the way if anybody needs one of the first generation portable IBM personal computer, let me know. Its about 24 long by 20 wide, 8 deep, and seems to weigh about 50 pounds... yeah I know Muddy, its time to clean out that garage)
I can't remember the maker but it was about 4.5 feet long, hexagonal cross section steel and heavy. I can't recall the reel make either but there was only the cast control knob and your thumb for backlash control. No star drag. Pressure on the fish was accomplished with your thumb as was casting with out backlash.
My next reel was a Langley Streamlite, followed in a few years by a Pflueger Surpreme, as I recall the Surpreme cost me about a week and a halfs summer job paycheck. Oh, still no improved cast control or star drag.
Wow! I must be aging but the nice thing is I fish most any day I want to go.
Zebco spincast combination package. A little plastic rod and reel.
Several years later I got a huge upgrade for Christmas. Another plastic Zebco (202?) and a slightly longer/ heavier fiberglass rod. Man, I thought that was cool!
A Johnson Century Spincast reel on a green 5 foot rod that was as limber as a wet noodle. I still have both the rod and reel.
A Zebco spincast combo.
THought that was the ultimate rig. Than I saw a spinning setup and was wondering what the crap was that!
Bought my boy his first combo this summer. Mitchell Espirt spinning combo 6 foot rod. Caught some nice bass for him. He wanted a Zebco spincast as well but I would have none of that. ;D Nothing like getting a birdsnest out of a Zebco. You myswell just throw the darn thing out.
