How often do you upgrade or buy new rods and reel? 2025

Over the past few seasons it seems that I am constantly buying or selling rods and reels just to buy something else that catches my eye or peaks my interest and its getting rather expensive.

A fine example would be like yesterday. We were traveling back from visiting family and I decided to swing by this "out of the way" tackle shop. I started looking to see if I could find a Revo Premier, just so I could handle one and check it out. He had one and when he handed it to me I immediately started taking inventory of what I needed to get rid of to load my rod locker with these Premiers. I have a pile of STX's already and they are great reels but I already know I'll be selling all of them to buy these Premier's.

Anyone else go thru this type of thing?

i always have 4 baitcasting combos and 2 spinning combos and i become attached to my rods. the only time i replace my rods are when they break, which happen kinda often. my reels get replace whenever they go bad, but i never just sell off my rods and reels. i will buy spare rods n keep them in my closet in case i break one mostly spinning rods. thats just me but all anglers are different

I know a few guys like you 5bass. I never really spent too much on the gear (presidents,spidershafts,etc) so when something breaks, ow well, and if it seems to not be getting used, it gets given away.

I buy a new reel for every new rod, like the Tierra I bought for the Turkey Run rod, the dozen Presidents and 4 Penn's for the spidershafts,etc.

The next few rods I buy will be additions to the Turkey Run rod compilation, with a set of 5 being the ultimate goal. These will get better than avg "Low Budget" reels because I plan to stick with them and only them for a good amount of time.

I hear you LBH. I'd like to stick with something for a long time, thats my goal but I don't manage that goal very well. When I bought all the Revo's last year I had envisioned that I'd be using them for alot of years but yesterday's experience with the new Premiers kicked that idea right out the door.

I'd say 2 to 3 times a year on your questioned, The problem is I always want to find one better, I'm not very faithfull-I fool around with other rod and reels ;D

Their not cheap on the wine and dine them catagory either, they always want some better string and new hooks-I mean God forbid a old hook was to touch them :

My problem is figuring out what I have to do to get 5 or 6 more Setyr rods. I bought one earlier this year, and love it. I broke it, they replaced it, no questions asked. Cost me 18 bucks to ship it back and 25 bucks for their replacement costs. I bought another one a couple of weeks ago, and love it. The first one is 6'6" medium, and is the perfect rod for swim senko's and small cranks. The second a 6'6" MH that I really like for spinnerbaits and jerkbaits. These have shorter handles than most rods this length. I like that. Split rear grip, no fore grip, extrememly light and sensitive, American made, no bling, just pure function. What's not to like? At $225 to $250 each, I'm looking at well over a grand to get the ones I want. They sell blanks, so it's possible to save a little bit making them myself.

I'm gonna have to stick with my PT's and Millionaires for a while. I just upgraded my Millionaire's from 3+1 bearings to 5+1. They'll be 9+1 as soon as the new handles get here. Now there's a dangerous thing to get started. Upgrading reels is not cheap either.

I'll take it back 5B. You don't have it any worse than I do.

I'm going to try realy hard not to buy any more tackle. I have more than what I need, but when a new rod or reel comes out that is lighter than what I already own then I will look into it.

Evergreen rods by the way, are my new favorite, over Steez.

Am the world's worst about " if it works , why change". If I buy something to replace a rod, reel, bait, knife or pretty much anything, the original has to be broke, completely worn out or lost. It's not a "spending money" thing, 'cause money burns a hole in my pocket as fast as the next guy. Have always been that way about things...

I do it all the time. There is always going to be something that peaks my interest. This year I have upgraded 5 combos. 8-)

I don't really buy a lot. My problem is that I tend to buy two-at-a time. 2 Revo SCs, 2 Revo SXs, 2 Shimano Curados, etc. I like to have doubles of everything, and I have no clue why.

When I decide to upgrade, I usually keep what I have, so I've accumulated a lot. When I decide to retire something, I end up giving it away.

I did some upgrading in 07, prior to that....95 or 96. I upgrade when I feel I need to, but I don't feel the need to upgrade every time something better shows up. I have 5 Shimano reels that I bought around 95-96 that I still use. My TD-1's that I bought around that same period are getting retired and replaced with Revo's. I hope these Revo's hold up as well as my Daiwa's and Shimano's because I REALLY like them so far. They are the smoothest, best casting and retrieving reels out of the box that I have ever had. The only thing that would make them better is....lighter weight ala Premier. I can agree with what you are doing and why. I am still toying with the idea of a Premier and may get one before Spring, but it will only be one and it will be the last casting reel I buy for a long time. It's time for a new boat now instead!

When it breaks or wears out I replace it. The rod I catch most of my fish on is a BPS Bionic Blade that is 7-10 years old. I have repaired or replaced every guide on it. I also have a reel made from parts of three different reels that is probably just as old. I spend all my money on new baits.

I like to buy a couple reels a year and rods. And oddly enough I always buy in the winter for some reason. I guess it's the thought of not being able to fish as much during the winter months and it's seems to help pass the time.

Yep. I'm always looking to upgrade tackle when the price is right. I got two of the nicer St. Croix's at the Reeds sale then picked up three Falcon Caras a couple days later when Academy had them for $40 off. Problem is, it's hard for me to turn loose of the old stuff sometimes. I guess I have to accept that it's time to turn loose some old Falcon Originals and Lowriders.

I haven't really upgraded yet. I see it more as adding more setups to the arsenal. You need at least 50 right? Have a ton of Salmon and Walleye gear collecting dust but can't part with it though never know when might use it again.

I'm pretty much set, I do upgrade my kids as they get older. My son just got one of my (sitting on the shelf) sustain's and his first g-loomis. This was my wifes g-loomis rod till she broke it, I sent it back for 50 bucks they sent me a new rod and my wife has a brand new ugly stick. I do need a back up bait caster so maybe for x-mass.

About 3 years ago I started upgrading/replacing my old equipment. Before that it was about 10-15 years since I had bought some new rods and reels. I took me quite some time to figure out all the new stuff that's out their but it was worth it. I think I might buy a new setup once a year if I can get a good deal on it.

I have taken a liking to St. Croix and Loomis so I am just $50 and a phone call away from a new rod anytime I want it.

I usually made things last quite a few years before buying new. Last year I decided I needed to invest in better equipment. I have spent the last 2 years buying the type of rods I wanted, that I hope to have last me many, many years to come. I'm not hard on equipment, so I think my "investments" will pay off in the long run. Lures, on the other hand, keep my pocket change from building up too much. ;D

New stuff comes out in the winter (as Russ said, and I think they do this on purpose) I have found that when I can't fish, I buy.

Very little urge to buy anything from March to November then, BAM, I start to get the urge to buy.

I am guilty as charged, I buy to many and keep going back to what worked in the first place. I have been able to upgrade my rods to where I wanted them and just by chance the other day 2 Trions on the board, from a guy I trust, used one season for the price of 2. I gave up 2 pro qualifiers and for that and some cash I wil have a President Baitsater my way. SO NOW I HAVE ALL MY FAVORITE REELS and I have to stay pat . I think LBH is right because it is in the winter I buy stuff I don't really need.

I don't consider that commit a brand war but I feel my Calcutta's are at the top and if anything I could make a lateral move to Calais's. I've already up-graded my Calcutta's bearings and drag system so there's really no need to up grade my reels. I also feel my Calcutta rods are as sensitive as any so there's no up-grade required there either,

I hadn't really bought any new rods or reels since the late 90's. I went back to college from 2000 - 2004 and fishing equipment upgrades sorta took a back burner.

Went back fishing in full time in 2005 and I was having trouble using all my round reel Garcia's (that's all I owned besides some XLT XL plus types). I was in hand and wrist pain after just a couple hours. I realized I was going to have to convert to LP reels.....

gulp.

I never owned one before, considered them too wimpy. The past couple years I've been zeroing in on finding the most comfortable LP reel along with rod upgrades. I'm pretty set on all my soft plastic rods, still need a few more rods and reels. I'm pretty confident when I'm done next year upgrading I'll be set for quite a awhile to come.

Starting with core rods (H/F baitcaster, M/F (firm tip) spinning and a M/F (soft tip) baitcaster for treble hooks) I have added technique specific rods over the last several years. So, for me, it's not about replacement, but rather, additions.

Over the last several weeks, as a result of the St. Croix sale, I have "completed" my rod collection and matched up these rods with comparable reels. The Bait Monkey was so impressed, He told me I don't have to buy anything else this year (2007 ).
