hey... i got my new Revo s today.... i may try it out tomorrow, but, i cant figure out how to remove the sideplate to adjust the brake...how do you do it?? i read about a thumb screw, i think its the one on top that can be loosened with the fingers... but, i unscrewed it (leaving it in place) and yet i couldnt remove the sideplate... it has a button, which i dont seem to be able to push... should i push harder?? or how do you do it?

It's a screw at the top of the reel. Back the screw off and twist the other side up and down keep your thumb on the spool so that doesn't pop out. It takes a few times but then becomes easy

should i push the button also?? or just move the sideplate??
Maybe back off a little more. Twist the side plate back toward you
thanx!! i just did it, i had to pull the screw a little bit... i was also trying to twist the plate away from me, as in my other reels....
now, how do you adjust the brakes?? it has 6 pins... 3 of them say PITCH and 3 say nothing... and, i can only set the ones labeled as pitch, the other ones have a spring, so if i move them upwards, they come back to their original position... the labeled ones can be set outside and they remain at that position....
so, i read somewhere the pins had to be set evenly... that would make this reel only a 2 position reel, with the 3 pins ON and with the 3 pins OFF, as i cant set them in pairs....
this doesnt makes much sense, so, what am i missing??
People saw you can use one but I never do. I usually use one pitch and one spring or 3 spring. Push the pins away from the center to engage and away to disengage use your finger nails
thanx!! i didnt notice you could disengage the spring pins pushing them to the center, i thought i could only set the pitch ones...
so, i pushed 1 pitch pin to the outside, leaving the other 2 disengaged, and pushed 2 spring pins to the center, leaving the one opposed to the engaged pitch pin also engaged... i think this must be a good starting point, hopefully i dont have to adjust much, i dont like taking apart the reel in the boat...
The pitch brakes are for pitching, leave them off. Here is a link to a video by Abu describing the reel's features including the brakes.

but... since im going to use this reel 90% of the time for spinnerbaits, and i dont pitch them, im not going to use the pitch pins...
now, how do i adjust the spring pins?? if i want to balance the brake using only those 3 pins, theres only 2 positions, either all ON or all OFF... if i use the 6 pins i can use 2 pins (one each), 4 pins (2 each) 6 pins (all), or alternate 3 on 3 off...
can i use only one spring pin and leave the other 5 disengaged??
You could do that with an educated thumb. While the pitch is for pitching. The pitch will stay engaged throught the cast while the springs engage at the beginning. Since my thumb is at middle school level I like having a break engaged throught the cast to help prevent backlash
well, my thumb is also mid-educated, and sometimes missbehaves.... so i guess i will use a couple of brakes at the beginning and ill see how i like it like that, and then adjust accordingly....
I have the orra sx which has the same breaking system but has a reputation for back lashing maybe the new s will be better good luck and enjoy!!!
Centrifugal brakes are engaged when thereel us at Max speed, throwing spinnerbaits u should be fine as long as u keep it low, get it up in the wind and it will backlash. With Abu Garcia reels set the tension screw where the bait begins to drop, but will not fall on its own. Abu reels get a bad rep for backlashing, set the tension screw like I described and you'll be fine. I have an old Abu manual that describes it the way I just did, it makes a world of difference

I have 2 of the spring loaded brakes on an it works fine.
This is the information you should know.... Centrifugal brakes are designed to prevent the reel from speeding up too fast at the beginning of the cast, and causing a birds nest. The cast control knob is to prevent the spool from over run when the lure hits the water.
You CAN use 1,2, or 3 brakes and doubt you will notice any wobble during the cast. It takes someone very proficient with casting reels to notice a difference. If I were you I would set three to start, and go from there.
First thing to do is set the cast control knob. Step 1 with all brakes OFF and the cast control knob tightened down. Hold the rod at about eleven O'Clock and disengage the spool, and slowly loosen the cast control knob till the lure begins to fall slowly, but not too slow. Now set three centrifugal (none pitch) brakes to the on position, and you done. This is the correct way to set this reel up when going through the learning curve. If you want a bit more distance, turn off one brake at a time. Hope this helps.

I can flat out sling a 1/2oz bait with 2 on. Can't imagine the distance I could get with this reel with another one off. It can flat out get the bait out there. Best $129 you'll spend.
I'm using one pitch and one spring and it works pretty well.

thanx, thats what i was planning on doing, but i think ill use only the spring ones first and then decide how i like it... its good to know i can mix and match without a problem...
One thing I have noticed about the new S is that when removing the side plate you have to unscrew and move the pin to the right to remove it. Im not sure if thats an extra safety measure so you won't drop it, but my Gen 2 S and my Gen 2 STX's dont do this.
the new revo can cast very very far without any backlash. You will not be dissapointed. You will be dissapointed if you dont like loud reels. This thing sounds like a fighter jet when you give it a good cast. I ordered the carbon handle and EVA knobs, and bocca bearings for my gen 3. Its going to be one bad **** reel.
Put a tiny dot of oil on a q tip and run it around that gold ring that the brakes ride on. Once that ring dries out, it gets a tad noisy. Not bad though.

Thanks, i will try that out. I dont mind the noise at all. But my fishing buddy (who is also a abu garcia guy) always gives me a hard time when i start casting the gen 3 because its so much louder than my gen 1's and 2's
According to the Abu rep I talked to, if you run that gold ring dry you can actually melt the brake tabs.

yesterday i had about 1 hour of spare time so i went to the lake to test my Revo S... i noticed it was loud during the cast, and also made some noise during the retireve... so i came back home and cleaned the spool bearings. i removed them, and put them in a glass with acetone... then i flushed them with water, and dried them with a hair dried... then i reinstalled them, and put just one drop of oil on each one.... today i went again to test the reel, and it is much smoother now, much more quiet, and it casts great.... i was casting weightless senkos easily with this reel....
i also cleaned the gold ring since it had come kind of grease in it, i guess ill add a drop of oil to it too to prevent damage to the brake pins as TNbassin says....
Yeah just put a few drops on a q tip and rub it around the inside of that gold ring and you'll be good to go. While you're at it, clean off the brake tabs to get off that old grease. My Revo S brakes are much more consistent now, and distance has improved a little as well. Once a month you want to do this according to the Abu rep.

yesterday i was slinging weightless 5" strike king Ochos and got a really good distance, and i had no backlashes at all, not even while adjusting the cent brakes. im really liking this reel. unfortunately i have not gotten a fish with it yet...
I caught my biggest fish on it last night, a 3.5lb smallie. The reel is so smooth on the retrieve....
congrats!! i fished yesterday for about 5 hours, in the morning, the local lake was really crowded, and at the ramp i spoke to a couple fishermen who said they didnt catch a single fish... neither did we... hopefully in a couple of weeks ill catch something to put this reel to the real test... so far i really like it, as someone mentioned earlier, $130 well spent....

I clean all my reel bearings before i ever use the real for the first time. So im sure i quieted it down, but i never heard it pre lube flush and reel oil. I actually like the sound of it on a deep cast. Sounds like it should. You dont ever hear real quiet race cars do ya? lol

hahaha, i know, its the sound of power....
after the lube my reel is really quiet... if you call that "noisy", i dont know what a quiet reel is for you... before the cleaning, it was noisy, not loud but disturbing, not a noise i would want to come out of a new reel... but now after cleaning, its very quiet and smooth...
