IM going out fishing tomorrow in the am and i really need this reel to working again.. For some reason when i turn my reel the star wheel loosens up and i cant real in my line i then have to tighten it back up then real like 3 turns then it happens again.. plz help me!!!!!!!!!!
Your not gonna like this, but put it in the trash and buy a new one. These reels are pretty much "disposable".
I'm gonna say the same thing as LMG. If its already busted and there's no quick fix, I would leave it and save up for a better reel. Something like a Citica or Revo S can be found for relatively cheap and will be a nice solid reel.
Something is preventing it from rotating with the crankshaft and handle. I would take of the handle and turn the crankshaft to see if I could see the drag star backing off. Then take the drag star off to see if the round portion is bent or has a dent in it and also inspect the inside of the drag star.
I've had my Black Max 2 for close to 2 years with no issues. Is it a cheap reel? Yeah, but I wouldnt say its disposable.
Ninja's on the right track. Inspect the handle & drag assembly to be sure everything is present, installed and seated correctly. As silly a this might sound, be sure the cast control cap is tightened enough to not interfere with the drag star when you crank. Let me know if you need more help. No need to be hasty in disposing of this reel.
I would do as stated above. Take the right side off of the reel and check out the gears that connect between the reel handle pinion (big gear) and the smaller gears that it drives.
If you cann't take the side off of this reel to check that out then just chuck it and go get a new reel.
As also stated above, these are actually made to be disposable rather than repaired but I would give it a shot.
thanks for the info.. i dont want to dispose of i woul dlike ot fix if i can fix it for 10 bucks is better then throwing it out and being one rod down.. i took it apoart like 90 times its been workring very well and i have no problems with it until now.i think im missiing a few washers to keep the star wheel from turning when i reel.. so i know it obvious that i need these washers or its not going to work but..... for somereason they werent there when i took them off to clean it i put it back together but onw its messing up... im thinking about get a revo sx.. what a good reel in the revo series for around 150-200..is there any other reel thats better if im spending this kinda of money?
Revo S gen 3 gets my vote. For $129 it's a steal.
Grizzin,
You can go to the Abu Garcia site they have schematics for all of their reels. Makes it easy to see what you are missing if anything. Also they have great customer service, tech guys to help, etc.
Yeah, a Curado or Chronarch.
The new S is just as smooth as the chronarch and it costs less. Go to BPS and compare them side by side. You'll see.
If you wind up getting a new reel and want to stick with Abu Garcia I would vote for the Revo S as well. Its a great reel for the price. I have the Gen 2 and its one of my favorites. Going towards the higher end of your range, I'm sure the Gen 3 STX would also be really nice. Personally, I would tend to stay away from the SX just because it only has magnetic brakes. I prefer centrifugal, which the S and the STX have. Now, if LMG gets you to join Team Shimano, you can't go wrong with the reels he mentioned (Curado and Chronarch) in that price range.
Get something with centrifugal breaks and a aluminum frame.
yeah i gotta do some research im just thinking how i can spend my money i got saved up in the omst efficent way to get the best real i can get for the oney im spending and get alot of tackle as well
i might bump my price range for a rel to 250-300 if i think its a steal of a reel in that price range

Agreed. If you go Abu, stay with the S due to brake system it has.On 10/24/2012 at 9:27 AM, Arv said:If you wind up getting a new reel and want to stick with Abu Garcia I would vote for the Revo S as well. You must be joking, the Revo S is not even close to the Chronarch.

You Shimano guys need knee pads. If you slapped the Shimano name on a Revo S, you people would love it. Fan BOYS....On 10/24/2012 at 9:20 PM, LgMouthGambler said:There is no comparison.
Bwahahahahaha. Not with those brakes. On 10/26/2012 at 6:26 PM, TNBassin said:You Shimano guys need knee pads. If you slapped the Shimano name on a Revo S, you people would love it. Fan BOYS....
Both reels have centrifugal brakes. What makes the Chronarch's better? On 10/26/2012 at 6:32 PM, LgMouthGambler said:Bwahahahahaha. Not with those brakes.
Glad you got your reel fixed, enjoy.
Its the construction of the brakes. Take a look, youll see.On 10/26/2012 at 7:04 PM, TNBassin said:Both reels have centrifugal brakes. What makes the Chronarch's better?
How did the brakes perform for you when you used the new Revo S?On 10/26/2012 at 7:45 PM, LgMouthGambler said:Its the construction of the brakes. Take a look, youll see.
They work, but not impressed. Didnt like the Gen 2 either. Dont get me wrong, they are good reels. But they dont compare to a Chronarch. Im just not crazy about Pure Fishings brake design. On 10/26/2012 at 7:54 PM, TNBassin said:How did the brakes perform for you when you used the new Revo S?
You touched an Abu? Did it burn lol??
It left a few blisters. Looked like the 3 palm marks from the Demon Child, lol.On 10/26/2012 at 8:01 PM, TNBassin said:You touched an Abu? Did it burn lol??

These threads are embarrassing. Glad you got it sorted out so cheaply.
We just mess around after a while until the mods lock the thread. Wait, I think I hear one coming down the hall now, lol.
