Medium, Moderate Action Spin Rod is a hard find 2024

Not that I really need the rod but it's a tough find. It would fill a void for me and get used pretty hard with smaller (lighter) 1/4 - 3/8 oz. crankbaits. Tough to find a softer composite or graphite rod on the shelf. Fiberglass is even tougher. Most manufacturers want to push fast and xfast actions. Moderate and Moderate Fast are hard to stumble across. I'm not much for buying a rod sight unseen or not handled. May have to order in a few from Cabelas or Bass Pro Shops and take home what I like the feel of. Maybe they will ship to store and I take what I like the best. Really need to have a few in my hands for comparison.

Fenwick had a rod in the previous HMX line that was exactly what you are looking for! I don´t know if the same model is available in the new ones, i don´t remember the model designation but it was a 6.6" medium mod fast action. I had one for a while and really liked it...

St Croix Eyecon walleye model ECS70MM is a 7'0 Medium Moderate rated for 1/4 to 5/8 oz. And if you'd like to spend a little more theres a legend tournament walleye LWS70MM. If you want glass there's the Legend Glass LGS72MM. You're right out of all the other St Croix spinning lines there no moderates, especially not in the ones aimed for bass.

I bought a Penn Battle combo, and the 6'6 that came with it is a M/MF rod.

Besides the ones mentioned, Falcon makes several and Kistler has a couple Mod fast in the KLX line. Hammer Rods has a few too. If you can find a gen 1 Megabass Orochi XX Dropshot Rod it was a Mod fast taper as well.

Theres not not a ton of the, but there’s a few out there.

The falcon bucoo cranker is a little gem at a great price. Very lightweight & comfortable. The blanks are tough yet dont weigh anything. The rating of 1/4- 1/2 is slightly high though... Its great for say, the 1/8oz medium sized rebel craws up to 200 series bandits and maybe 3/8 or so traps.

The only moderate rod i have is an okuma celio light moderate. funny tho, lure rating goes up to 5/8. It was given to me by someone, think it was just used for trout or something. But yeah bass pro around here didnt really have much in medium moderate

Doing a local search that is what I found to be somewhat true. Off the wall type stuff. I’ll go that route if I have to. I just need to get to someone with a nice selection. I see on line where Abu has a few that are moderate. I believe Cabela’s and Bass Pro Shops carry almost a full line of Abu rods. Maybe I can order 3 or 4 of them in and I’m sure I can make one of them work for me.

I’d like to get my hands on one of those Fenglass Rods. Only a few reviews but they are good reviews.

Look into a steelhead/trout/kokanee rod, they come in the power and action you are looking for. Most start ~7ft and go up from there. The Okuma SST Kokanee is a nice one under $100. It's 7ft moderate action and made to throw baits from 1/8oz to 3/4oz. I have the 7'6" variant and have caught lots of smallmouth with it, but it's primary duty is for brook trout. Tons of backbone in that rod.

That’s something I just might be able to find at the fly shop locally. Don’t want to go longer than 7 foot. 7 foot is where I want to be. Thanks for the heads up. My serious search is gonna start this weekend.

You may have a hard time finding the specific rod I mentioned in a brick and mortar out East. It's a kokanee rod, and kokanee are land locked sockeye salmon found out West. Well that’s an overall issue. You can find stuff on-line. Almost limitless on line but the rods are just not at your(my) finger tips.

I would like to touch the Abu Garcia Veritas Spinning Winch Crankbait Rods.

Specs on the 7 ft. 1 pc. version I really like. Only $99. I’m not trying to be cheap or anything but I can’t spend $230 for the St. Croix fiberglass now. I’m all about St. Croix, majority of my rods are SC. And that series is not going to be in stock at any local guy to me.

I’m just anal and if I’m not 100% satisfied when I put down the cash it ain’t gonna work. Doesn’t have to do with money. Has to do with touching it, putting my reel on it, messing with the tip on a piece of carpet and all that BS. I’m so anal it becomes a major project.

If you have a Field and Stream nearby, they sell the Okuma Celilo trout rods which come in a similar power/action. Look for the 7' L 3/16-5/8. They stock them here at the SE Michigan store, so I'd think they may have them near you as well.

I'm surprised nobody mention Fenwick Lunker Stik. I also used a Fenwick Elite Tech Bass 6'9" M/MF and was ok with smaller cranks.

The Eyecon is only $120. Carried by BassPro and Cabelas, and if they don't have it stocked just order to store and try it out. Return it if you don't like it. Trust me the bass don't know it's a "walleye" series ????.

I have a couple Eyecon spinners, though they aren't moderate. The build quality is good, and it's one of my favorite handles for spinning.

Here are two of my "poor man's cranking rods :

1) Square Bills : Berkley Lightening Shock 6'6" M casting rod

2) Lipless Cranks : Berkeley Lightening Shock 7' MH casting rod

The above are both under $50 each and made softer with a combination of graphite / glass to absorb the shock of using braid on hook sets. However I use them with a low stretch co-poly line instead (for cranking) and they work fine until I can decide what I would like to upgrade to !

Favorite spinning rod I have St Croix Avid 8' ML Moderate I throw 3/8oz rocket shad spinnerbaits, 1.5 squarebills, senkos, on occasion 1/2 oz inline spinners and down to ned rigs and 2" paddle tails. The rod as a fair amount of flex/give. If you can hold one check it out.

I also have a 7'6" M/F ST Croix Legend Elite spinning rod. Too much power and no give so be wary of M/F ratings they arent all the same. Good for senkos too.

But the Avid hit the mark for me.

Decided not to spin myself into the ground and not to run all over half the dang state only come up short with whatever a shop has in stock.

A local guy that has gotten me in most of my St. Croix Rods over the years, I’m going have him get me in the St. Croix EyeCon #ECS70MM and the Abu Garcia Veritas #VTSSW70-5 “Winch Spin”. I believe I can make one of these work. Spec wise they are very very close. Both being 7 foot, one will have a cork handle one will be EVA foam, 1 pc., same lure wt., my line wt. will fall in perfect, both made with decent components.

I feel good about how SC rates action of their rods from my experience with them. Even though I have not touched this one. I have handled a couple of the Abu “Winch” casting rods that were medium with moderate action and I liked the softness of those tips. If the spinning version is close I think I’ll be satisfied. I’ll order them Saturday. I pretty sure I’ll like one of these. If I like they both maybe I’ll take both.

I realized I didn’t want to make too big of a project over this. I’ll use this pretty hard with a couple of crankbait styles that I intend to throw on it. My reel ratio is on the slower side. 5.2 : 1, with a slower tip rod should equate to some better hook up with KVD 1.0 & 1.5 squarebills

Don't make assumptions with spinning reels. My 6.0:1 CI4 takes up 34 IPT, which is similar to a 7.3:1 reel.

Exactly, my Trion-30 (5.3:1) takes up 25.9 IPT which fairly compares to a Fuego CT-H (6.3:1) which takes up 26.3 IPT.

Spinning reels ARE lower gear ratio mainly because the spool is larger diameter. Can't directly compare gear ratios between spinning and casting reels.

I’m not sure of my line recovery. I’ll have to look it up. It’s a 2500 series reel I’ll be putting on this.

Long story very short. I made my new home fishing a local lake over the last two years because of the effects of rains hurting the river. It’s been fun making the transition from smallies to greenies.

I’m looking back and some hookups I had a fish that I had lost. And I strongly believe if I were using a softer tip with the cranks I was using I would have lipped a few of those fish.

I have a boat full of fast and extra-fast spinning rods, for lighter cranks I need to try something slower. I have myself covered pretty well with casting rods that sport a more moderate action.

Agreed...I have a 2500Ci4+ that is mighty quick. As are my favorite class of reels to fish...the older (pre-LT) Daiwa 3000/3012 size in the Luvias. They have a 5.6:1 gear ratio but take in almost 38" of line per turn. Plus, the larger spool helps with line lay and I feel slightly smoother drags (maybe to the slightly larger surface area?).

I’m putting on an older Stradic 2500FH. I’ve done brgs., shaft, spool support, shaft and main gear over the years. You can’t kill that reel. But I’m pretty sure it doesn’t have that higher ratio of today. 5.2 or 5.4 to 1 almost positive if I were betting the house. I’ll check box and owner manual.

I LOVE the pair of Falcon Bucco 7'0 "Crankin Spin" model rods! Bought them at Walmart on clearance about 3-4 yrs ago. Nice power, and a moderate action.

Also have a couple older Falcon spinning rods that work great for small cranks, jerkbaits. Falcon Lowrider LFS-2-169, and a LFS-1-17.

I use Pflueger Patriarch XT spinning reels, in size 35.

It’s a saltwater rod but look into the Tsunami Slim Wave rods. A couple of my kayak buddies own them for inshore fishing, but they’re too moderate in action for my liking.

+1 I use 7ft ML eyecons for neg rigs and drop shots for bass. Also I do think that the premier medium fast has a pretty soft tip compared to some of the other lines.

Was able to get the feel of a few rods in a moderate action. After being anal and pondering over them I just went with the best overall feel and balance. Didn’t let price interfere because for the most part they were not all that expensive. Specs were basically the same on all rods.

Went with the Abu Garcia Veritas #VTSSW7015, 7 ft., 1pc., 1/4-5/8 oz., 8-17 lb.

Really didn’t take long to ponder over. Picked up the SC EyeCon first. Nothing to really not like. Really thought it was coming home. Picked up the Veritas felt slightly better to me at the grip. Felt a bit softer at the tip. Put my reel on it, felt like a winner and out the door I went.
