If you could choose only one rod/reel combo to fish with forever, what would it be?
Rod:
Spinning or Casing
Power/Action
Length
Brand/Model
Reel:
Brand/Model
Size
Line
Spinning
St Croix Avid 8' ML Mod
Pflueger Supreme XT 30
PowerPro Supe8Slick 10#
I assume by fishing, you imply bass-fishing. This is a really difficult question to answer, for me, even hypothetically. It'd be a toss-up between the following two.
Setup #1:
Rod:
GGR medium, extra-heavy big bait rod, fast action
Casting
Length: 8 ft
Reel:
Brand/Model: Shimano Calcutta
Size: 401TE
Line: Berkley Big Game 30 lb test
Setup #2:
Rod:
Powell Max 753 football jig rod, medium-heavy power, extra-fast action
Casting
Length: 7 ft 5 inches
Reel:
Brand/Model: Shimano Citica
Size: 201D
Line: Daiwa Samurai 55 lb test with 14-15 lb mono/ copoly/ fluoro leader
One only.....of those I already have: Shimano Cumara 7'2" MHF, Daiwa Fuego or Patriarch XT or Lews TP, 12# Sufix Elite. The reel choice is hard to make.
Second rod: Curado 51E, 8# Sufix Elite, and either a Fenwick ET Smallmouth 6'10" MF or a Falcon Expert 6'6" Medium rod.
This question really sucks. It gets asked often, and I still find it almost impossible to select only one rod/reel combo. It is impossible to see myself fishing with only one combo although in my youth that is exactly what I did for a few years. Didn't know any better.
Choices would change if I lived in Florida. Would then be between my Fenwick Techna AV MH with STX and 40# Sufix Performance or 7'6" Zillion Flip and Pitch with Daiwa 103HL Type R and 55# Samurai Braid. I haven't used either combo enough up here to know which would be my favorite. The STX went with me this year to Florida and performed as expect...which means it did good,
Thankfully I/we don't have to make that choice, and hopefully never will. Even when I walk the shoreline with one rod, I have about 8 more combos in the car.
Since I walleye/smallmouth fish a lot in the spring/fall i'd go spinning
Legend Xtreme 69mlxf spinning
pfleuger patriach 9530
6# suffix 832 new high vis yellow /w 6lb fluoro leader on occasions.
If it was strictly bass
Legend tournament 7'3 MHF
Chronarch 51e - This line decision is impossible but i guess i'd say 15lb fluoro and just wish i had 10 when it was cold.
If it was forever it would be a Curado 50E with a Abu Veritas MH.
Revo MGX & 7 MH/F Abu Garcia Villain with 15 lbs Seagur Abrazx. d**n I feel like i just spent my entire life savings on one combo........
Easy question for me to answer. My most used outfit is a 4000 spinning reel with 20# braid on a 7' rod and the lure I would pick would be a 1/2 oz bucktail jig, brand names would be irrelevant to me. I have in the past, I do in the present, and I will continue in the future to catch a variety of species from LMB to fish that may exceed 40 or 50#. The jig is probably the most important component, there is no game fish I can think of that won't strike it and it can be fished many different ways.
G.Loomis MBR842C/ Core 50MG/ Yo-Zuri #12
Go with the Pro Qual. The mag only brakes on the SX is not that great. I think the Pro Qual is a better all around reel. Ive owned both.On 8/23/2012 at 7:57 PM, SlapShot268 said:Rod:

Line: 14 or 15# flourocarbon. Been using Berkley Vanish for years, tried Stren Flourocast its awful. This rig currently has 14# Vicious Pro Elite but havent used it yet.
Easy answer for me if I can only have one. StCroix avid 6'3" mxf, Curado 200E7 spooled with #15 seguar invizex.
Loomis BCR854 GLX /core 50 It is my jig setup, and I fish jigs year round!
Jeff
If it's gonna be one, it'll have to be a jig and worm rod...
Dobyns 744C Champ Ex. w/Daiwa Zillion. I'd have two spools, one with 15# CXX, and the other with 50# Power Pro.
Rod:
Spinning
Power/Action: M, XF
Length: 5'9"
Brand/Model: Shimano Compre, pre-2012 style (I *strongly desire* an Avid, so this is based on what I have now)
Reel:
Brand/Model: Shimano Stradic FJ (again, based on what I have now)
Size: 1000
Line: 10lb PowerPro Yellow + P-Line Floroclear, mist green leader
G Loomis MBR783C GLX/Conquest 100/PP S8S 20#
Denali Noirwood 842S (Spinning
Quantum Smoke 25
Power Pro 10/2 in moss
Sorry I just can't answer this, I'm like a woman with her shoes, the result always changes
Rod:
Spinning or Casing = Casting
Power/Action = MH/F
Length = 7ft
Brand/Model = Abu Garcia / Veritas
Reel:
Brand/Model = LEWS Tournament Pro
Size = Left Hand
Line = 12 lb BPS Mono
This very interesting to see all the different choices. I'm still trying to decide what I would choose LOL.....
st. croix premier medium power fast action 6-12lb line spinning
stradic 2500
15lb power pro
you can do almost anything with this combo
I'd have to go with the rod I catch the most fish on during the season. Worm/jig. Its also the combo I spent the most cash on!
Rod
Abu Garcia Verdict 7.3 MH fast
reel
Abu Garcia Premier RH 6.4:1(very tempted to replace with an MGX come spring)
Line
12 mono in shallow grass. 30LB Spiderwire w/FC leader in wood/deep grass/reeds/pads
But if you look carefully in the boat there would have to be a crankbait rod and a spinnerbait rod hidden, Along with my spinning rod I use for dropshots! I have never left the dock with no less than 4 rods. Just can't do it, Fished way to many years on a budget with 1 or 2 combo's and I don't have to these days. I'm also not as brand loyal as I used to be. I do like a matched pair, But you will find some Abu, Ardent, Diawa, Shimano and BPS in my arsenal! Lew's could be added too!
I'd have to consider my most productive presentations. Here they are, in no particular order:
Houdini shad / 4/0 EWG hook
Fat Ika / 4/0 EWG hook
6.5" GYCB Kut-tail worm / T-rigged
3X worm / 1/8oz Ike jighead
Rage Tail Lobster / "rage" rigged or T-rigged
Space Monkey / Evo Shake2 jighead
Poor Boys tube / 3/0 Rig-N hook internal weight
T-Mac worm / 1/8oz skipgap jighead
1/4oz jig / Rage craw trailer
Spinnerbait
I could fish all these effectively on my LTB 7' MH-XF, JDM Zillion and either #12 or #14 XL. I would hate having to re-tie all the time, but I could do it.
Casting rod -Abu garcia veritas 7' mh/f

Very nice combo! Congrats. I would like to know how you make out with the Izorline, and which line it is. I tried some 15# on my daughter's Chronarch 101A. Forget which type, but it was too stiff so I spooled some Neon Tangerine 14# Seige on it and she is happy with this line.

Been trying izorline XXX co poly all season, 6lb on a spinning set up, and 8lb on a finesse BC....it's durable and still very managable line for how cheap it is. I still prefer ZY hybrid however.
Staying on topic however...one combo? I like my spinning setups...this one in particular:
Dobyns Champion 703 SF
Shimano Sustain FG 2500
Yo-Zuri hybrid 6# (green)

It's the Izorline Platinum series. Says Copolymer monofilament. Only reason I bought it was because Brian of Brian's B's recommended it with his custom crankbaits. So, when I ordered the crankbaits, I ordered the line. As I recall, it was pretty cheap, also
Haven't fished it enough to tell much however. It casts well and has little memory.
I've got some Sufix 10lb Siege on the other Curado. I like it. But, strangely I can't see the line at all in the water.....makes it hard to watch for line movement. Great casting however.
