IROD Genesis 2 swim bait Jr. Vs Dobyns fury 795sb 2025

fishing user avatarChris Griffith reply :

Which one would be better for the  Whopper plopper 130, s-waver 168, and the spro bbz-1?

Could either of these move up to the Whopper plopper 190, or s-waver 200 or would I need a separate rod for the heavier lures (not really sure I want to go to this size and want a rod that is best for the Whopper plopper 130 and s-waver 168.  I have a fury 735c and the s-waver feels a little heavy for it but it works for now ).

Thanks

fishing user avatar1201vilbig reply :

I have owned both and they are good rods for the money. That being said, I had to warranty the Dobyns twice. After the 2nd time I was done and sold it. The iRod is still doing work. To add another option, I have a Spiralite Maverick 8' HF that has become my fav swimbait rod and it's only $119.00.

fishing user avatarChris Griffith reply :

Do you use any of the lures i mentioned on those rods?  Or other treble hook lures?  Did they all handle lures in the 1-3oz range well?

Thanks

I do like the look of the spiralite.

Works great for the lures you mentioned. The Spiralite is very versatile - I also use it for heavy flipping, punching and to frog as well.

I don’t have the iRod Swim Jr, but I do have the IRod FMS and the Dobyns 795sb and while it’s not an apples to apples comparison, the iRod blows the Dobyn’s out of the water in terms of sensitivity and general feel.  The 795sb was a huge letdown, even for a $100 rod. It just feels dead and doesn’t feel like it loads well with any of the lures I have tried on it, it’s like there is no “sweet spot” anywhere in the rating.  I would rather throw lures that slightly overload the iRod on it rather then pulls the Dobyn’s off the rack.  The 795sb is going be be demoted to a catfish/pier rod.

fishing user avatarChris Griffith reply :

Alright, I talked to Matt at irod and be confirmed that the Fred's magic stick will throw everything I wanted to throw just fine.  It's only 7'5" as well which I liked and $127 at tackle warehouse today so I bought 2 (was originally just buying one for my dad but decided I want one instead of the fury 735c I was using).

Thanks for the help.  Still like the look of that spiralite 1201vilbig.  Might have to try one out in the future.  I've just wanted a irod for a while now and I found so many good posts on the magic stick.

Ok, I'm "glad" to hear that. I purchased a 795sb as my intro to swimbaits and never felt comfortable throwing 2-3 oz baits and was just wondering if it was just me. Like you said, there was no loading and albeit, I never caught a fish swimbaiting, I thought perhaps this is how it was supposed to feel.

Fred’s is an amazing rod, only the length/handle length keeps it from being 100% perfect for me, I would pay a lot for a rod with it’s exact power/taper but a good bit shorter.

I lost 3 Hudd 68Specials this winter to snags on the 795sb and never felt a thing until the lure stopped moving.  I was slow rolling them across the bottom and only on riprap could I feel anything.

I went insane and bought a MB Super Red Demon to replace it and it’s amazing how much more engaged and attentive I am when I can feel the Hudd’s tail moving at a slow crawl.

I wouldn't mind a shorter rod that can handle 2oz glidebaits.

Is the handle just shorter on the red demon?  It's an inch longer than the Freds magic stick overall right?

I have ordered a 5’6” Kuying Snakehead rod from Aliexpress that I am hoping to use for frogs and smaller glides. I will report back once it arrives.

The SDR is 7’6” and is proportioned like a “normal” bass rod. The handle is much shorter then the 795sb and closer to the Fred’s.  I don’t have much time on it yet as I am saving up for a fancy reel for it bit the little I have used it has really impressed me.

fishing user avatarChris Griffith reply :

I really want a megabass but my budget is limited to the levante haha.  Actually I just bought a daiwa tatula elite jerkbait rod and then found the levante jerkbait special.  I haven't received the tatula yet but I wish I would have gone with the levante.

I'd definitely like to hear about the snakehead rod once you get to use it.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

The IRG 754 F Freds Magic stick is marginal for single hook swimbaits over 2 oz IMO.

If you plan to use Hudd 68 or swimmer over 3 oz then go to a heavy Irod or 806 Dobyns.

Tom

fishing user avatarChris Griffith reply :

I'm wanting to throw the Whopper plopper 130 and s-waver 168 which are both under 2oz.  I think I saw a post by you stating you threw a 2.5oz spro bbz-1 rat 50 just fine as well

So I should be fine with the Whopper plopper 130 and s-waver 168 right WRB?

Since you feel this rod is fine throwing a 2.5oz rat and lures up to 3oz, do you feel I could get away with throwing a spro bbz-1 (2-2.5oz depending on which one)

I would agree 100%.  Wanting to throw a Hudd68 and a BBZ 50 Rat was what got me looking at proper swimbait rods in the first place.

I do throw 168 S-Wavers on my Fred’s and really like it for that.

I'm really planning on sticking to 168 s-wavers and others in that 2oz and under range.  If/when I decide to go bigger I'll get a swimbait rod.

Separate question but related.  Can I get away with my curado k throwing s-wavers?  (More of a line capacity issue I guess)

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

168 S-Wavers weigh 1 5/8 oz  (1.63 oz) and fish light meaning they don't get heavier casting a long time like Hudd 68's do. IRG754F is a good ultilty rod and works good.

Shimano Curado K only limitation is line capacity at 110 yds w/14 lb mono (.014D I assume?). I would think 17 lb Sunline Diefer Armillo 17 lb would work good for 168  S-Wavers.

Thanks Tom.  I was looking at that line after reading some of your posts in other threads and wanted to try it.  Just wasn't sure whether to go with 17 or 19 but 17 would put more line on the spool obviously.

Do you ever use braid with a leader to get more line?  I was curious about that because I was watching videos from tacticalbassin on the s-waver and both Matt and Tim use braid with a leader (I usually like to stick with one type of line though with one knot).

fishing user avatarChris Griffith reply :

Just curious, what gear ratio is ideal for the baits I listed?  Most of my reels are 7, one 6, and I was thinking about picking up an 8.

fishing user avatarChris Griffith reply :

Rods showed up.  I really like the feel/look of them.  Can't wait to take them out and throw the s-waver

fishing user avatarRSA reply :

Any update Chris?

fishing user avatarChris Griffith reply :

I actually haven't fished the rod yet.  I planned to, then I sold one boat and bought another.  Put a little time changing out a few things on the new to me boat.  Had to deal with some legal stuff July/August.  And I've focused on hunting the last two weeks.  I'll try to bring it along next time I go out and see how it does.

Right now my favorite setup is a tatula elite 7' m/MH ags rod with my steez sv tw reel (Zpi pg spool and Zpi bearings). I've had a hard time putting this down to try some of the others I've accumulated the last few months.  I've been throwing light plastics with it, maybe 1/8oz weighted hook and it launches them.

Ive spent too much money and bought too much stuff and haven't even been able to get out much but I'm hoping to change that.

This is what I have that I haven't used yet:

Tatula elite 6'9" jerkbait with daiwa Sol (actually used the rod once but not the reel)

Zillion 7'2" MH/r with steez A and zpi spool

Irod Genesis 2 fms with Shimano curado 201e

OG Tatula 7'6" h/f with daiwa SV103 and zpi spool

Tatula elite 7'2" MH/R with TD Fuego and 100m spool and handle

Megabass jota slantbridge with daiwa TD Ito 103

This is what I have fished

Tatula elite 7' M-MH with steez sv tw and zpi spool

Dobyns fury 735 with Fuego 100hsl

Megabass levante jerkbait special (2019) with daiwa alphas sv 105

Tatula 7'1" m/f spinning with daiwa bg2500

So pretty much that shows that Ive spent more time buying stuff lately than actually fishing it and that I have way more stuff than I need.  I just kept finding something else I wanted until I had much more equipment than I meant to.  Plus, not gonna lie, it felt good buying myself some decent equipment and getting those packages in the mail during my divorce and not having to hear nagging and complaining.  Plus Everytime I get something one of my boys thinks they need to own it so this way I have something left for me lol.  I think I'm finally done though...maybe.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

So, I was on the fence re: a swimbait rod for mainly 6" Huds, maybe some slightly heavier baits. Was almost set on the Dobyn's 795, then being that I had a 806 years ago, I switched to that in case I wanted to toss heavier baits, then this morning I went back to the 795. Then I saw this thread and read Irod reviews on TW about the 783 sb, and decided I'm going to give the Irod a shot. I'll report back once I catch some nice fish on it.

@Hammer 4 So are you picking up the 7'8" jr swimbait rod? Curious about the taper of this rod for 1 to 2.5oz treble hook baits. Looking for a soft rod for this application. Look forward to hearing what you think of it

If you can wait a week or so, I'll post a report here. Having owned swimbait rods in the past, I'm curious to see how the Irod stacks up..

Yep, got my Irod for 127.00...:happy-111:   So, I received the 783sb rod today, I'm amazed at how light it is, and it looks Great. Just from bend test, the action looks good. Hope to get out this coming week to give a workout.
