Hey everyone im new to the forums and i just wanted to ask for your opinion on what i should get with the $150 set-up im planning to get. I want a rod and reel thats pretty much universal, by that i mean i want something that i can use for spinning, casting, jigging, worms, etc. because i cannot afford many rods and reels. I have been using a 6' $30 ulgy stick with a spinning reel for a while now and i use that for everything. Basically i want to try out a new mid end set-up thats not to pricey around 150 range. Also i would like to know if the rod is good for shore fishing because i don't own a boat either. My main bait i use is plastic worms and sinkos so i would like the rod and reel to accomodate that as well, but i am really interested in crank baits and other swims type baits thats why i want it to be kinda universal. Thanks for reading this post and if you guys can give me links or any advise on reels and rods i would greatly appriciate it thanks again!
i know i dont post alot but this is somthing i think i can help on
a few years back i was asking the same thing but i was wanting a bait caster i went with the bps exstrem rod and reel and love it i just bought 2 more last week plus they make a spinning reel but i'v not tryed it yet
hope this helped
If it's a spinning set-up you want then I'd take a look at the Pflueger President/BPS Extreme combo from Bass Pro. I bought this combo a few years ago as my first big purchase for bass fishing and have not had any complaints. It was the President spinning reel that turned me toward Pflueger and now I own 2 Patriarchs and a Supreme. It's a great reel that will last and with it's price it's unbeatable. The Extreme rod is also a great rod to start out with. Still fish this combo regularly.

The BPS Pro Qualifier combo would be my second pick

If it's baitcasting you want I would say either The Pro Qualifier combo
http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_102398_100003001_100000000_100003000_100-3-1
or the Extreme combo....

But right now the Pro Qualifier is on sale making them the same price
As for specs I would say either a 6'6''M or 7'M or MH
Don't feel as if you could go wrong with any of them.
BPS Extreme reel, and St croix MoJo. puts you at $150
Have heard great things about the mojo and extreme reels, you can get the rod at *** and it has free shipping!
The 6'6" Medium would be good for cranks and a good all around rod.
Good luck

those are some really nice stuff im just wondering should i get spinning reel or a casting one if im going to use it for both spinning and finesse fishing, plastic worm etc..
well if you plan on fishing more finesse then spinning, but most other applications work better on baitcasting IMO. You get better accuracy and I hate when the line gets tangled on spinning reels it is absolutely terrible. But baitcasting can be used in more variety, like flipping and pitching where as it is a little harder with a spinning outfit (Although it can be done). So i would lean more towards baitcasting, cause you can still cast pretty light things with a baitcaster ie I think a weightless senko is easiest for me to cast. Thats just me though also i can cast a 1/8th bullet weight with a tube pretty far on a casting outfit.
Depends on what you think will suit you best.
well the thing is i cant really say what suits me best because i never used a baitcasting reel before so i wouldn't know and im used to reels spinning with my left hand do that have those for baitcasting reels because most i've seen you have to use your right hand to spin i think..
I fish with the left hand retrieve, i was brought up on spinning reels until last year when i started using casting, I never thought I would like it, but i have come to like it a lot better than spinning.
ya same here i've been brought up using my left hand to retrieve too, but the thing is i've always wanted to try a baitcasting reel, but never went and got one i guess im going to have to try it.. another question is it hard to maintain the reel?? and can i spool the line myself at home or do i have to go into a shop because i've seen people with baitcasting reels go into the shop and have their line spooled there..
If you have a dick's sporting goods near you they have the all star, revo s combo on sale for only 130! Which is a great deal. If you don't I'd go with what was said a mojo for the rod. *** doesn't have any in stock but blackwatersportscenter.com has them in stock and free shipping over 75.
And you can easily spool it at home, have someone hold the spool of line with a pencil through the middle and just wind away, keep tension on so it fills better. And as for your first baitcasting outfit, theres a little learning curve.
Pflueger President Spinning/Extreme 6'6"M
or
Pflueger President/St Croix Mojo 6'8"MXF Spinning
Either of these will give you a high performance combo!

can't go wrong with the President....I would stick to spinnig if you have never used baitcasting.
thanks guys im leaning towards these 3 combos
the bps proqualifier
and
the mojo+extreme
or
maybe the president w/ the mojo
im leaning towards the bps and mojo extreme more because i really want to try baitcasting, but out of these 3 which would you guys go with or which would you say is more well rounded to use for most applications in fishing..
The Pro Qualifier does not come in a left hand retrieve. Right hand only.
Later,

This is on sale for $60
No Doubt about it- GET A BPS EXTREME BAITCAST COMBO, medium heavy rod, fast action, 7 ft., with a handle style to fit your liking. Best setup for the money in my opinion.
Quotereally, on the most requested questions someone put that this model was left handed "PQX10HLA" anyone know if thats a left hand retrieve thanks
WOW, they decided to make it in left hand retrieve. I was told it was only going to be a right hand retrieve model.
Sorry for the wrong info. and in that case the Pro Qualifier combo would be the way to go.
Later,
if you are interested i'll really hook you up with a good deal. since you are new here and want to learn i'll make you this offer. I've got a 6'6" st. croix avid medium power/fast action with a curado 100d on it that i'll sell you for $150 plus the shipping. both rod and reel are basically brand new. i never use them becuase i have so many others i like more. I don't know how much shipping will be to cali - i live in nc but probably something like $25. Let me know if you are interested.
You should take that!!! I just got an avid 7MH for $180, thats practically a steal! This is what makes this forum so good people are out to help.
josh how used is that set-up?? a year or so or what?? i like that deal but i just dont want to get ripped off by it breaking in a week or so.. but i dont know im gonna go on a spring break vacation in about 2 weeks so i might have to wait after that to buy my set up
i've only used it twice. it really is pretty much brand new. i'm not in any hurry to sell it - especially for that price but i'll help you out. it's not going anywhere - if you want to wait until after spring break that's fine.
Another thing to note reddragon is that the Rod has lifetime warranty, and the reel is backed up by shimano very well. Many people on here love their shimanos because they last very long and stay in working shape.

I would go with the Garcia Revo baitcaster. That is one of the best reels on the market for the money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do not buy a cheap baitcaster as they will make you hate baitcasting reels. But that Revo for $130 is a sweet deal, that way you still have your spinning rod for casting the lite stuff. I use my baitcaster for all my larger plugs , sninnerbaits, buzzbaits, and pitching jigs and stuff and I use my spinning outfit for all my soft plastics and smaller plugs.
haha now i really dont know what to buy, aftering reading what you all had to say and a little research lol it's pretty hard to come down to one rod for fishing every style because there basically isn't a rod or little rods that can do it.. im stuck now haha.. :-?
Ok well I have pretty much done the reaserch for you...I have been looking at quality rods for about 3 months and settled on the Avid, and for the reel, man I swear If i get the money I will buy one of them. Yeah you can get the revo, but its a $100 reel with a $30 rod :-/, and IMO the rod should be the better component. So if you dont take that deal I will talk to him and see lol jk. But Ik for you're first purchase you want to buy something at a store (I just did the same...turned down a few good deals just to get it from a store). But ill tell you it's a good deal as long as the reel is working and the rod blank is fine, you will get one heck of a deal. If you dont feel comfortable just do the Mojo and Extreme, not best of the best, but I am sure you wil be happy with them.

im leaning towards you set up josh, but is your reel left hand retrieve by any chance?? other than that bro if you can wait until after spring break or so i will probably buy it unless i take another deal elsewhere, also how long is the handle from the reel to the end 1-5inches or more??
thanks everyone for all the help im really looking foward to purchasing a set-up now after spring break or maybe even before then, depends if i have the income or not, but thanks on all the advice and everything
