Hey BR,
This Christmas one of the items on my shopping list is a new finesse combo, this past September my Shakesphere 7'0 of many years finally snapped via a hookset. (fish swam under a laydown before setting the hook) I am now on the market for a new finesse rod and reel, (anti reverse broke on the reel two weeks ago)
Any of you guys have any recommendations for an all around finesse rod and reel, I mainly fished traditional lighter lures like NEDs and smaller jigs/hardbaits.
Look forward to the replies!
Gotta ask - what's your budget. You can get finesse rigs from $40 for a combo (my Avocet is my finesse rig and cost me $39.99) all the way up to...sky's the limit.

Up to 120$
7 foot or close, Med Light power, fast action. You don't want to go too powerful or it won't load well when casting. Try to get the recommended lure weight range of the rod to include your most likely lure weights
Above good for Neds and similar, including drop shot, but for tubes I find a medium power much better for better hook sets and proper loading for 1/4 to 1/2 oz tubes. Better to have specific rods for each.

Given my personal brand preferences and that budget.
Reel:
Mitchell 308 $50
or
Pflueger President-30 $60
Rod:
Diawa Aird-X ML/F rod (AIRX701MLFS) $55
Puts you at $105-$115 plus tax.
That rig will handle Ned, Lighter drop-shots, inline spinners and such.
As @MickDsaid, however, for heavier lures you'll want a M/F for proper loading on casts and power for hooksets. Remember that jig weights don't include hook, skirt or trailer - so a 1/4oz swim jig will end up weighing close to 1/2 when all is said and done.
Huge Daiwa fan, owner of two Aird-X. Not a fan. There is no sensitivity to that rod, in my opinion.
Berkley Lightning Rod Shock 7' Medium Moderate Fast is rated 1/8oz-1/2oz. $49.99 on tw. I can say this stick is a good one and if you plan to throw lighter cranks and jerks and stick to one rod, they might be a great option.
Dobyn's Colt 6'9" Medium and 7' Medium are both rated fast and are rated from 1/8-1/2oz. $79.99 on tw. Never seen one of these, but have heard good things. Your mileage may vary.
I personally throw a 13 F-A-T-E C-H-R-O-M-E 6'10" MLF and a 7'1" MF, and rate them highly. They're 80 dollar sticks and pretty sensitive. My 6'10" has landed some nice 3 pounders with 6# fluoro. Capable rods. The 7'1" casts so well with a stick worm.
As for a budget reel I would recommend, Pflueger holds a special place in my heart and the Trion and President are good offerings. I've caught a lot of fish on the Trion. My first and only President was lost when a boat waked my kayak.
If I had to get a good spinning setup in your price range, I would grab a 13 F-A-T-E C-H-R-O-M-E 7'1" Medium Fast and a Pflueger President 3000. That's a bit over, so if you must drop to 120 grab a Pflueger Trion 3000.

Anything ML or lighter, rated for the lowest weight possible and without fast action.

Interesting setup. To be honest I only plan on really throwing NEDs. Wacky rigs and occasionally smaller hard baits like micro chatterbaits and micro jerkbaits. Would this combo be able to handle all that?
Shimano Sensilite 7’ L and daiwa Legalis LT 1000. Should be good for finesse bass lures and panfish as well.

Every combo listed in this thread can throw Ned, Wacky, and small movers.
A Ned rig weighs in at about 3/16oz with a 1/20oz jig head. A 5" senko is 3/8oz. Find a rod that you like the feel and balance of that falls within those Lure rating and you should be good to go.
I use a 6'8 M-XF rod rated for 1/8-1/2oz and does everything I need it to do well. Some companies that's a medium light others a medium.
KK has a decent line of rods and reels that will fit into your budget. They also have some combos at a decent price.
Also look at the Dobyns Colt and Fury Series.

Another guy I know mentioned KK. Sucks they don't have them listed on TW. I really like some of their baitcaster models.

KK only sells direct, Amazon and Ebay
The fact you are breaking tackleI wouldn't suggest lower price point/quality rods or reels.
Are you using braid? Do you set the drag? Breaking a finesse rod on a hook is very unusual.
My first suggestion is contact Dobyns "Store" Gary usually has a few Fury FR702 or 703 availble for a good discount.
2nd suggestion is shop the Black Friday sales with 20% discount.

That finesse combo was a rare time occurrence, I have never broken any tackle unless it was really cheap. Last thing I ever broke fishing wise was an old zebco when I was 11. Both finesse components were bought in walmart by the way.

Probably shop wear. People pick up rods and do all sorts of bending test, sometimes dropping the rod then put it back in rack...you never know it's history before buying off the shelf.
The reason I asked about braid is it affects the power of the rods you choose, usually go light power then with mono or FC line.

Very interesting article on rod failures. May answer why your rod broke

I see you've gotten a lot of good responses already but I'm gonna weigh in regardless. I personally use and swear by a ML but I recommend a M if you want to stay a little more versatile. A Fast action is also a must as someone already said.
For the reel, I strongly suggest a Pflueger President size 30. The president size 30 are a lot like other brands size 20 or 25. It's currently $60 at TW. I use it for all my finesse fishing and i think it can compare to reels that are double the price. 75% of my fishing is finesse fishing and I've been using this rod for 2 seasons straight, twice a week or more. Its extremely durable and the drag has never slipped on me yet.
For the rod, I like the Fenwick Eagle 6'6 ML. You can even go up to the 7' ML. They go for $60. The reasom I suggest the ML is because the lure rating is 1/8 oz to 5/8 oz, which is a pretty big range for a ML rod. I used the rod briefly and i remember anything over 1/2 oz felt a little weird to cast, but still! Most of Fenwick's M are pretty stiff and their lure ratings are 1/4oz to 3/4 oz. Still possible to throw a ned rig on that but that ML would allow for a lot more whip in the rod when casting lighter rigs.
That puts you at $120 before tax which is a little above you can always wait till black friday? Anyways, do whats best for your budget and tight lines buddy!

I would buy the president but I already have the baitcaster for my texas rig and jig setup, Definitely gonna check out the rods though! thanks for the feedback man!

What would be a good size for these spinning reels? 2500 or 3000?

How would weightless senkos work on the Aird?

I think it'd handle it. I do my weightless senkos and wacky rigs on my Avocet - the only difference is the Aird is rated to 1/2oz max where the Avocet is rated to 5/8oz...I don't think that 1/8oz gap would kill the Aird for those techniques.
Check sportsmans outfitters. They have the Daiwa Fuego LT 3000 for $74.95 and Tatula XT Medium spinning rod for $69.99. Nice set up for the money and should meet your requirements. I have the same set up. Very happy with it.

The Sahara FI is already out. The FE is the last generation reel.

That is they are discounted, still a good reel for someone on a budget.

Better going with the FI much better reel for a fraction more.

Agree, lots of discounts available on the FI.
