I have recently been told to look on eBay for the 2 new reels I want but can I really trust the sellers? Does anybody have any experience with this? I'm going to buy the reels brand new if i can.

Check the sellers feedback. If it is good and he has lots of it, buy with confidence. I've bought a bunch of reels from ebay, new and used, US and Japan and have never had a problem.

I've bought two used off ebay. Something wrong with both. One, a BPS Johnny Morris reel had a worn out cast control. I got it for $50 and had to pay BPS $20 more to fix it. It works like a charm now for $70 vs $129 or so when it was new. The other, an older ABU Garcia Lower end reel needed the levelwind pawl replaced. I did so with one form an older round reel. It seems that some people will buy them and wear them out and selll on there to subsidize new ones. Or they could be trade-ins from tackle shops.

Buyer beware. At least if you buy new you know you can return to the mfg if it isn't satisfactory.

What reels are you looking for? Most new reels can be bought online for the same price as Ebay.

I've bought a bunch of new reels on ebay from good sellers and never had a problem. No way would I ever buy a used reel on ebay though.

I just bought my third brand new reel on ebay. I checked the feedback of the sellers to make sure they had a good track record and didn't have any problems. The 3 reels I've purchased there have been excellent deals that I couldn't find anywhere else.

I have also bought 2 reels from eBay before. A Curado I and a Lew's Tournament Pro. No problems with them at all.

I've bough new and used reels from the U.S.

and Japan. Never any issues. Asing as they have good feedback there's no need to worry.

I've bought one reel off of Ebay. The seller had 100% perfect feedback, but the one I got still had issues with it. If you find a fantastic deal go for but usually you can find better off elsewhere.

I have bought and sold many reels on eBay and everybody was happy. I think it helps if you buy a used reel that was a great reel when it was new. If you buy a used reel on eBay that was a lesser quality reel when it was new then IMHO, you kinda deserve the crappy reel that you are going to get. I don't care if it's an Antares HG that has a low Buy It Now price, if it looks like it was abused, do not buy it. IMHO, buy a reel that looks like it was cared for from the Big 2 and you more than likely will be ok.

It's always a risk when you buy things sight unseen. I got my one and only brand new Daiwa Certate off Ebay but it had some problems that I had to take to the reel specialist to fix. It wasn't catastrophic but it did take up some time and a little bit of money to solve. By all means utilize Ebay to search for reels but also take advantage of other sources like craigslist, offerup, forums, japanese vendors (especially with exchange rate being so favorable but the warranty though you would have to send it back to Japan), etc...

Make sure you are giving yourself a little safety margin when purchasing unseen to reflect the risk. I've bought stuff from everywhere and learned that with that risk margin even when things don't go completely my way on Ebay (crappy line lay on Certate, loose tip guide on a GLX, etc...) I'm still ok with it because after all the hassle I still consider it a good deal.

Ive bought half my reels on ebay and always found great deals and never had any problems...like said above, check ratings and you should be ok..

I agree, never had a problem with a new reel.

I would not buy an off warranty used reel sight unseen. I would buy a used reel in person, good chance I wouldn't offer any thing close to the asking price.

I believe buying new brand name reels from a seller with steller customer ratings is a good venture. Buying used reels from any one is a risky venture due to worn bearings, clutch transfer bars and weak springs etc. that are not visible.

I've bought several used reels on ebay. Admittedly, I've been lucky, as I've never gotten badly burned.

I bought an ABU 5500C3 from a seller with zero feedback, there were no pictures in the auction and the only description was "5500c3, silver and black."

I put in a lowball bid, figuring there weren't gonna be very many other bidders and won the auction for $15. The reel I received was in perfect condition, I was hard pressed to tell if it had ever been used.

I haven't always been so lucky, a few reels have been very dirty and some needed minor repairs, but all have easily worth worth what I paid.

Buying a used reel on ebay is always going to have an element of risk but there's a chance of reward too.

Feedback and communication is key. As a seller of several reels I try my best to make sure the buyer clearly knows what they are getting and when they will get it. Review the feedback and get comfortable there first ... second ask questions ... If they take the time to answer them your confidence in them will grow before you place your bid. With that said there are some people who are great salesmen so I lean more towards the feedback as my 1st line of defense.

One last note I just recalled ... some eBay sites are backed by a business. If that is the case you can even call them to talk about the product. They usually share their information on their posts.

I buy and sell on Ebay frequently and have been for many years. It's fairly easy to determine who you should deal with and who you shouldn't. I will buy from those who have many transactions and high ratings, for me that's 99 to 100%. I look for grammar, condition of item, look at their feedback. There are buyers who are unreasonable so if there is negative feedback for someone who has an item that you want you can read it to see what happened and if it was warranted or makes sense against all of their positive feedback. You can usually tell if it's some yahoo that just wants to be difficult. Most of the time it will be someone with few transactions that does this type of thing from what I've seen. Most people that sell on Ebay are concerned about having a good reputation so they can continue to do business on there. I wouldn't hesitate to buy on Ebay but you have to use common sense, good judgement, and do a little research. In the end, you have to have a little faith as well but I would wager that 99% of folks are going to treat you right on Ebay. That's been my experience anyway.

The worst thing that can happen is that you don´t get anything and even then you won´t loose anything if you pay with PayPal.

I have had great success buying off Ebay when it comes to reels; got a Daiwa PX-Type R for a great price, and a KVD spinning reel.

Take a good look at the photo's, ask questions, check feedback and make sure that you work through Ebay/PayPal to purchase the reel to protect yourself.

Bought dozens of reels on EBay with just one purchase being bad. I've gotten many used reels and I always expect to have to do some maintenance. I make sure the price I pay has that factor built in. That being said. Most of the used stuff is better than I planned on. I have 2 Z's and a Fuego that are part of my regular rotation that were great deals. I have bought several older Daiwas just to clean up and maybe trick out a little and resell and have consistently made money. You just have to get the reel at the right price

Just picked up a Tournament MB and had no issues despite the seller only have 1 positive feedback. I think if you pay with Paypal you can feel safe that if the item is not as described you can get your money back.

I have bought at least 30 reels from ebay, with 25 being used. I have bought around 10k in tackle and rods as well, mostly used stuff. I have never lost a penny from a bad transaction..if you buy a used reel, it arrives with a defect, you simply communicate with the seller and if that doesn't work, you open a dispute. Ebay will get your money back for you 100% of the time. I have opened countless disputes regarding broken or defective stuff, and I have always received my money back. When using ebay to make a big ticket purchase like a nice reel, use a sniper and be patient..you might not get what you want at your price the first time, but eventually you will if you are within reason.

Like anyone else I like a nice deal but only for NIB. I no longer have the patience nor desire to bid, I've done it many times before. I have an adequate amount of gear, there is nothing I need or want that bad, if the buy it now price is to my liking that's the button I click.

I've bought both new and used reels on eBay and have had no problems. I've bought only from sellers with 99% good ratings. That, IMHO, is key. There are so many ways to get a good rating on eBay that anyone who has less than that is suspect.

Also, with used reels, look the photos over very carefully. You can usually tell whether a reel has been abused by a close-up photo.

The only thing I would look out for on ebay is the guys that buy reels to flip them. Most times these reels have little to no test time on the water and can have some issues most being minor. It still comes down to the seller, and their history.

I'm lucky to live in an area with an amazing local shop (Hook UP) and try to support my local shops when I can. They do so much volume they occasionally have sales which puts products like reels at price points very similar to what can be found on ebay.

That being said a lot of the time its hard to not buy form ebay. Saving 30-40 dollars on average is a ton of extra fishing gear you can buy.

Buying on ebay is no different than buying from a store. AFAIC you have the same chance of buying a 'lemon' from either. Just look at the feedback. If they have a lot and its positive you're g2g. Paypal has excellent buyer protection as well.
