In The Market For New Reel 2024

fishing user avatarMccallister25 reply :

Gonna keep is short and to the point; I'm looking for a new casting reel for spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. Budget is 150. What's the best for the price point?

fishing user avatarOzark_Basser reply :

Curado I in 6.3:1

The Curado I 6.3:1 is best if you want to use both on the same setup, but a 7 ratio is better for buzzbaits.

Really enjoying the ergo on the new Curado I. Very comfortable which is a big point of the reels I get. Just played with the CI4 yesterday. Oh my god....

fishing user avatarMccallister25 reply :

Thinking about the Revo SX. Any experience?

fishing user avatarmasterbass reply :

In that price range, I'd get a curado I and not look back.

fishing user avatarnew2BC4bass reply :

Never handled a Curado I.  Might be the bee's knee for all I know.  I like my Tatula Type R.  Really enjoying the Pinnacle Primmus for about $7 more.  My like new Lews TP was less than your limit.  Its another nice reel.  Quite a few good reels in that price range.  Handle some and pick your poison.

fishing user avatarUCPOPO reply :

I'd go with a Lew's BB1.

fishing user avatarMccallister25 reply :

Well, I kinda really want an Abu. Never owned one, but I have buddies that do.

I was looking at the Revo SX. I'm sure somebody has personal experience with it. Share?

fishing user avatarDTack reply :

Curado I or the Tatula/Tatula Type R.  Both reels are awesome, try to handle the Tatula beforehand to make sure you're comfortable with it as the shape and cast control knob are bothersome for some folks.  The tatula is a "wider" shape, where the curado is a "longer", narrower shape.  In my opinion you can't go wrong with either, which is pretty cool.

I had an STX.... For me, the reel did a good job, I just couldn't make it comfortable to fish with.  The gearbox hung below my rod handle and the way I palm a reel, it just was not comfortable for me at all.  I began to question durability in the long term as well.  I think the Gen 2 revos were the best abu will ever make under a 300$ price point personally.

fishing user avatarfishballer06 reply :

Another vote here for the Curado I

Haven't handled a Gen 3, but own a Gen 1.  Very nice reel.  I read that the Gen 2 reels are the best among the 3 generations with its dual braking system.  Mine is an excellent casting reel.  Some of my longest casts have been made with it.

OP  I'd handle a Gen 3 to see if it's ergonomics suit you before buying.  Personally from all I've read, I would go with a Gen 2.

fishing user avatarillinifan4152 reply :

Curado I or Chronarch 200e

fishing user avatarcatch anything reply :

I would look around because you can find the STX for less than 150 brand new and at the price its a pretty good reel

fishing user avataroffsidewing reply :

While not the brand recognition some may seek, the Lew's Speed Spool Tournament is a pretty decent value.  You can catch them on sale for under $120.  I have one on a Cabelas Tourny ZX for Crankbaits.  My other baitcasters are various Metaniums on various St Croix's and I still enjoy cranking with that Lew's.

However, the Curado I is a good value as well and sometimes goes on sale for around $140.  I've never tried a Daiwa, but lots of people recommend them.

I love both the Curado and the Tatula. I found that the 6.3:1 Tatula seems to pick up line fairly quickly and would be a great reel if you want a do it all reel. The Curado should treat you well also. Not sure about the STX Revo as I've not owned one. The Revo S reels I had were great. BTW, I haven't paid more that $99 yet for the standard Tatula if that helps you at all ;) Check the bay...

I had a generation 2 sx and it was a great reel, but it was a righty and I prefer lefties so I sold it.

fishing user avatarSteveo-1969 reply :

Sounds like you've already (kind of) decided on a Revo SX.  I've had a Revo S for a couple years and it's a great reel, never fished the SX but I'm sure it's great as well.  My newest reel is a Curado I and I love it.  Mark down my vote for the Curado!

fishing user avatarWPCfishing reply :

Great reel, Great deal.. I bought two, one 6:4:1 and a 7:1:1

I use my Revo SX on my 6'9" spinnerbait rod and I have nothing but good things to say about it. This reel balances the rod perfectly and casts like a dream. I got my reel off Amazon for some where between $130 to $140 brand new so I would check there if thats what you go with.

Hope this helps!

Cabelas has 100 sized Quantum Smokes in 7:1 on clearance for $99 right now......holds about 140 yds of 12lb test

I'd get a Lew's bb1 pro. You can find them new for 150.

I owned the gen 2 sx, and I own the gen 3 stx. I also own the curado I. I like the curado I the best. It is built like a tank, and it casts further than both revos.

In my opinion, in that price range, Abu Garcia is just not up to par with shimano as far as quality goes. The revos are always nice and super smooth at first, but they tend to go downhill a lot quicker than any shimano I've ever had.

Lews Tournament Pro. $139.00 at American Legacy Fishing right now.. I bought 2, awesome reels. I have 6 Lews reels in total.

When you sign up they give you a $25.00 discount code. You can't use it for the Lews TP reel. It's already marked down bare bone so use it for something else when the time comes.

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

The Chronarch 200e would get my vote if you can find one on sale.

fishing user avatarBassinLou reply :

To the OP, considering the applications you would like to use the reel for I would consider: Shimano's Curado I HG, CH 200E7 or Lews: TP1 SH. I fished the 3G Revo STX for 2 seasons, but ultimately I didn't like it. Ergonomics suited me, handled ok, castability was ok, but it was the geary sound that really turned me off. Petty? Maybe. But its my opinion. I recommended the higher speed ratio's because if you are going to use a buzzbait, the higher ratio will help keep those blades on top of the water with less winding. And,  if you need a slower presentation, just slow down. Best of luck on your choice.

X2 on the Pinnacle Primmus, it's a sweet little reel that doesn't get much attention. Can be found online for about $150-$160 NIB. The Lews Tournament Pro is hard to beat and can be found on the bay for about $150, and the new Lew's Tournament MB which is very close in performance to the TP can be found for about $110.
