baitcaster problem 2024

fishing user avatarMMan16 reply :

I just recently bought my first baitcaster and have gotten the hang of it pretty well. But I seem to have a problem when I have a decent size fish on. My handle turns with no problem but the spool doesn't retrieve line.I'm not sure if my knot is slipping or what.  I'm using 10lb Vanish flourocarbon any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Drag is not set high enough.

fishing user avatarinfamous512 reply :

Check your drag setting, it might be too loose.

fishing user avatarMMan16 reply :

That was the first thing I checked. I had it all the way up and it would still slip. I appreciate the responses though. Any other thoughts.

fishing user avatarbigtimfish reply :

You have your drag tightened all the way down, and it still slips? What kind of reel is it?

fishing user avatarBantam1 reply :

Are you using braided line? If so the line can be slipping on the spool if it was not properly backed.

fishing user avatarIncheon Basser reply :

Also to if it's a cheap reel and you have been hard on it you might have striped the drag which means you'll have to buy a new one...or replace the main gear and drag washers

fishing user avatar.RM. reply :

Yeah what reel is it??

The line is slipping on the spool....

Easy to find out, hold the extreme edge of the spool so it cannot turn and pull the line, if it slips it needs backed.

You can also remove the spool with the line on it hold the spool shaft and pull the tag end, if it slips then it needs backed.

The drag spring washers have been compressed (from cranking the pads tight) or pads have oil on them......

Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!

fishing user avatarMMan16 reply :

My reel is a shimano curado bantum. It hasn't been over used I bought it in late spring and probably use it on average maybe 2 times a week since then. I'm not using braid I have flurocarbon on 10lb. It just started happening after I respooled it that's why I think it might have to do with the line.

So this started after respooling, seems like your line might be slipping so respool & check your knot.

fishing user avatarMMan16 reply :

Thanks for the help. Going to respool and see what happens. Any more suggestions if this doesn't solve the problem?

fishing user avatarrubba bubba reply :

Whatever you do, don't respool with the Vanish as your breakoff problem will drive you far more nuts.

If it still slips after respooling, send it to Reelmech or post further in the Shimano forum.

The key is to look closely and determine if the line is slipping or if the spool is slipping.  Get your eyeballs next to the baitcaster and confirm, or do what Reelmech suggested about taking the spool out and then pulling to see what slips.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Vanish...what happens when you hook a fish using it, LOL.

He said what he was using in the post.  :;)

I actually have a dumb question....is this a left hand retrieve reel?

If it is a new E series Curado send it off to Shimano®. If it is one of the older Curado's send it to me and I'll make it better for sure.......

fishing user avatarMMan16 reply :

It is a shimano curado bantam 200bsf. Right hand retrieve.

fishing user avatarcoryjames reply :

thats your issue right there.you should have bought the lefty ;)

fishing user avatarcentral_fl_fishin reply :

If you use backing or not (although I think it helps), when spooling make sure your knot is tight and apply ample pressure to make sure the line is tight on the spool.  Sounds like you got line/spool slippage.

fishing user avatarcoryjames reply :

i never do much of a knot with fluro or mono.never had a issue.i think it his drag.did you get it wet or anything?

fishing user avatarcentral_fl_fishin reply :

Simple diagnosis...

If the line pulls off the spool and the spool stays put, then try re-spooling with backing/spooling tighter.

If the spool moves with the pull at full drag, then get your drag fixed.

The reason I ask is that I have had more than a couple of people not realize that a lefty baitcaster has reverse threads.  They were actually running their drags loose, when they thought they had them tightened, LOL.

Sounds to me there is an issue here.  This is one of two reels on this board with slipping spools, and I cannot believe they are both from mono or fluoro type lines slipping.

fishing user avatarMMan16 reply :

If it turns out to be the reel and not line slippage what would I be looking at? Is it one thing or could it be a few diff things?

fishing user avatarrubba bubba reply :

It would most likely be something with the drag discs, etc...  If it's still under warranty, have them send you another one.  If it's not, send it to Reelmech and he'll make it better than new.

fishing user avatarMMan16 reply :

Ok thanks. I'm bringing it to the dealer I got it from tomorrow to see if he can pinpoint it for me. I think it should be under warranty its only a few months old and I believe it has a one year warranty.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

It could also be an issue with the AR bearing, though generally that has a studdering slippage that is intermittent at first, before totally failing.

fishing user avatarMMan16 reply :

It seems weird to me though that these parts could be shot. The reel is new and not over used. Are they just defective parts or could it have been something I've done?

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

If its new, then its covered under warranty. Contact Shimano.

fishing user avatarMMan16 reply :

I'm going to just to see what they have to say about it.I hope its a quick turn around I've never had to send a reel back to the manufacturer.
